Marked attenuation of mitral regurgitation by stent implantation: a patient with unstable angina.

A 69-year-old woman was admitted because of increase of chest pain and dyspnea. Systolic murmur of Levine III/VI was heard. Electrocardiography showed ST depression caused by ischemia. Echocardiography revealed severe mitral regurgitation (MR) and inferoposterior hypokinetic wall motion. Left ventriculography revealed the presence of MR (II/IV). Coronary angiography showed severe organic stenosis of the right coronary artery. Based on these findings, the diagnosis was severe papillary muscle dysfunction caused by unstable angina. The lesion of the right coronary artery was successfully stented

The effects of hydrodynamic shear stress on fertilization and early development of the purple sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus.

Life in the highly turbulent surf zone poses a severe challenge to reproduction in free-spawning animals. Not only can breaking waves quickly dilute the gametes shed by spawning organisms, but turbulence-induced shear stresses may limit fertilization and interfere with normal development. A Couette cell was used to re-create some of the effects of turbulent water motion to study effects of environmentally relevant shear stresses on fertilization in the purple sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus). Although low shear stresses improved fertilization success (presumably by increasing mixing)

Peripherally located type I vestibular hair cells are required for several motor behaviors and stimulus-evoked brainstem neural responses in adult mice.

The mammalian vestibular system has two types of sensory receptors (hair cells), type I and type II. Understanding the roles of type I and II hair cells in the vestibular system's control of motor behaviors is difficult because most primary vestibular neurons receive inputs from both hair cell types. To test if type I hair cells are required for motor behaviors, we ablated them from peripheral zones of vestibular epithelia in young adult (3-6 months) Fbxo2CreERT2::Rosa26DTA (experimental) mice of both sexes, then examined motor behaviors and brainstem neuronal responses. Over 90% of peripheral

Variability of Maximum Glottal Angle on Clinical Sniff Task Differs in Patients With Functional and Organic Laryngeal Pathologies Compared to Healthy Controls.

OBJECTIVES: Practitioners rely heavily on flexible endoscopic visualization of the true vocal folds during a repeated "sniff-ee" maneuver to assess vocal fold mobility. However, the human eye lacks the temporal and spatial precision required to accurately gauge fine differences in maximal glottal angle. This study compared differences in maximal glottal angle variables during "sniff-ee" maneuvers across patients with various voice and laryngeal breathing disorders. METHODS: We retrospectively measured glottal angle from flexible laryngoscopy examinations in six groups of patients with voice a

4D robust evaluation for the intensity-modulated-proton-radiotherapy plans for patients with ventricular tachycardia based on cardiopulmonary motion characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Clinical trials and case reports have demonstrated that radiotherapy effectively reduces the frequency of ventricular tachycardia (VT) events. Given the sensitive anatomy of the treatment target, it is important to minimize the normal tissue dose while optimizing the target dose. This retrospective study investigated the optimal treatment planning strategy utilizing proton beams for VT patients to mitigate the effect of both cardiac and respiratory motion. METHODS: Twelve patients with respiratory-related 4DCT data and six patients with cardiac 4DCT data were enrolled in this stud

Quantitative evaluation of respiratory motion-induced blurring in expiratory-phase CBCT for pancreatic SBRT.

BACKGROUND: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is widely used in image-guided radiotherapy because it reflects the patient's anatomy immediately before treatment. However, CBCT images of the abdominal organs, including the pancreas, are often degraded by respiratory motion. PURPOSE: To address this limitation, this study quantitatively evaluated expiratory-phase CBCT (EP-CBCT), an acquisition method designed to reduce respiratory motion-induced blurring during stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for pancreatic cancer. METHODS: This retrospective analysis included 10 patients with pancrea

Diagnostic Accuracy of Zero-Echo Time MRI for the Evaluation of Cervical Neural Foraminal Stenosis.

STUDY DESIGN: A cohort study. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical utility of Zero-Echo-Time (ZTE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the assessment of cervical neural foraminal stenosis (CNFS) through the comparison of inter-modality [computed tomography (CT) and ZTE-MRI] CNFS grade severity agreements. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Conventional MRI limited in its ability to provide direct visualization of cortical bone. The highly organized tissue structure of cortical bone results in very short T2 values that preclude acquisition of sufficient signal intensity and

Effects of traditional versus embodied cognition-based training on physical fitness and lower-limb kinematics.

This study aimed to compare the effects of traditional instruction and embodied cognition-based training on physical fitness factors and lower-limb joint kinematic patterns during the execution of a standardized aerobic movement sequence. In this randomized two-group pretest-posttest trial, 63 volunteer female university students aged 18-25 years were randomly assigned to either a traditional training group (n = 31) or an embodied cognition-based training group (n = 32). Two participants from the embodied cognition-based group were unable to attend the post-test assessment and were excluded fr

Finite element analysis for better evaluation of rib fractures: A pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Modeling rib fracture stability is challenging. Computer-generated finite element analysis (FEA) is an option for assessment of chest wall stability (CWS). The objective is to explore FEA as a means to assess CWS, hypothesizing it is a reliable approach to better understand rib fracture pathophysiology. METHODS: Thoracic anatomy was generated from standardized skeletal models with internal/external organs, soft tissue and muscles using Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine data. Material properties were assigned to bone, cartilage, skin and viscera. Simulation was perfo

Preparation and In Vitro Evaluation of Ibuprofen Spherical Agglomerates.

Important transformations of the pectoral girdle are related to the appearance of flight capabilities in the Dinosauria. Previous studies on this topic focused mainly on paravians yet recent data suggests flight evolved in dinosaurs several times, including at least once among non-avialan paravians. Thus, to fully explore the evolution of flight-related avian shoulder girdle characteristics, it is necessary to compare morphology more broadly. Here, we present information from pennaraptoran specimens preserving pectoral girdle elements, including all purportedly volant taxa, and extensively com

Design, fabrication, and in vitro testing of novel three-dimensionally printed tympanic membrane grafts.

The tympanic membrane (TM) is an exquisite structure that captures and transmits sound from the environment to the ossicular chain of the middle ear. The creation of TM grafts by multi-material three-dimensional (3D) printing may overcome limitations of current graft materials, e.g. temporalis muscle fascia, used for surgical reconstruction of the TM. TM graft scaffolds with either 8 or 16 circumferential and radial filament arrangements were fabricated by 3D printing of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), flex-polyactic acid (PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL) materials followed by uniform infilling wi

Transesophageal echocardiographic evaluation of the morphologic and hemodynamic cardiac changes during ventricular fibrillation.

To analyze cardiac motion during ventricular fibrillation (VF), we used transesophageal echocardiography to study nine male subjects, aged 44 +/- 7 years, affected by heart disease who have poor left ventricular function, during implantation of an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator, when VF is induced several times to determine the defibrillation threshold. Wall and valvular motion, transmitral and transaortic blood flow, and blood echoreflectivity were evaluated in all patients. Moreover, in basal conditions, during VF, 1 and 5 minutes after restoration of basal rhythm, we calculated the

Is trunk motion influenced by breast volume? The effect on joint moments at the hip, knee and ankle.

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between breast size and factors impacting running biomechanics is poorly understood. This study examined the effect of breast volume on trunk motion and subsequent, lower limb joint moments. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. METHODS: Thirty female recreational runners (volume range: 91-1030 mL per breast) completed a 4-minute treadmill running protocol on an instrumented treadmill at a velocity of 10 km·h-1 whilst kinematic and kinetic data were collected. Breast volume (mL) of each participant was quantified from a three-dimensional surface scan of their breasts. RESULT

Temporal Registration in In-Utero Volumetric MRI Time Series.

We present a robust method to correct for motion and deformations in in-utero volumetric MRI time series. Spatio-temporal analysis of dynamic MRI requires robust alignment across time in the presence of substantial and unpredictable motion. We make a Markov assumption on the nature of deformations to take advantage of the temporal structure in the image data. Forward message passing in the corresponding hidden Markov model (HMM) yields an estimation algorithm that only has to account for relatively small motion between consecutive frames. We demonstrate the utility of the temporal model by sho

A method for evaluation of proton plan robustness towards inter-fractional motion applied to pelvic lymph node irradiation.

BACKGROUND: The benefit of proton therapy may be jeopardized by dose deterioration caused by water equivalent path length (WEPL) variations. In this study we introduced a method to evaluate robustness of proton therapy with respect to inter-fractional motion and applied it to irradiation of the pelvic lymph nodes (LNs) from different beam angles. Patient- versus population-specific patterns in dose deterioration were explored. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patient data sets consisting of a planning computed tomography (pCT) as well as multiple repeat CT (rCT) scans for three patients were used, with
