Elastosis of the lamina cribrosa in pseudoexfoliation syndrome with glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: Pseudoexfoliation syndrome is characterized by the presence of glycoprotein fibers in ocular and extraocular tissues, and often is associated with glaucoma. Pseudoexfoliation material may be associated closely with elastic microfibrillar-associated glycoprotein as well as elastin. METHODS: Four optic nerve heads of two patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome and glaucoma were examined using electron microscopy and immunogold detection of elastin. Optic nerve heads from healthy age-matched individuals and patients with primary open-angle glaucoma were used for comparisons. RESULT

[Retinal nerve fiber layer photography in retinal vein occlusion].

In six eyes we found typical signs that could serve as criteria for the differentiation of ischemic from non-ischemic retinal branch vein occlusion. Perimetry showed a mean defect (in the affected area) of more than 10 dB in eyes with defects in the retinal nerve fiber layer in contrast with 5 dB on one eye without nerve fiber defects. Secondly, fluorescein angiography showed ischemic areas in all eyes examined with localized defects in the photographs of the retinal nerve fiber layer. Damage of the retinal nerve fiber layer was observed before capillary obliteration could be detected by fluor

Self‑Powered All‑Fiber Hydrogen Sensor via Whispering Gallery Mode Microcavity and Built‑in Electric Field Synergy.

Fiber‑optic hydrogen sensors offer intrinsic safety and remote operation, yet their application is constrained by expensive spectrometers and complex demodulation. Here, we present a self-powered all‑fiber hydrogen sensor (SAHS) that integrates optical excitation, electrical readout and gas detection on a single fiber tip, enabling remote and room‑temperature sensing at zero bias. By constructing a whispering gallery mode (WGM)-enhanced lateral ZnO/PEDOT:PSS n-p heterojunction on the fiber tip, we achieve synergy between the localized optical field and the built‑in electric field. The WGM micr

Diffusion tensor imaging of the optic nerve in multiple sclerosis: association with retinal damage and visual disability.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There is a well-known relationship between MS and damage to the optic nerve, but advanced, quantitative MR imaging methods have not been applied to large cohorts. Our objective was to determine whether a short imaging protocol (< 10 minutes), implemented with standard hardware, could detect abnormal water diffusion in the optic nerves of patients with MS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined water diffusion in human optic nerves via DTI in the largest MS cohort reported to date (104 individuals, including 38 optic nerves previously affected by optic neuritis). We also as

Reduced retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and macular volume in pediatric multiple sclerosis.

Retinal atrophy is well known in adult-onset multiple sclerosis but remains unexplored in children. We aimed to determine retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and macular volume in pediatric patients, with and without optic neuritis and their relations with visual evoked potentials. We also examined macular volume changes at month 12. Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness of all quadrants and macular volume were measured in 28 relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis eyes and 30 control eyes using optical coherence tomography and were found reduced in patients compared with controls. This reduction

Hydrogel multimode fibers: enabling imaging and intelligent recognition of breast tumors.

Early-stage breast cancer lesions are often hidden within mammary ducts only a few hundred micrometers in diameter, where conventional silica-based fiber endoscopes suffer from severe mechanical mismatch with ultrasoft tissue. Hydrogel multimode optical fibers (HMMFs) offer excellent mechanical compliance and biocompatibility but are typically hindered by high optical loss and poor long-term stability due to dehydration. Here, we present a novel biocompatible HMMF for imaging and intelligent recognition of breast tumors. Micron-scale polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel fibers are continuously fabric…

Detection of low levels of trichloroethylene vapor with Raman spectrometry.

The response of a novel fiber-optic Raman probe to low levels of trichloroethylene (TCE) vapors is characterized. The detection limit of the current probe for TCE vapor is 34 mg/L, and the probe exhibits a fully reversible response. The probe uses an organic-polymer, low-density polyethylene to concentrate TCE vapors in the optical path of the fiber-optic Raman spectrometer. The relative standard deviation for measurement of 677 mg/L of TCE in the vapor is 0.3%.

Transmission and scanning electron microscopy of cutis rhomboidalis.

Cutis rhomboidalis nuchae was assessed in a 65-year-old patient. Optical microscopy showed basophilic agglomerations in the reticular dermis with decreased elastic fibers. Transmission electron microscopy showed elongated, curved and fragmented structures, and in their interior the presence of electron-dense lumps was reduced and irregular, similar to modified elastic fibers, whereas the collagen fibers had a normal aspect. Scanning electron microscopy showed deposits between the bundles of collagen, resembling pebbles or stones. These findings demonstrate that, at one stage of the disease, th

High spatial resolution imaging mass spectrometry of human optic nerve lipids and proteins.

The human optic nerve carries signals from the retina to the visual cortex of the brain. Each optic nerve is comprised of approximately one million nerve fibers that are organized into bundles of 800-1200 fibers surrounded by connective tissue and supportive glial cells. Damage to the optic nerve contributes to a number of blinding diseases including: glaucoma, neuromyelitis optica, optic neuritis, and neurofibromatosis; however, the molecular mechanisms of optic nerve damage and death are incompletely understood. Herein we present high spatial resolution MALDI imaging mass spectrometry (IMS)

[Biomechanical properties of the cribriform lamina in glaucoma-induced atrophy of the optic nerve and after decompression operations on the scleral canal].

The authors made a mathematical and clinical analysis of the cribriform lamina (CL) of the optic nerve and nerve fiber bundles passing through its foramens in glaucoma-induced optic neuropathy. It was shown that in elevated intraocular pressure, there was a significant CL deformity leading to the compression and deformity of nerve fibers. The important biomechanical characteristic of CL deformity is the tangent of the angle between the longitudinal axis of the scleral canal and the perpendicular to the CL surface. An increase in the inner radius of the scleral canal of the optic nerve due to i

Reference-frequency generation by Raman-enhanced four-photon mixing.

Reference-frequency generation for optical fiber instrumentation is now restricted to the frequency bands in which the reference materials have well-resolved absorption lines. We study analytically and experimentally the possibility of generating reference wavelengths by use of Raman-enhanced four-photon mixing in an optical fiber. We show that it is possible to generate efficiently frequencies that are 10-40 nm away from the absorption bands of the usual reference materials: acetylene (12C2H2), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and similar or derived species. As a demonstration we use an acetylene cell

Disaggregated DAS interrogation for branched fiber networks.

Distributed acousto-optic sensing (DAS) enables continuous, high-resolution acoustic monitoring over kilometer-scale distances using standard optical fibers. However, this sensing technique faces limits concerning loss, such as those inherent to passive optical networks (PON). The optical synchronization of remote DAS interrogators with centralized narrow-linewidth light sources that have been off-loaded from the field-distributed sensing units enables to probe the fiber plant of PONs from the branch-side of their power-splitting signal distribution elements. Towards that, acousto-optic acquis…

Optic disc and optic nerve of the blind cape mole-rat (Georychus capensis): a proposed model for naturally occurring reactive gliosis.

Recent studies of the visual system of animal species that live in a subterranean environment show not only regressive but also progressive morphological features. In this regard the aim of the present investigation is to describe the structural organisation of the eye and optic nerve of the adult Cape mole-rat, with special emphasis on both glial cell population and myelination. The main results are: (a) astrocytes show identical features to those occurring in reactive gliosis; (b) optic fibers vary greatly in diameter; (c) very small axons are myelinated and are often surrounded by a thicker

Efficient mode coupling between a few-mode fiber and multi-mode photonic chip with low crosstalk.

The mode-division multiplexing technology has been developing slowly in the field of fiber-chip-fiber optical interconnects, mainly limited by the inefficient mode coupling between few-mode fiber and multi-mode photonic chip. Here we propose and design a multi-mode coupler composed of tapered few-mode fiber and silicon integrated multistage waveguide tapers, which allows the direct coupling between high-order fiber modes and high-order waveguide modes with high coupling efficiency and low crosstalk. Based on the edge coupling scheme, the six linear polarization modes (LP01x/y, LP11a x/y, LP11b

High sensitivity tapered fiber refractive index biosensor using hollow gold nanoparticles.

A localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensor based on tapered optical fiber (TOF) using hollow gold nanoparticles (HAuNPs) for measuring the refractive index (RI) is presented. This optical fiber sensor is a good candidate for a label-free RI biosensor. In practical biosensors, bioreceptors are immobilized on nanoparticles (NPs) that only absorb specific biomolecules. The binding of these biomolecules to the receptors changes the local RI around the sensor and this change is detected by the transmittance spectrum of the fiber. Fast, accurate, easy and low-cost disease diagnosis are the
