OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of parotid gland tumors is challenging due to their rarity and heterogenity. Neither conventional ultrasound nor magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) nor computed tomography (CT) allow a reliable pretherapeutic diagnosis. In addition to conventional ultrasound, contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) enables a more detailed assessment of perfusion in parotid gland tumors, thereby improving evaluation of this tumor entity. Extensive studies with analysis of perfusion characteristics in different regions of interest (ROI) in parotid gland tumors are currently lacking. This study

Objective:The aim of this study is to explore the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of first bite syndrome(FBS). Method:Clinical data of six patients with FBS were analyzed retrospectively. There were 4 cases of parapharyngeal space tumor resection complicated with FBS, 1 case of parotidectomy of deep lobe parotid gland tumor complicated with FBS, and 1 case of no definite cause. Analgesic treatments such as ibuprofen and tramadol capsules were given, in combination with carbamazepine (200 mg, 3 times a day) for four weeks. Result:The severity of symptoms decreased in five cases, 2-16 months a

Lymphoma of the salivary gland accounts for 5% of cases of extranodal lymphoma and 10% of malignant salivary gland tumors. Most primary salivary gland lymphomas are B marginal zone lymphomas arising on a background of sialadenitis associated with an autoimmune disorder such as Sjorgen's syndrome. This report describes a case of primary B-cell lymphoma arising in the parotid gland in a middle-aged female, which was not associated with an autoimmune disorder. Immunohistochemistry studies confirmed the clonal B-cell nature of the tumor. This case highlights the fact that B-cell lymphoma in the sa

PURPOSE: To evaluate the usefulness of pressure bandage with kidney-shaped cotton pad in parotidectomy and the relevant factors of parotid salivary fistula occurring after parotidectomy.
METHODS: One hundred and ninety-six patients with parotid benign tumor or tumor-like lesions were randomly divided into two groups, 100 cases in the kidney-shaped cotton pad group and 96 cases in the traditional management group. The incidence of postoperative salivary in relation to surgical procedure, main parotid duct ligation, and parotid salivary fistula was analyzed. SPSS13.0 software package was used f

Carcinomas arising in or from the epithelial component of preexisting parotid Warthin tumors (WTs) are rare; the other histologic types of carcinoma found to arise from WTs are adenocarcinoma not otherwise specified, undifferentiated, mucoepidermoid, squamous cell, and oncocytic. The aim of this study is to describe the clinicopathologic features of a distinct salivary gland neoplasm, previously undescribed, with a striated duct phenotype arising from WT. We have designated this neoplasm "Warthin adenocarcinoma" (WA). In this retrospective study, we searched the surgical pathology files of the

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCC) are malignant tumours with excellent prognosis unless nodal metastases develop. The aim of our study is to determine the prognostic significance of the clinical stage of parotid gland metastases and the incidence of occult cervical lymph node involvement in cSCC of the head. Our retrospective analysis includes 39 patients with cSCC parotid gland metastases, 15 of whom had concurrent cervical node involvement. In 32 patients, the lymph nodes manifested at stage N3b. A total of 26 patients were treated with parotidectomy, 9 patients received radiotherapy

Trichilemmal carcinoma is a rare malignant cutaneous adnexal neoplasm arising from the outer root sheath of the hair follicle. Majority of cases occur on sun-exposed sites such as the face, scalp and neck, making them easily amenable to being biopsied and subjected to histological examination for definitive diagnosis. Thus, cytological features of trichilemmal carcinoma have not been described till date. Trichilemmal carcinoma is a low-grade malignancy, albeit with potential to metastasize to regional lymph nodes and distant sites. We report the case of trichilemmal carcinoma of scalp that met

INTRODUCTION: The authors present the guidelines of the French Society of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (SFORL) for the management of recurrent pleomorphic adenoma (RPA) of the parotid gland.
METHOD: A review of the literature was performed by a multidisciplinary task force. Guidelines were drafted, based on the articles retrieved and the work group members' individual experience. There were then read and re-edited by an independent reading group. The proposed recommendations were graded A, B or C on decreasing levels of evidence.
RESULTS: Complete resection under neuromonitoring

Non-sebaceous lymphadenoma (NSL) of the parotid gland is a rare benign tumor. During diagnosis, NSL may be confused with malignant tumors such as lymphoepithelial carcinoma, which can result in overtreatment. In this article, the clinical data and histopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of two NSL patients were retrospectively analyzed, and the relevant literature was reviewed. The clinical primary manifestation of the cases was a painless mass located in the lower pole of the parotid gland. On histological examination, the tumor was found to comprise epithelial components an

Primary melanoma of the parotid gland is an extremely rare and challenging tumor with a poor prognosis, and its ultrasonic characteristics have yet to be reported. This article presents a case of a 77-year-old man with a left parotid mass that was confirmed as a melanoma following surgery. The ultrasonic features of melanoma were examined in detail, with a particular focus on their diagnostic value. Furthermore, we summarized the clinical characteristics, treatment options, and outcomes associated with primary melanoma of the parotid gland based on a thorough analysis of the available literatu

Warthin's tumor (WT) is a benign and frequent salivary gland tumor primarily affecting the parotid gland. In some cases, this tumor can involve the extra parotid region and affect cervical lymph nodes. Fine-needle aspiration can be the first step in the diagnostic approach to lymphadenopathy; however, specimens from intra-nodal WT can present a potential pitfall, leading to a misdiagnosis of metastasis. Here, we report an unusual case of a patient with bilateral WT in parotid lymph nodes misdiagnosed as metastases. In addition, we highlight the cytopathological aspects of WT to alert cytopatho

Gland-preserving surgery has been introduced to reduce the complications of conventional parotidectomy that requires removal of total superficial or entire parotid gland along with the tumour. Several cosmetic incisions have also been developed along with conservative parotid surgery involving partial dissection of the facial nerve and gland. The incision length in the cosmetic approaches is gradually shortened from facelift to periauricular incision, and endoscopic parotidectomy techniques emerged. A more functional approach via postauricular sulcus incision was also introduced to remove beni

To describe the key technical points for preserving the great auricular nerve during parotidectomy for tumor, and to discuss the literature regarding the benefits, limitations and indications for nerve-sparing surgery. Data suggested that great auricular nerve preservation should be discussed in the preoperative consultation, attempted intraoperatively and mentioned in the operative report once parotidectomy completed.

Acinar cell carcinoma of the salivary gland (AciCC) is a rare low-grade epithelial malignant tumor of the salivary gland. The primary site of the disease is often in the parotid gland, followed by the submandibular gland and small salivary gland. In the early stage of the disease, there are no obvious symptoms, most of which are slow enlargement of the mass, accompanied by local pain or discomfort, or facial paralysis involving the facial nerve. Although the disease is a low-grade malignant tumor, it is invasive to a certain extent and prone to recurrence and metastasis. The metastasis sites a
