A 68-year-old woman and her 28-year-old son ate some rare fresh-water crabs (Eriocheir japonicus). The son became ill one month later with pleural effusion. After 10 months the mother's symptoms included cough, hemosputum and a nodular shadow on her chest X-ray. In an attempt to find a small animal model for paragonimiasis, Syrian hamsters were infected with between 1 and 16 metacercariae of Paragonimus kellicotti. A definitive mortality dose-response was observed with 90% of all hamsters given 3 or more parasites succumbing to the infection within 35 days. In order to observe the antigenic fractions in saline extract of adult Paragonimus westermani, proteins in the crude extract were separated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) in reducing conditions. Both immunoenzymatic staining technique (IEST) and indirect fluorescent antibody test. Three unusual cases of mastoid abscess are described. Case histories and the clinical, laboratory, radiological, surgical, and histopathological findings in the patients are reported. Operculated eggs measuring about 60 mu times 40 mu were seen in pus obtained from two cases, but no adult worm was recovered. The findings suggest that the infections could have been caused by either Paragonimus species or Poikilorchis (Achillurbania) species.
