The cardiovascular response to exercise is largely determined by neurocirculatory control mechanisms that help to raise blood pressure and modulate vascular resistance which, in concert with regional vasodilatory mechanisms, promote blood flow to active muscle and organs. These neurocirculatory control mechanisms include a feedforward mechanism, known as central command, and three feedback mechanisms, namely, 1) the baroreflex, 2) the exercise pressor reflex, and 3) the arterial chemoreflex. The hemodynamic consequences of these control mechanisms result from their influence on the autonomic n

The autonomic nervous system regulates cardiac function by balancing the actions of sympathetic and parasympathetic inputs to the heart. Intrinsic cardiac neurocircuits integrate these autonomic signals to fine-tune cardiac control, and sensory feedback loops regulate autonomic transmission in the face of external stimuli. These interconnected neural systems allow the heart to adapt to constantly changing circumstances that range from simple fluctuations in body position to running a marathon. The cardiac reflexes that serve to maintain homeostasis in health are disrupted in many disease state

A prototype of a biofeedback system designed to treat dyslexia by improving heart-rate variability was evaluated in a single blind study of dyslexic adults. Treatment consisted of four 15 minute exposures to a visual display synchronized with either the participant's own cardiac cycle (intervention condition), or of a synthesized cardiac cycle (placebo condition). Repeated measures were made of picture naming speed, single word reading speed and accuracy, copying speed, heart-rate variability and performance on a lateralized visual temporal order judgement task. Small but significant improveme

INTRODUCTION: Parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS) function can be inferred by heart rate variability (HRV) providing indications about an individual's health. Manual therapy may influence PSNS function, however the research outcomes in this regard are equivocal. This study explored the PSNS effect of a measured breathing technique with suboccipital balanced ligamentous tension, an osteopathic manipulative therapy technique.
METHODS: Healthy adult participants in this crossover study (n = 18) were randomly allocated into two groups with differing order of interventions. A 1:1 breathing rate …

AIM: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus exhibited autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction and comorbidities with depressive or anxiety symptoms were related to poor glycemic control. Heart rate variability (HRV) converted from electrocardiogram (ECG) has been used as the ANS index. The study aimed to explore the associations between depression, anxiety, HRV, and glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
METHODS: The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) questionnaires were used to assess depressive and anxiety symptoms in 64

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between autonomic nerve activity and symptom intensity according to the type of dry eye (DE).
METHODS: This prospective, cross-sectional, comparative study included 25 eyes of 25 patients with short tear break-up time DE (sBUTDE; mean age = 57.4 ± 11.4 years, range = 30-74 years) and 24 eyes of 24 patients with aqueous tear-deficient DE (ADDE; mean age = 62.3 ± 10.7 years, range = 29-76 years) were studied. Autonomic nerve activity was examined, and the Japanese version of the Ocular Surface Disease Index (J-OSDI) and a str

There are numerous differences in arrhythmia propensity and cardiac electrophysiology between women and men. One proposed reason is differences in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) influence. We therefore compared the sympathetic and parasympathetic influence (sympathovagal balance) on the sinoatrial node (SAN) at rest in healthy young women (n = 15) and men (n = 15) with a mean age of 24 yr. Pharmacological blockade of the ANS influence on the SAN was induced by sequential bolus injections of atropine (0.04 mg/kg body wt) and propranolol (0.2 mg/kg body wt) during continuous electrocardiogra

Alterations in associative threat learning have been thought to underlie the aetiology and maintenance of anxiety disorders. Recent insights into the facilitatory role of parasympathetic arousal for threat coping have raised the question whether individual differences in sympathetic versus parasympathetic dominance during threat learning may shed light on the complex relationship with anxiety vulnerability versus resilience. We applied an established differential-cue delay threat conditioning paradigm in 78 neurotypical individuals and assessed parasympathetic responses (threat-induced bradyca

In the gastrointestinal tract, nitrergic inhibition of the arteriolar contractility has not been demonstrated. Here, we explored whether neurally-released nitric oxide (NO) inhibits sympathetic vasoconstrictions in the rat rectal arterioles. Changes in sympathetic vasoconstrictions and their nitrergic modulation in rats exposed to water avoidance stress (WAS, 10 days, 1 h per day) were also examined. In rectal submucosal preparations, changes in arteriolar diameter were monitored using video microscopy. In control or sham-treated rats, electrical field stimulation (EFS)-induced sympathetic vas

Using vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), we sought to determine the contribution of vagal afferents to efferent control of cardiac function. In anesthetized dogs, the right and left cervical vagosympathetic trunks were stimulated in the intact state, following ipsilateral or contralateral vagus nerve transection (VNTx), and then following bilateral VNTx. Stimulations were performed at currents from 0.25 to 4.0 mA, frequencies from 2 to 30 Hz, and a 500-μs pulse width. Right or left VNS evoked significantly greater current- and frequency-dependent suppression of chronotropic, inotropic, and lusitro

A microdialysis method was developed to sample norepinephrine and acetylcholine from the heart of freely moving rats. A flexible dialysis fiber (length 14 mm), with a copper wire inserted inside, was implanted into the heart. Extracellular norepinephrine was detectable for at least 72 h after implantation. Basal output levels 24 h after surgery were 140 pg/ml when corrected for in vitro recovery. Evidence was provided that the major part of norepinephrine in dialysates is derived from local neurotransmission. Acetylcholine was only detectable in cardiac dialysates when an esterase inhibitor wa

In the present study the acute effect of intravenous aluminum chloride (1 mg/kg) on choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities of rats was investigated. Aluminum was found to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) as indicated by the detection of aluminum in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) 30 min after femoral vein injection. Two hours following aluminum injection, ChAT activity in the basal forebrain and hippocampus was significantly reduced by 30% and 22%, respectively, whereas no change was observed in the caudate nuclei. On the other hand, AChE activity was sign

The physiopathological mechanisms underlying the multifactorial syndrome that is asthma are very complex and protean. Most probably, they are genetically determined, but they are largely modulated by the environment and by the inflammation of bronchi in which allergy occupies a special place. Chemical mediators of cellular origin interact with each other and with the cells that live or are recruited in the airways. Among these mediators histamine and arachidonic acid metabolites seem to play a predominant role, but the clinical use of antagonists has not confirmed the data obtained in vitro an

Recent studies suggest that vagal nerve dysfunction may be important in the aetiology of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. Delayed oesophageal transit and slowed gastric emptying occur frequently and may also be of pathogenic importance. In 48 patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease we studied the prevalence of and relations between autonomic nerve dysfunction (as assessed by cardiovascular reflex tests) and oesophageal transit, oesophageal motility, gastric emptying, and endoscopic grade of oesophagitis. Of the 48 patients, 21 (44%) had abnormal autonomic nerve function, which was pr

Neurochemical and histochemical techniques for characterization of neurotransmitters and their receptors in normal and pathological human brain have modified our understanding of Alzheimer's disease. From a hopeless clinico-pathological entity, it has become one of the models of possible physiopathological relations between neurotransmitter anomalies and dementia processes. Three types of neuromediator (or neuro-modulator): cholinergic, aminergic and peptidergic, appear to be affected to different degrees in 5 electively involved anatomical systems: cholinergic innominocorticoamygdalian and se

In order to elucidate the parasympathetic activity of the uninhibited neurogenic bladder, controlled cystometry before and during influence of cholinergic and anticholinergic drugs has been performed on patients with normal and uninhibited neurogenic bladder. Cholinergic stimulation proved to increase the intravesical pressure to a great extent; to a higher degree in the normal than in the uninhibited bladder. In two patients with normal bladder, uninhibited detrusor contractions were induced by cholinergic stimulation. Cholinergic inhibition had only minor influence on the intravesical pressu

1. The progressive effects of a single injection (3mg/kg i.v.) of either vinblastine or vincristine on the innervation of the rat atria have been examined. 2. Functional studies were performed by stimulating electrically the noradrenergic or cholinergic nerve fibres within isolated left atria from treated and control rats. In addition, the effects of the drugs on the ultrastructure of both types of nerve fibre were examined. The noradrenergic innervation was further examined by fluorescence histochemistry and measurement of the noradrenaline content of the atria. 3. On the basis of these studi
