A patient operated for toxic megacolon secondary to ulcerative colitis developed a Wernicke syndrome (thiamine deficiency) during the postoperative period despite the administration of the usually recommended doses of vitamin B1 during total parenteral nutrition (TPN) treatment. Vitamin B1 deficiency should be checked in order to evaluate the patients' nutritional condition before starting TPN, especially those suffering from severe chronic malnutrition. Neurogenic bladder was observed in chronic spinalized animals. Since these animals are difficult to maintain for long periods, there are few reports of systemic study of these preparations. The retrovirus-associated adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) has not been previously documented in Taiwan. Five cases identified recently by the authors are reported. Three of the patients were women, and their ages ranged from 36 to 60 years. The most important diagnostic clue was the observation of polylobated lymphoid cells in the peripheral blood. A review of 83 patients with penetrating neck wounds was performed to assess the relative merits of operation versus observation. Fifty patients (60 percent) underwent immediate surgery, 28 of whom (56 percent) had no significant neck injury. There were no deaths and only two complications (4 percent). Neuronal intracytoplasmic inclusions were found in the ventrolateral and posterior nuclei of the thalamus of 3-month-old thiamine-deficient mice and quaking mice. An electron-microscopic study revealed that these inclusions were composed of condensation of parallel rectilinear 10-nm filaments with interconnecting cross-bridges as a hallmark of neurofilaments. Nodules or cysts of the oral mucosa occurred with an incidence of 88.7 per cent in 541 Japanese newborn infants. No infant was over 8 days old. This incidence is higher than that reported in Caucasian and Negro newborns. Liver biopsy specimens of two patients with Reye syndrome were examined for ultrastructural features, viral isolation, and urea-cycle enzyme activity.
