BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is often associated with significant stigma from nurses. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between the types of knowledge mobilized by nurses and their reflective practice in caring for individuals with BPD experiencing a suicidal crisis. METHODS: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted among 34 nurses working in community mental health centers and psychiatric emergency units on Réunion Island. Three types of knowledge were assessed (biomedical, psychopathological, and practical knowledge grounded

The Impact of Patient-Centered, Structured Interdisciplinary Bedside Rounds on Medical Staff Satisfaction, Education, and Experience.

Background Daily interdisciplinary rounds in hospitals are becoming standardized to maximize the multidisciplinary approach to hospitalized patient care. We hypothesize that structured Interdisciplinary Bedside Rounds (IDRs) increase the satisfaction, education, and experience of medical staff and thus detail actionable recommendations for IDR implementation or delineate measurable long-term impacts. Methods This observational study was performed in a 300-bed community hospital. Participants included internal medicine physicians, nurses, case managers, social workers, physical therapists, clin

Identifying and overcoming barriers to providing sexuality information in the clinical setting.

While the scope of the clinician-patient relationship in rehabilitation includes the opportunity to provide information on sexuality, all too often this does not occur. This article identifies barriers to providing information on sexuality and makes suggestions for overcoming them. At a preconference workshop, "Sexuality After Spinal Cord Injury: Understanding the Effects of Knowledge and Attitude on Dissemination Practices," held during the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses 22nd Annual Educational Conference, participants explored barriers to providing sexuality information to their patien

The Role of the School Nurse in the Special Education Process: Part I: Student Identification and Evaluation.

Every U.S. student is entitled to a free and appropriate education. School districts must identify and evaluate any child who they find is unable to engage fully in learning as a participant in the general education curriculum. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 requires that these students be assessed by qualified individuals in any areas that may be impacting learning, including health, vision, hearing, social and emotional status, communicative status, and motor abilities. The school nurse, as the health expert, has an important role to play as a member of the special e

Assessing health needs in people with severe learning disabilities: a qualitative approach.

The nursing assessment, and the contribution it makes to the identification of an individual's health needs, is often a complex and multidimensional process. This is always true when the individual concerned has a severe learning disability. The nurse should develop the assessment in partnership with individuals who may experience major communication difficulties, or have unappreciated levels of perceptual or cognitive dysfunction. They may also live with the ongoing possibility that their affective or behavioural responses may be misinterpreted as 'challenging behaviour'. This case study focu

Attitudes towards Communication in Nursing Students and Nurses: Are Social Skills and Emotional Intelligence Important?

The communication attitude (ACO) of nurses can significantly influence patient health outcomes. This work aims to evaluate predictor variables of communication attitude (emotional intelligence and social skills) in nurses and nursing students separately by comparing linear and non-linear methodologies. Two samples participated in this study: 312 nursing professionals and 1369 nursing students. In total, 75.60% of the professionals and 83.80% of the students were women. After signing the informed consent form, their emotional intelligence (TMMS-24), social skills (IHS) and ACO (ACO) were assess

Home health utilization association with discharge to community for people with dementia.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to identify home health utilization factors associated with successful discharge to community after home health care for patients with and without Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 100% national Medicare home health data files (2016 to 2017). Multilevel logistic regression was used to study the relationship of home health utilization with a modified definition of successful discharge to community (M-SDC) after home health (no readmission or discharge within 30 days). Significant interactio

Collaboration and Communication in Care at the Nursing Home: The Next of Kin's Experiences of Participation Following Educational Intervention for Staff.

Background: After an older person moves into a nursing home, the next of kin often continues to participate in the care provided there. This participation in care may contribute valuable knowledge of the preferences and wishes of the older person, thereby helping nursing staff deliver personalised care. Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore how next of kin experience their participation in the care of older persons residing in nursing homes after educating nursing staff about participation in palliative care. Methods: This follow-up study used a qualitative design based on semi-stru

Community-based mealtime management for adolescents with anorexia nervosa: A qualitative study of clinicians' perspectives and experiences.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Community-based mealtime management is an intensive, focused, and time-limited intervention for young people with an eating disorder which aims to support refeeding at home and thus prevent hospital admission. Little is known about clinicians' experiences of delivering this intervention. We aimed to explore mental health clinicians' perspectives on community mealtime management with children and adolescents diagnosed with an eating disorder. METHODS: A qualitative design was used. Semistructured interviews were conducted with six mental health clinicians with experie

Improving children's dental health.

Surveys show that tooth decay in young children is becoming concentrated in more deprived sectors of the population. Only by targeting families with young children in underprivileged areas will dental health be improved further. An analysis of dental health promotion advice has shown that simple, direct advice to "brush teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste" is just as effective as complicated health promoting activities. Questions about the development of the teeth and oral structures are common among new parents but they rarely turn to the dental team for answers. Nurses, health visitor

A modified grounded theory study of how psychiatric nurses work with suicidal people.

BACKGROUND: People with mental health problems continue to present a disproportionately high risk of suicide. Despite the relevance of suicide to psychiatric/mental health (P/MH) nurses, there is a documented paucity of research in this substantive area undertaken by or referring specifically to P/MH nurses; there is currently no extant theory to guide P/MH nursing care of the suicidal person. OBJECTIVES: Accordingly, this paper reports on a study undertaken to determine if P/MH nurses provide meaningful caring response to suicidal people, and if so how. DESIGN: The study used a modified gro

Student nurses' experience of interaction with culturally diverse psychiatric patients.

A study of Baccalaureate nursing students was conducted to explore and describe undergraduate nursing students' experience of interaction with culturally diverse psychiatric patients. Thirty-seven nursing students participated in this research project. Sixteen of the students came from a predominantly black university and the other twenty-one students came from a predominantly white university. Both universities are situated in the same city and allocate their nursing students to the same psychiatric hospital for practical experience. The student nurses reported having experienced both positiv

Integrating web-based and objective structured clinical examination training programs for nurses on ultrasound hip screening during neonatal and infant home visits: a case study.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound hip screening is crucial for the early detection of developmental dysplasia (DDH), but little is known about standardized training approaches for nurses. This study aimed to evaluate an educational program combining web-based learning and objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) training to improve nurses' knowledge and skills in ultrasound hip screening and DDH prevention during universal neonatal and infant home visits. METHODS: The program targeted two objectives: (1) to enable nurses to understand the Graf method and acquire standard plane ultrasound images,

Mental Health Nursing Simulation to Develop the Therapeutic Use of Self.

BACKGROUND: Although simulation is well established for procedural and acute care skills, mental health nursing simulation focused on the therapeutic use of self remains underrepresented in the literature. This article describes the design, implementation, and educational contribution of three theory-informed mental health nursing simulations developed to support competency-based psychiatric nursing education. METHOD: Guided by Peplau's interpersonal relations theory, three simulations were developed addressing motivational interviewing for alcohol use disorder, trauma-informed care for intim
