Prophylactic high-flow nasal oxygen vs. conventional oxygen for prevention of postoperative respiratory complications: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) are a major cause of morbidity after lung resection, particularly in older adults. Following extubation, noninvasive respiratory support strategies are increasingly used to prevent respiratory deterioration, but the role of prophylactic high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) in this setting remains uncertain. METHODS: In this single-center, open-label randomized controlled trial, patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lobectomy or segmentectomy for stage I-IIIa non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) were randomized to HFNC

AI-Driven and Automated Systems for Continuous Oxygen Saturation Monitoring in Long-Term Oxygen Therapy: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) improves outcomes in selected patients with severe chronic hypoxemia, but conventional LTOT uses fixed oxygen flow prescriptions that may not reflect changing needs during activity, sleep, or exacerbations. AI and automated oxygen systems may support continuous peripheral capillary oxygen saturation (SpO2) monitoring, signal-quality assessment, and adaptive oxygen titration. Evidence comparing AI-driven and non-AI automated approaches across performance, clinical readiness, LTOT applicability, and equity remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This systematic r

Augmenting blood oxygen saturation via the sleep environment: a crossover trial of non-invasive indoor oxygen diffusion.

INTRODUCTION: Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is the standard treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA); however, patient adherence is often low. This study investigated the efficacy of a novel, non-invasive environmental strategy, elevating indoor oxygen (O2) levels, as a complementary approach for individuals at potential risk of OSA. METHODS: A crossover trial with 20 participants was conducted, each undergoing two overnight polysomnography (PSG) tests: a sham control and an intervention night. During the intervention, the point-source oxygen diffusion system (80% purity, 8 L/

Crystallinity-Regulated Interplay Between Lattice Oxygen and Molecular Oxygen Enables Selective Superoxide Generation in Spinel Catalysts.

Catalytic oxidation mediated by lattice oxygen and molecular oxygen pathways represents an appealing route toward sustainable chemistry, yet achieving selective reaction outcomes by controlling reactive oxygen species (ROS) through catalyst structural design remains a fundamental challenge. In such systems, ROS can originate from both lattice oxygen and molecular oxygen, and their relative contributions determine ROS identity and reaction selectivity. Herein, NiMn2O4 spinel oxides with tunable crystallinity are employed to elucidate how structural ordering regulates lattice oxygen reactivity a

Early nitrogen wash-out for inside attendants during hyperbaric oxygen therapy: a novel oxygen distribution regimen.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is widely used as treatment of decompression sickness (DCS). The patient breathes oxygen at an elevated oxygen partial pressure of up to 280 kPa, whereas any inside attendant (IA) normally breathes air. This results in nitrogen uptake and tissue loading in the IA, which must be considered during decompression. The US Navy Treatment Table 6, and its equivalent used by the Swedish Armed Forces, prescribe periods of oxygen breathing prior to and during decompression to reduce the risk of DCS for the IA. However, since these oxygen periods are concent

Association of cardiac perfusion index with cerebral regional oxygen saturation and fractional tissue oxygen extraction in preterm infants.

OBJECTIVE: Preterm infants face elevated risk of cerebral oxygen dysregulation due to immature cerebrovascular autoregulation and systemic hemodynamic instability. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)-derived cerebral regional oxygen saturation (rSO₂) and fractional tissue oxygen extraction (FTOE) provide continuous, noninvasive surrogates of cerebral oxygen delivery and utilization balance. The cardiac perfusion index (PI), obtained simultaneously via pulse oximetry, reflects peripheral microvascular perfusion and may correlate with central hemodynamic status. This study aimed to characterize th

Apnoeic oxygenation with high-flow nasal oxygen in adult patients undergoing endoscopic pharyngolaryngeal surgery: a clinical review.

Endoscopic pharyngolaryngeal surgery requires access to the base of tongue, pharynx, larynx, trachea and/or upper oesophagus using a rigid or flexible endoscope for diagnostic or therapeutic surgical management of benign or malignant disease. The anaesthetist must deliver a safe and effective shared airway management strategy. This strategy is aimed at optimising the surgical view and access to pathology, whilst avoiding airway obstruction, maintaining oxygenation, facilitating carbon dioxide clearance, and minimising the risk of airway fire. Various strategies exist to achieve this depending

Oxygen transfer in the human cornea: Sensitivity and error-propagation analyses incorporating an oxygen-tension-dependent diffusion coefficient.

Eye diseases and prolonged contact-lens wear can decrease the corneal oxygen diffusion that is essential to metabolic reactions in the human eye. Measuring oxygen diffusion in the cornea is challenging because it is thin (∼500 μm) and its viability must be maintained. An innovative in vivo technique involves placing a contact lens on the corneal surface and its tear film. The inner surface of the contact lens is coated with a photosensitive dye that responds to the oxygen tension by phosphorescence quenching. Corneal properties such as the oxygen diffusion coefficient, maximum oxygen-consumpti

Synergistic Catalysts with Fe Single Atoms and Fe3C Clusters for Accelerated Oxygen Adsorption Kinetics in Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

The design of cost-effective and efficient catalysts based on transition metal-based electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial yet challenging for energy-conversion devices like metal-air batteries. In this work, we present a cost-effective strategy for preparing catalysts consisting of single-atomic Fe sites and Fe3C clusters encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon layers (FeSA-Fe3C/NC). The FeSA-Fe3C/NC electrocatalyst demonstrates outstanding ORR performance in alkaline electrolytes, achieving a high half-wave potential (E1/2 = 0.902 V), 4e- ORR selectivity, and robu

Artificial Oxygen Carriers: Lessons From Hemoglobin-Based Oxygen Carrier Clinical Trials and Current Development Efforts.

The clinical benefit of blood transfusion is undeniable, and yet reliance on donated blood products has several shortcomings. These include risks of supply shortages due to reliance on volunteer donors, short storage life, and potential infectious disease transmission. Immune response complications to donated blood cannot be completely avoided, despite significant advances in testing. Many of these limitations are exacerbated in low-income countries. For decades, cell-free hemoglobin-based blood substitutes have been developed and tested as potential substitutes for red blood cell transfusions

Hyperbaric Oxygenation Maintains Elevated Stromal Oxygen Availability During Corneal Collagen Crosslinking with and Without Epithelial Removal.

PURPOSE: Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) can halt corneal ectasia. Leaving corneal epithelium intact during treatment may reduce the incidence of complications. However, it is under debate whether this reduces efficacy and if oxygen supplementation may be necessary to optimize the cross-linking effect. This study aimed to investigate the impact of hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) on intracorneal oxygen concentrations during epi-off and epi-on CXL. METHODS: CXL was performed using riboflavin and ultraviolet-A (UV-A) irradiance (3 mW/cm2 for 30 min) on porcine corneas under normobaric and hype

The potential linkage between sediment oxygen demand and microbes and its contribution to the dissolved oxygen depletion in the Gan River.

The role of sediment oxygen demand (SOD) in causing dissolved oxygen (DO) depletion is widely acknowledged, with previous studies mainly focusing on chemical and biological SOD separately. However, the relationship between the putative functions of sediment microbes and SOD, and their impact on DO depletion in overlying water, remains unclear. In this study, DO depletion was observed in the downstream of the Gan River during the summer. Sediments were sampled from three downstream sites (YZ, Down1, and Down2) and one upstream site (CK) as a control. Aquatic physicochemical parameters and SOD l

Supraglottic jet oxygenation and ventilation improves oxygenation during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography: a randomized controlled clinical trial.

PURPOSE: Hypoxia is one of the most frequent adverse events under deep sedation in the semiprone position. We hypothesized that supraglottic jet oxygenation and ventilation (SJOV) via Wei nasal jet tube (WNJ) can reduce the incidence of hypoxia in patients under deep sedation during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). METHODS: A total of 171 patients were divided into three groups: N group, supplementary oxygen via a nasopharyngeal airway (4-6 L/min); W group, supplementary oxygen via WNJ (4-6 L/min); WS group, SJOV via WNJ. The primary outcome was the incidence of adverse

Optimizing Tissue Oxygenation in Reduction Mammoplasty: The Role of Continuous Diffusion of Oxygen: A Feasibility Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Bilateral reduction mammoplasty (BRM) aims to alleviate macromastia-related symptoms in women. This procedure involves a T-Junction suture at the medial inframammary fold that encompasses 12%-39% of wound breakdowns mainly due to reduced perfusion. Continuous diffusion of oxygen (CDO) may enhance breast tissue oxygenation to prevent such complication. We explored the feasibility of this therapy. METHODS: A 4-wk feasibility-pilot randomized controlled trial of women undergoing BRM was conducted. By internal randomization (left/right side), participants received standard of care (
