CRISPR-Cas technology accelerates development of fast, accurate, and portable diagnostic tools, typified by recent applications in COVID-19 diagnosis. Parasitic helminths cause devastating diseases afflicting 1.5 billion people globally, representing a significant public health and economic burden, especially in developing countries. Currently available diagnostic tests for worm infection are neither sufficiently sensitive nor field-friendly for use in low-endemic or resource-poor settings, leading to underestimation of true prevalence rates. Mass drug administration programs are unsustainable

BACKGROUND: Techniques for diagnosing intestinal parasites need technological advancements in the preanalytical (collection/processing) and analytical (detection) stages. The dissolved air flotation (DAF) technique effectively recovers parasites from processed feces for routine diagnosis. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a practical and affordable alternative to modernize the analysis stage of microscopy images and generates high efficiency in the parasitological examination of feces.
METHODS: The objective of this study was to standardize a laboratory protocol for stool processing using the D…

Extrauterine leiomyomas are rare histologically benign tumors. These usually arise in the pelvis and may develop an auxiliary blood supply and become parasitic. Parasitic leiomyoma occurring in patients without prior abdominal or pelvic surgery is extremely rare, with fewer than 30 reported cases in the literature. We report a rare case of parasitic leiomyoma in a 41-year-old woman with no uterine leiomyoma or history of previous surgery. She presented with recurrent lower abdominal pain of one-month duration, and ultrasound revealed a solid, heterogeneously hypoechoic lesion in the hypogastri

Cancer does not simply develop unchecked-it strategically exploits its host with parasitic precision. From immune evasion to tissue remodeling, cancer cells mirror the survival strategies of parasitic helminths. This resemblance suggests that malignant cells have co-opted deeply conserved, evolutionarily honed tactics used by parasites to persist within their hosts. By mimicking helminths, cancer cells may also engage type-2 immune responses, traditionally associated with anti-parasitic defense, as part of the host's attempt to control their expansion. Such parallels could also help explain wh…

A 27-year-old patient came to the dermatology outpatient clinic of the Erasmus MC because of progressive swelling, pain, itching and skin lesions of the left foot for two days. The symptoms initially started with erythematous urticarial papules and vesicles. After a day severe swelling of the forefoot, bullae around the toes and several slowly progressive serpiginous plaques developed without systemic complaints. A week before the onset of the symptoms, he had returned from a trip to Colombia. Under the working diagnosis of cutaneous larva migrans, ivermectin 0.2 mg/kg for two consecutive days

Parasitic agents have been known to cause human disease since ancient times and are endemic in tropical and subtropical regions. Complications of parasitic diseases, including kidney involvement, are associated with worse outcomes. Chagas disease, filariasis, leishmaniasis, malaria and schistosomiasis are important parasitic diseases that can damage the kidney. These diseases affect millions of people worldwide, primarily in Africa, Asia and Latin America, and kidney involvement is associated with increased mortality. The most common kidney complications of parasitic diseases are acute kidney

Before starting immunosuppressive therapy, it is important to screen for latent tuberculosis and, in case of particular exposures (e.g. travel, origin,…), for parasitosis such as amoebiasis, echinococcosis, strongyloidiasis and American trypanosomiasis. The Division of Tropical and Humanitarian Medicine of the Geneva University Hospitals has developed an algorithm to identify which screening is recommended according to exposure. Analysis of this practice shows that the most frequently detected latent disease is tuberculosis, followed by strongyloidiasis. For the latter, as the sensitivity of t

Roma people are the largest minority group in Europe. The vast majority live in substandard conditions in segregated settlements, overcrowded with people and animals that predispose them to various, especially zoonotic diseases. Parasitic zoonotic diseases remain a challenge in this vulnerable population group, especially among Roma children. PubMed was searched using the keywords Roma with combination of names of different parasites to get all available studies on prevalence of parasitic zoonoses among European Roma, published between years 2000 and 2020. After application of exclusion criter…

Much of the vast evolutionary landscape occupied by Eukaryotes is dominated by protists. Though parasitism has arisen in many lineages, there are three main groups of parasitic protists of relevance to human and livestock health: the Apicomplexa, including the malaria parasite Plasmodium and coccidian pathogens of livestock such as Eimeria; the excavate flagellates, encompassing a diverse range of protist pathogens including trypanosomes, Leishmania, Giardia and Trichomonas; and the Amoebozoa, including pathogenic amoebae such as Entamoeba. These three groups represent separate, deep branches

Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is a parasitic protist that can infect nearly all nucleated cell types and tissues of warm-blooded vertebrate … nhances dissemination within tissues. Collectively, the available evidence indicates that T. gondii parasites use multiple means to disseminate within the host, including enhanced motility in tissues and translocation across biological barriers.

BACKGROUND: Parasitic infestation of the eyes are a major cause of ocular diseases across the globe. Filarial and filarial-like nematodes top the list of the nematodes that affect the eye.
CASE: A rare case of live sub retinal worm is reported in a 25 years old apparently healthy young male. The case presented with unilateral loss of vision and floaters in the affected eye. Upon examination a live subfoveal worm was identified with continuous wriggling movements and diffuse retinal edema. The worm was removed surgically and sent for parasitological examination.
OBSERVATION: The worm was iden

Naegleria fowleri causes an uncommon but deadly disease called primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). There has been an increase of reported PAM cases, particularly since 2000. Although water is the dominant route of transmission of PAM, infection through soil/dust is a possible alternative route. We have observed differences in epidemiology between the southern states in the USA and the Indian subcontinent (ISC). The patient age range is greater in the ISC than in the USA, and there are more infections in the ISC which are not water-associated. We show that PAM is under-reported and argue

Parasitic infestations commonly are seen in patients in primary care, urgent care, and EDs. These infestations are a common cause of pruritus and may lead to secondary infestations. This article reviews the signs and symptoms of pinworms, lice, bedbug, and scabies infestations, as well as diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
