Invasive aspergillosis after pandemic (H1N1) 2009.

We report 2 patients with invasive aspergillosis after infection with pandemic (H1N1) 2009. Influenza viruses are known to cause immunologic defects and impair ciliary clearance. These defects, combined with high-dose corticosteroids prescribed during influenza-associated adult respiratory distress syndrome, may be novel risk factors predisposing otherwise immunocompetent patients to invasive aspergillosis.

Including the public in pandemic planning: a deliberative approach.

BACKGROUND: Against a background of pandemic threat posed by SARS and avian H5N1 influenza, this study used deliberative forums to elucidate informed community perspectives on aspects of pandemic planning. METHODS: Two deliberative forums were carried out with members of the South Australian community. The forums were supported by a qualitative study with adults and youths, systematic reviews of the literature and the involvement of an extended group of academic experts and policy makers. The forum discussions were recorded with simultaneous transcription and analysed thematically. RESULTS:

Pandemic influenza H1N1 2009--the Canadian experience.

The cornerstone of Canadian response to the pandemic H1N1 outbreak was the Canadian Pandemic Influenza Plan. The Plan was based on a moderate scenario, articulated around 7 pillars: surveillance, antiviral drugs, vaccines, public health measures, clinical care, communications, and research. This presentation provides an overview of Canada's response to pandemic H1N1. It presents the context (Who did what? How? …), what happened (focusing on pregnant women), addresses making decisions together, and includes some post-H1N1 reflections.

[H1N1 pandemic. Measures and experiences on the state level].

In order to establish a joint pandemic strategy, the German states ("Länder") together with the German federal government ("Bund") agreed on joint preparations for pandemic scenarios. This included the description of procedures, such as infection control measures, stockpiling of antiviral drugs, and contracts with vaccine manufacturers to ensure supply of vaccines in the event of a pandemic. The situation during the influenza H1N1 pandemic differed from that planned so that many short-term adjustments were required. It highlighted the need to make pandemic planning more flexible. In spite of s

Neurological complications of pandemic influenza (H1N1) in children.

The aim of this study was to determine the clinical characteristics of children demonstrating neurological complications with pandemic influenza (H1N1). We reviewed the medical and laboratory records of all children who were hospitalized with neurological symptoms and who had proven influenza virus infection by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction on nasal and throat swabs. Eight children aged between 10 months and 7 years had neurological complications due to pandemic influenza (H1N1) and five of them were female. Four of them were previously healthy; there was chronic renal failur

[Pandemic influenza caused by A(H1N1) in pregnant women].

Pandemic influenza caused byA H1N1 virus, that started in Mexico in 2009 and that persist though with mortality and morbidity much lower rates, did not have the repercussions of the other pandemias in the 20th Century, this is because the members of the World Health Organization anticipated everything that was necessary to fight it since 1997, when that international organism suggested to be prepared because the bird flu H5N1 was suffering mutations and was creating a new type of virus that have already caused human deaths. This information allowed the creation of strategies to protect the wor

The risk of seasonal and pandemic influenza: prospects for control.

Seasonal influenza is an underappreciated cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Seasonal vaccination of individuals in groups at high risk of complications has long been recommended. However, there has been a gradual expansion of the recommended groups for annual influenza immunization in order to reduce the incidence of uncomplicated infection, to alleviate the impact of seasonal influenza on health care, and to simplify the application of recommendations. The threat of an influenza pandemic, heightened by recent cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza in humans, requires

Antiviral drugs for the control of pandemic influenza virus.

In the advent of an influenza virus pandemic it is likely that the administration of antiviral drugs will be an important first line of defence against the virus. The drugs currently in use are effective against seasonal influenza virus infection, and some cases have been used in the treatment of patients infected with the avian H5N1 influenza virus. However, it is becoming clear that the emergence of drug-resistant viruses will potentially be a major problem in the future efforts to control influenza virus infection. In addition, during a new pandemic, sufficient quantities of these agents wi

[The plague of the third pandemic and its current remergence].

The reappearance of the plague in the 19th century, in what is generally referred to as the third pandemic, brought back painful memories of the great plague outbreaks of the past that had killed tens of millions of people. At the same time, this new pandemic opened the era of great discoveries, such as identification of the Yersinia pestis bacterium, of transmission vectors and the first effective treatments. With these advances it became possible to control a disease which had, because of progress in maritime transport, spread almost throughout the world.

Antivirals for the treatment and prevention of epidemic and pandemic influenza.

Influenza is a highly contagious and debilitating disease that imposes an excess burden of complications and mortality. Antiviral therapy is the primary intervention for treatment and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) of influenza. Amantadine and rimantadine are members of the M2 class of antiviral agents and are moderately effective in influenza management. However, their utility is compromised by high levels of resistance, tolerability concerns and a lack of efficacy against influenza B. An alternative class of agents, the neuraminidase inhibitors (NIs), represent the most advanced form of ant

Confronting an influenza pandemic: ethical and scientific issues.

The prolonged concern over the potential for a global influenza pandemic to cause perhaps many millions of fatalities is a chilling one. After the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) scares [1], attention has turned towards the possibility of an avian influenza virus hybridizing with a human influenza virus to create a highly virulent, as yet unknown, killer, on a scale unseen since the Spanish flu outbreak of 1918, which produced more fatalities than the Great War. In deciding how countries should react to this potential pandemic, individually and collectively, a reasonable and practical

Seasonal and pandemic influenza preparedness: a global threat.

The increase in the incidence of avian influenza worldwide in both poultry and humans introduces the potential for another influenza A pandemic that could pose a significant threat to both human health and the global economy. The impact of the next influenza pandemic will be influenced, in part, by how well the medical, government, business, and lay communities are prepared. Despite the additional tools and resources that have become available since prior epidemics, there are limits to the quantity of antiviral drugs that can be manufactured and concerns over the current vaccine production sys

A Comprehensive Overview on the Production of Vaccines in Plant-Based Expression Systems and the Scope of Plant Biotechnology to Combat against SARS-CoV-2 Virus Pandemics.

Many pathogenic viral pandemics have caused threats to global health; the COVID-19 pandemic is the latest. Its transmission is growing exponentially all around the globe, putting constraints on the health system worldwide. A novel coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), causes this pandemic. Many candidate vaccines are available at this time for COVID-19, and there is a massive international race underway to procure as many vaccines as possible for each country. However, due to heavy global demand, there are strains in global vaccine production. The use of a …

Well-being and healthcare work over the pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Well-being in the healthcare sector is of substantial policy relevance, given persistent labour shortages and the central role of subjective well-being in worker productivity and retention. OBJECTIVE: We investigate changes in healthcare workers' life satisfaction since the onset of the pandemic relative to workers in other essential and non-essential sectors, and examine the role of pandemic severity and subsequent policy responses in explaining these differences. METHODS: We use thirteen waves of quarterly panel data from the COME-HERE dataset, which collects information on res
