Emergency drug kits: pharmacological and technical considerations.

The risk for complications while providing dental procedures is greatest when caring for patients having significant medical compromise. It is comforting that significant adverse events can generally be prevented by careful preoperative assessment, along with attentive intraoperative monitoring and support. Nevertheless, the office team must be prepared to manage untoward events should they arise. This continuing education article will address basic emergency drugs that should be available in all dental practices and additional agents that become essential for those practices providing various

Field notes from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control 2019 pilot internship program for resident doctors.

The 10-week internship for the pilot cohort of resident doctors from various teaching hospitals in Nigeria was a very rewarding experience. The internship was a beautiful immersion into field epidemiology, rumor surveillance, risk communication, digital tools for surveillance, developing strategic documents, line lists interpretation, weekly presentations and outbreak response coordination alongside working briefly as an incident manager for the Yellow Fever technical working group. Some of the learning points included: meeting coordination, contributions to ongoing research, review of trainin

Three skills every 21st-century manager needs.

Over the past decade companies have become more global and employee groups more diverse than ever before. Organizations are less hierarchical and more collaborative. And today's offices are full of once unimaginable technological distractions. We asked experts in cross-cultural communication, information networks, and the science of attention what skills executives should cultivate to tackle these new challenges. Molinsky thinks that managers must overcome psychological barriers in order to act in ways that other cultures find appropriate. Davenport and Iyer explain why the devolution of hiera

How to distinguish between 'business as usual' and 'significant business disruptions' and plan accordingly.

This paper seeks to provide an insight into Air New Zealand and how business continuity is managed in an industry with inherent disruptions. The differences between 'business as usual' and 'significant business disruptions' are outlined along with their associated criteria, response and escalation processes. The paper describes why the company incorporates the four 'R's of the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act within its BCM framework and how this aids resilience. A case study is provided that details a 'significant disruption' that occurred in November 2006. This event resulted in the to

Emergency drugs.

There is universal agreement that dentists require emergency drugs to be readily available. Opinions differ as to the specific drugs that should comprise an emergency kit. This article has provided one opinion. Oxygen, epinephrine, nitroglycerin, injectable diphenhydramine or chlorpheniramine, albuterol, and aspirin should be readily available in a dental office. Other drugs such as glucagon, atropine, ephedrine, hydrocortisone, morphine or nitrous oxide, naloxone, midazolam or lorazepam, and flumazenil should also be considered. There are differences in the level of training of dentists in th

Non-odontogenic toothache.

Toothache is a common complaint in the dental office. Most toothaches have their origin in the pulpal tissues of periodontal structures. These odontogenic pains are managed well and predictably by dental therapies. Non-odontogenic toothaches are often difficult to identify and can challenge the diagnostic ability of the clinician. The most important step toward proper management of toothache is to be suspicious that the pain may not be of dental origin. The cardinal warning symptoms of non-odontogenic toothache are as follow: A. Spontaneous multiple toothaches. B. Inadequate local dental cause

Two case reports of bacterial prostatitis with a proposed treatment for aviators.

Bacterial prostatitis is the inflammation of the prostate gland secondary to a bacterial infection, characteristically having a chronic course with sporadic acute exacerbations. While considered to be the most common cause of recurrent bacterial urinary tract infections in the middle-aged adult male, bacterial prostatitis can be difficult to manage satisfactorily, particularly from the aeromedical perspective. The recurrent infection pattern, common for chronic bacterial prostatitis, has recently been better defined with the localization of the bacterial reservoir as being within the lumen of

Blood pressure control and cardiovascular risk profile in hypertensive patients under specialist care in Argentina: Results from the CHARTER study.

Worldwide, hypertension control rate is far from ideal. Some studies suggest that patients treated by specialists have a greater chance to achieve control. The authors aimed to determine the BP control rate among treated hypertensive patients under specialist care in Argentina, to characterize patients regarding their cardiovascular risk profile and antihypertensive drug use, and to assess the variables independently associated with adequate BP control. The authors included adult hypertensive patients under stable treatment, managed in 10 specialist centers across Argentina. Office BP was meas

Blood pressure management in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Hypertension aggravates macrovascular and microvascular diseases and mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The current Japanese Society of Hypertension Guidelines of the Management of Hypertension (JSH 2014) recommends that antihypertensive medication should be initiated concomitantly with lifestyle modification when blood pressure (BP) is ⩾130/80 mm Hg and that target levels of office and home BP should be <130/80 mm Hg and <125/75 mm Hg, respectively, in T2DM patients. Considering more favorable metabolic profiles and renoprotective effects than other classes of antihyp
