'Partnership with parents'--a progressive pathway.

This paper presents the problems associated with the implementation of a new model of service delivery involving parent programmes. Factors affecting the cost-effectiveness included the influence of the learning curve. Change, innovation and adoption will be discussed in relation to the new model of service delivery. The correlation with years of experience will also be considered.

Parental hostility: impact on the family.

This study examined the effects of parental hostility on the families of 100 psychiatrically hospitalized children. Parents and their children were administered an assessment battery. The results for families who scored high on parental hostility were compared to families with low parental hostility. Parents who exhibited high hostility scored differently on a variety of temperament constructs (e.g., lower adaptability, worse mood, and lower rhythmicity) than parents who scored low in hostility. High parental hostility was also associated with an elevated level of family relation problems, whi

[Presence of parents in pediatric imaging].

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the attitude of French pediatric radiologists regarding the presence or absence of parents during pediatric imaging of their child. A mail survey was sent to the French members of the "Société Francophone de Radiologie Pédiatrique". We asked about the inclusion of parents during pediatric imaging procedures. They gave the reasons for their choice and stated if parental presence was helpful or not for the achievement of imaging procedures. Responses were received from 76% of those surveyed. Excluding vascular and interventional procedures, few responden

Neuropsychological dysfunction in parents of schizophrenics.

Neuropsychological measures designed to examine aspects of attention, learning efficiency, and memory were investigated in 14 schizophrenic probands, their 28 parents, and 18 normal individuals. Probands performed at levels significantly below normals on measures of attention and of learning efficiency and performed below their parents on a subset of the same measures. Eight families had one parent with a personal or ancestral pedigree history consistent with schizophrenia; the other parent's personal and ancestral history was negative for schizophrenia. In these families, the probands were si

Gender differences in parental grief.

Gender differences in grief of parents who lost their child were examined using the Grief Experience Inventory. Participants were 35 bereaved couples who ranged in age from 27 to 73. Spina bifida and parental occupation.

To examine the association between parental occupation and spina bifida in offspring, we conducted a multicenter case-referent study in the Netherlands. Cases were children with spina bifida aperta from nine different hospitals throughout the country; the referent group comprised population-based referents who were randomly drawn from municipal birth registries. All children were born between 1980 and 1992. We collected data using postal questionnaires for both parents with questions about occupational title, industry, daily occupational activities, and a number of potential confounders. We we

Parental anxiety in febrile convulsions.

Febrile convulsions can cause extreme anxiety to parents. Factors associated with parental anxiety and its relief during and after admission of their child for simple febrile convulsions were studied by questionnaire. Of the 70 parents approached 46 responded (66%), all of whom reported feeling anxiety. Factors directly associated with parental anxiety were lack of knowledge regarding the management of seizures and the performance of a spinal tap or EEG. There was no correlation between a previous seizure in the same child or in a first-degree relative and a decrease in anxiety in the present

Children of alcoholic parents. A review.

Children of alcoholics are prone to genetic, environmental, and teratogenic risk factors. This review starts by outlining the development risks due to intrauterine exposure to alcohol. Furthermore, the overall findings from genetic research are summarized. A further section deals with the analysis of the environment of the family with an alcoholic parent. Within the section on psychopathology the special links to conduct disorders and delinquency, hyperkinetic disorders, substance abuse, anxiety and depression, and somatic problems are described. Special consideration is also given to the lite

Psychologists and children of alcoholic parents.

Clinical evidence has pictured children of alcoholic parents as vulnerable physically, emotionally, socially, academically, and at risk for alcoholism. Review of research indicated that some of these clinical insights have been validated, but much more is needed to fill out an accurate picture for psychologists who will be asked to work with them.

Parental consanguinity and the Majewski syndrome.

We report a female infant with the Majewski syndrome, one of a group of conditions characterised by short ribs, polydactyly, dwarfism, and early neonatal death. This syndrome seems to be extremely rare, with only five well documented cases reported and, including this case, nine recorded in all. The Majewski syndrome is considered to be recessively inherited, and this report adds further support to this hypothesis, as the infant was born to consanguineous parents.

Parents' evaluations of genetic counselling.

Genetic counseling represents a new and important health service, but little is known about how the clients of genetic clinics actually experience and view the genetic counseling process. This paper reports on the evaluations made by clients of a genetics clinic and their recommendations for ways to improve and expand this service. In their comments, clients stressed the need for more time and individual attention from genetic counsellors, additional follow-up and supportive counselling, and increased efforts to educate the general public about birth defects. Their recommendations are discusse

Treatment for the parents of feminine boys.

Because extreme boyhood femininity is often a precursor of adult transsexualism, transvestism, and homosexuality, the author recommends early intervention for boys who meet specific behavioral criteria of gender disturbance. It is necessary to involve the parents in such treatment and to deal with the resistances they may have to recognizing and working on the problem as well as problems within the marital relationship that may affect the child's behavior. These boys are remarkably responsive to treatment given between the ages of 5 and 12, becoming more masculine in behavior and more comforta
