Developing a Preliminary Definition and Domains of Flare in Knee and Hip Osteoarthritis (OA): Consensus Building of the Flare-in-OA OMERACT Group.

Flare in knee and hip osteoarthritis (OA) is more than just an exacerbation of pain. Unstructured, semistructured, and focus group interviews followed by Delphi surveys with patients and health professionals (HP) generated candidate domains of an OA flare. Content analysis of interviews with 29 patients and 16 HP extracted 180 statements, which were grouped into 9 clusters. Delphi consensus with 50 patients (Australia, Canada, and France) and 116 HP (17 countries on 4 continents) identified 5 flare domains: pain, swelling, stiffness, psychological aspects, and effect of symptoms. Elements for

Associations of sleep quality with incident atrial fibrillation: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The strong relationship between sleep apnoea and atrial fibrillation (AF) is well known. However, it remains unclear whether the sleep quality is related with AF. AIM: To evaluate the associations of sleep duration, insomnia and frequent awakening with AF. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane databases from inception through September 2017 to identify studies that evaluate the risk of AF in adults with short sleep duration, long sleep duration, insomnia and/or frequent awakening. Effect estimates from the individual study were extracted and comb

Vitamin C intake in relation to bone mineral density and risk of hip fracture and osteoporosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

We aimed to systematically review available data on the association between vitamin C intake and bone mineral density (BMD), as well as risk of fractures and osteoporosis, and to summarise this information through a meta-analysis. Previous studies on vitamin C intake in relation to BMD and risk of fracture and osteoporosis were selected through searching PubMed, Scopus, ISI Web of Science and Google Scholar databases before February 2017, using MeSH and text words. To pool data, either a fixed-effects model or a random-effects model was used, and for assessing heterogeneity, Cochran's Q and I

The association of placenta previa and assisted reproductive techniques: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Several epidemiological studies have determined that assisted reproductive techniques (ART) can increase the risk of placenta previa. To date, only a meta-analysis has been performed for assessing the relationship between placenta previa and ART. This meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the association between placenta previa and ART in singleton and twin pregnancies. METHODS: A literature search was performed in major databases PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus from the earliest possible year to April 2017. The heterogeneity across studies was explored by Q-test and I2 stati

Antipsychotic drug exposure and risk of venous thromboembolism: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a serious disorder that may be complicated by pulmonary embolism (PE). Case reports and observational studies published in the early 1950s suggested that antipsychotic (AP) drugs may represent a risk factor, while observational studies conducted in the last 3 decades have provided conflicting results. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to investigate whether AP drugs increase the risk of VTE and PE, and to ascertain the risk associated with first- and second-generation AP drugs and with exposure to individual drugs. DATA SOURCE: Relevant studies were located b

Addressing the influence of unmeasured confounding in observational studies with time-to-event outcomes: a semiparametric sensitivity analysis approach.

In this paper, we develop a semiparametric sensitivity analysis approach designed to address unmeasured confounding in observational studies with time-to-event outcomes. We target estimation of the marginal distributions of potential outcomes under competing exposures using influence function-based techniques. We derive the non-parametric influence function for uncensored data and map the uncensored data influence function to the observed data influence function. Our methodology is motivated by and applied to an observational study evaluating the effectiveness of radical prostatectomy (RP) ver

Evaluating the VOCORDER device for early disease detection through breath analysis: study protocol for a two-phase clinical study.

INTRODUCTION: The survival rate of patients with life-threatening diseases primarily depends on the speed of diagnosis. Too often, diseases are detected only after symptoms appear, which usually occurs at later stages of a disease when available treatments may be less effective. Current detection techniques primarily depend on identifying metabolites in biofluids such as blood and urine. The analysis of these fluids is typically performed in laboratories, resulting in lengthy waiting times for patients to receive their results. In severe cases, invasive biopsies and radiative methods are used
