The present study assessed the growth problems in an indigenous African population of Nigerian urban public school children. The study population consisted of 1390 Nigerian children (predominantly Igbo), 718 boys and 672 girls, ages 4-10 years. Compared to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) reference population, the Nigerian children had an excess prevalence of both short stature and underweight. The prevalence and features of malnutrition in COPD patients have been studied extensively in stable conditions but are poorly defined in the presence of acute respiratory failure (ARF). Nutritional status was prospectively assessed, on hospital admission, in 50 consecutive COPD patients presenting with ARF, 27 of them requiring mechanical ventilation (MV). Three national anthropometric surveys carried out in Colombia in 1965-1966, 1977-1980, and 1986-1989 provide a reasonably standardized basis for comparing the nutritional status of infants and young children in those years. That comparison, presented here together with appropriate socioeconomic data, indicates marked reduction of malnutrition paralleling strong socioeconomic gains.

A cross-sectional study on 64 institutionalized and 65 noninstitutionalized elderly women has been undertaken. The age range was 60 through 90 years. Vitamin C status was assessed by serum ascorbic acid measurement and the nutritional status was evaluated by a three-day dietary record and main anthropometric measurements. Mean concentration of ascorbic acid was 1.03 mg/dl in the noninstitutionalized and 0.67 mg/dl in the institutionalized group (p less than 0.001). This study was performed to determine the role of nutritional status as a determinants of 5 fluorouracil (5-FU) toxicity in a tumor bearing mice. After subcutaneous inoculation, of mammary tumor (81 B) mice were assigned randomly to two nutritional regimens, (1) 8% casein: D-mice, (2) 27% casein: N-mice. Mortality was increased significantly in D-mice (100%) compared with N-mice (0%) by administration of 5-FU (20 mg/kg). Nutritional status and in vivo immune responses were investigated in 30 patients with alcoholic liver disease who were drinking heavily up until emergency hospital admission. Two groups of pregnant women belonging to a low socioeconomic group, one with oral lesions and the other without lesions, were studied in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy for vitamin B6 nutritional status. Both the groups showed evidence of abnormal tryptophan metabolism, and in pregnant women with clinical signs the postload xanthurenic acid excretion in urine was higher than in the other group, suggesting a severe deficiency of vitamin B6. In carcinoma of the esophagus, two major factors are operative, both of which are capable of suppressing the immune response, namely starvation and the presence of a malignant tumor. This paper explores the effects of maternal nutritional status and food supplementation ingested by the infant on the duration of postpartum amenorrhea. A significant negative association was found between the nutritional status of the mother during the third trimester of pregnancy and the length of postpartum amenorrhea. A negative association was also found between infant supplementation and duration of postpartum amenorrhea. Each of these associations remained significant after controlling for the other, suggesting that both factors independently affect the length of postpartum amenorrhea.

A prospective study of children with measles has shown a significant association between malnutrition and a poor prognosis. Levels of a number of complement components bore no relationship to the severity of the disease or to its prognosis. Some of the children with acute measles had depressed serum concentrations of factor D, Clq or C3, but complement deficiency does not appear to be implicated in the heightened susceptibility to secondary bacterial and viral infection so commonly found after acute measles.
