BACKGROUND: Raine syndrome (RS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by biallelic loss-of-function mutations of FAM20C. The most common clinical features are microcephaly, exophthalmos, hypoplastic nose and severe midface hypoplasia, leading to choanal atresia. The radiological findings include generalized osteosclerosis and brain calcifications. RS is usually lethal during the neonatal period due to severe respiratory distress. However, there exists a non-lethal RS form, the phenotype of which is extremely heterogeneous. There is paucity of data about clinical course and life expecta…

Osteoscleroses are a heterogeneous group of bone remodeling disorders characterized by an increase in bone density. Here we report on a cons … showed values 200% to 300% above values for age. A cervical MRI revealed the presence of a diffuse osteosclerosis with calcification of the posterior vertebral ligament and a narrow canal between C2 and T2. Blood test results were unremarkable. Serum osteocalcin levels were in the normal range, whereas high values of serum C-telopeptide were noted. A bone biops …

Erdheim-Chester (EC) disease belongs to the group of lipoid granulomatosis. Symmetric sclerosis of the meta- and diaphysis of long tubular bones are pathognomonic radiologic changes. Additionally, other skeletal segments can be affected. Extraskeletal manifestations can occur in almost all organs; lungs, pericardium, retroperitoneum, skin, and orbita play particularly important roles. The last case of 38 cases of Erdheim-Chester disease with an extraordinary mediastinal and perirenal involvement is described. For the second time following the initial description by Chester, an axial skeletal p

Distinctive clinical, radiologic and pathologic features are seen in Paget's disease of bone. These distinct features can be divided into three phases; initial phase, midphase, and late phase. The clinical features may vary from patients being asymptomatic (involving a single bone) to patients having severe, multiple bone involvement with systemic disease. Radiologically, there are unique features which can differentiate Paget's disease from other bone diseases. The radiologic features follows the histologic findings on light microscopy. The correlation of the different phases with the clinica

The records of 190 adults who presented over a 10-year period with previously untreated aural cholesteatomas were analyzed with respect to age, mode of presentation at the level of the tympanic membrane, and pneumatization of the mastoid. The findings were compared with those obtained in an earlier study of 109 children (aged 13 years and younger) seen over the same period of time. Two main types of cholesteatomas were found in both adults and children, most of them (82.3%) associated with sclerotic or diploic mastoids (i.e., poorly pneumatized mastoids) and the rest (17.3%) with pneumatized m

Carbonic anhydrase (CA) isoenzyme II deficiency--formerly called the syndrome of osteopetrosis with renal tubular acidosis and cerebral calc … ic findings are unusual, however, in that cerebral calcification appears by early childhood and the osteosclerosis and skeletal modeling defects may gradually resolve by adulthood. Patients are usually not anemic. A hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis, sometimes with hypokalemia, is caused by renal tubular acidosis that may be a proximal, distal, or combined type. …

Quantitative computed tomography (QCT) was used to assess trabecular bone mineral concentration in the vertebrae of 132 children, 45 with suspected disorder of bone mineralisation, 54 with thalassaemia and 37 controls. The range for bone mineral concentration in controls, expressed as equivalent K2HPO4 concentrations, was 90-190 mg cm-3. Abnormally low values were seen in all untreated children with idiopathic juvenile osteoporosis, 3/9 steroid recipients, and three patients with osteogenesis imperfecta. Abnormally high values were seen in 10/14 chronic renal failure patients. Comparison of th

Results of this paper have shown via pathophysiological examples that rapid progress has been made in our pathophysiological concepts regarding the causal and formal genesis of osteopathy. Systematic organization of these concepts facilitates understanding and communication between the radiologist and the clinician. There is a marked contrast between this fact on the one hand and our lack of knowledge in the clear diagnostic description of osteopathies with the exception of hyperparathyroidism on the other. Important advances in current radiological research are represented by the radiological

The findings at bone marrow biopsies in 5,000 patients with systemic haematological diseases were compared with the radiographic appearances. Haemoblastic conditions produce diffuse involvement of the bone marrow, whereas conditions characterised by limited infiltration, such as Waldenström's disease or Brill-Symmers' disease, produce some osteoporosis and only rarely bone destruction. Haemoblastic diseases with additional focal proliferation, such as myelofibrosis or myelosclerosis, multiple myeloma, highly malignant lymphomas and malignant granulomatosis produce circumscribed changes in the

Sixty-eight patients with plasmacytic neoplasia and osteosclerotic lesions were analyzed. Men predominated in this series. Mean age was 55.3 years and 26 patients were younger than 51 years at diagnosis. Early onset of disease was statistically different from multiple myeloma in general. Thirty patients had peripheral polyneuropathy and often neurological manifestations preceded other symptoms. Skeletal pain was less common, whereas hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, and lymphadenopathy were more common than in myeloma in general. Incidence of azotemia, hypercalcemia, high ESR, and anemia was lower t

1 61-year-old man had osteosclerotic myeloma that was localized in the eleventh thoracic vertebral body and associated with sensorimotor polyneuropathy, skin hyperipigmentation, edema, hypertrichosis, gynecomastia, and white nails. Cases of osteosclerotic myeloma with and without polyneuropathy in the literature were reviewed with special reference to accompanying dermatologic and endocrinologic signs and synmptoms. We assume that the polyneuropathy, cutaneous hyperpigmentation, edema, hypertrichosis, gynecomastia, and white nails are causally related to each other and are a remote effect of o
