Infectious disease threats are increasingly recognized as a major contributor to mortality in wild populations of African wild dog (Lycaon pictus, AWD). Canine distemper virus (CDV) infection has been implicated as a cause of pack mortality in both captive and wild AWD populations. Ten animals were vaccinated with RecombitekTM C3, a vaccine containing a recombinant CDV, and modified live canine parvovirus (CPV) and adenovirus-2 components, at 8, 12, and 16 wk of age. Half of the pups received the vaccine IM and the other half SC. All ten pups had a positive serological response to CDV after th…

Posttransplant anemia is a common complication after kidney transplantation. Parvovirus B19 (PVB19) infection can induce pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) in immunosuppressed transplant patients. We herein report a case of recurrent PVB19-associated PRCA in a kidney transplant patient. A 49-year-old woman presented with anemia and normal renal function 1 year after a deceased-donor kidney transplantation for immunoglobulin A nephropathy-related end-stage renal disease. She received desensitization therapy, and 2 years later, she underwent transplantation with thymoglobulin induction. Despite repeat…

A concurrent outbreak of infection by canine parvovirus 2b (CPV-2b) and Clostridium difficile producing A and/or B toxins occurred in Asian small-clawed otters (Amblonyx cinereus). The 5 clinically affected otters were 6- to 24-mo-old intact females that had severe diarrhea, dehydration, were acutely comatose, and died 1-4 d after the onset of clinical signs. Postmortem examination was performed in 3 of 7 otters. Macroscopically, the small intestine was diffusely reddened and contained red-to-brown, malodorous, watery digesta without formed feces (3 of 3). Histologic examination identified los…

Human parvovirus B19 (B19) infection is common among blood donors, and healthy blood donors can transmit virus via transfusion. Due to resistance of B19 to viral inactivation methods, there is a potential concern regarding transfusion safety in blood products. We aimed to determine the seroprevalence, molecular epidemiology, and quantitation of B19 DNA levels in blood donors in Tehran, Iran. A total of 500 blood donors from Blood Transfusion Research Center were studied. ELISA was used for detection of B19 IgG and IgM and nested PCR was carried out for detection of B19 DNA. PCR products were s…

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic abnormalities during canine parvovirus (CPV) enteritis have not been studied prospectively.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic significance of canine serum pancreas-specific lipase (Spec cPL) concentration in dogs with CPV enteritis for the presence of acute pancreatitis (AP). Puppies with naturally occurring CPV enteritis were recruited and prospectively allocated into 2 groups according to normal or increased serum Spec cPL concentration. Clinical signs, laboratory findings, and pancreas-associated variables were compared between gr…

Chicken parvovirus (ChPV) has been associated with malabsorption syndrome (MAS) in broilers. However, the participation of this virus in such syndrome is unclear, since it may be detected in diseased and healthy chickens. In the course of these studies, it was argued whether ChPV genome loads might be correlated to the occurrence of MAS. To check such a hypothesis, a SYBR green-based quantitative polymerase chain reaction was developed to detect and quantify ChPV genomes. Cloacal swabs from 68 broilers with MAS and 59 from healthy animals were collected from different poultry farms. Genomes of…

INTRODUCTION: According to some studies, ascorbic acid possesses antiviral properties. These studies were mainly focused on the common cold, with very few focusing on other viral infections.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 54-year-old Caucasian woman with chronic arthralgia due to persistent parvovirus B19 viremia. High doses of ascorbic acid treatment were initiated due to the failure of conventional analgesic therapy. Clinical benefit was observed with a simultaneous loss of biological parvovirus B19 viremia.
CONCLUSIONS: This observation shows a potential benefit of the use of …

Acute maternal Parvovirus B19 infection affects about 1% of all pregnancies worldwide. Diaplacental transmission of Parvovirus B19 during the second trimester can cause complications like foetal hydrops, premature delivery or foetal loss in about 20-30% of these pregnancies, whereas the majority of maternal infections remain clinically silent. In individual cases, foetoplacental hydrops (of various origins) can trigger a rare form of Preeclampsia in the pregnant woman. The developing maternal oedema in this situation apparently "mirrors" the hydropic state of the foetus. The symptom triad of f…

Parvoviruses cause a variety of mild to severe symptoms or asymptomatic infections in humans and animals. During a viral metagenomic analysis of feces from children with acute diarrhea in Burkina Faso, we identified in decreasing prevalence nucleic acids from anelloviruses, dependoviruses, sapoviruses, enteroviruses, bocaviruses, noroviruses, adenoviruses, parechoviruses, rotaviruses, cosavirus, astroviruses, and hepatitis B virus. Sequences from a highly divergent parvovirus, provisionally called bufavirus, were also detected whose NS1 and VP1 proteins showed <39% and <31% identities to those…

Infection by DNA viruses can elicit DNA damage responses (DDRs) in host cells. In some cases the DDR presents a block to viral replication that must be overcome, and in other cases the infecting agent exploits the DDR to facilitate replication. We find that low multiplicity infection with the autonomous parvovirus minute virus of mice (MVM) results in the activation of a DDR, characterized by the phosphorylation of H2AX, Nbs1, RPA32, Chk2 and p53. These proteins are recruited to MVM replication centers, where they co-localize with the main viral replication protein, NS1. The response is seen i…

Parvovirus B19 (B19V) has been detected in the liver of Asian patients infected with HBV and may contribute to acute and chronic liver disease. This study aimed to investigate the impact of B19V infection in European patients with viral hepatitis. B19V DNA was detected in 1/91 and 0/50 serum samples from patients with chronic hepatitis C and B, respectively. In contrast, B19V DNA was amplified frequently from explanted end-stage liver tissues (37/50, 74%) and from routine biopsy samples (14/32, 44%) (P < 0.05). However, there was no significant difference in B19V copy number per cell between t…

UNLABELLED: Human parvovirus B19 (PVB19) is the etiologic agent of erythema infectiosum (fifth disease), a common childhood exanthema. Immunocompromised patients risk developing chronic infections leading to pure red blood cell aplasia. Herein we have reported our experience with two pediatric renal transplant recipients who had severe pure red cell aplasia in the early period after surgery, accompanying PVB19 infection.
FIRST CASE: A 6-year-old boy underwent pro emptive living-related renal transplantation in September 2006. On day 4, he developed abdominal discomfort and diarrhea. After tra…

A 21-year-old previously healthy male presented with prolonged fever of 3 weeks duration and profound agranulocytosis that did not respond to treatment with granulocyte-stimulating factors. A bone marrow biopsy demonstrated an absence of myeloid lineage. Acute parvovirus B19 infection was diagnosed by the presence of both IgM and IgG anti-parvovirus antibodies. Two days treatment with intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIg) resulted in complete recovery. The role of treatment with immunoglobulins in acute and persistent parvovirus infection is discussed.

We report on a 5-year-old girl who suddenly collapsed and died while dancing at a family party. Histological examination of the heart including the cardiac conduction system revealed lymphocytic infiltrations of the sinu-atrial node and perivascular infiltration in the atrio-ventricular region. Additionally, foci of mononuclear infiltrates were observed in the myocardium. Consequently, myocarditis was diagnosed as cause of death. The child also had lymphocytic conjunctivis, parotitis and tracheitis. Evaluation of infections by means of nested polymerase chain reaction revealed parvovirus B19 D…

An 11-year-old patient with anamnestic fever for 3 days and signs of upper respiratory tract infection underwent fulminant Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia with concomitant agranulocytosis. From autopsia influenza B virus and parvovirus B19 were detected by nucleic acid amplification technique (NAT). Specific IgG but no IgM points to preexisting parvovirus B19 infection. Whether in this case agranulocytosis can be interpreted as early manifestation of reactivated parvovirus B19 infection is under discussion. Therefore, parvovirus B19 could have provoked a foudroyant course of influenza B pneumo…

Parvovirus B19 is the causative agent of erythema infectiosum. In addition, parvovirus B19 infection may be associated with other disease manifestations, namely, thrombocytopenia or granulocytopenia, spontaneous abortion or hydrops fetalis in pregnant women, acute and chronic arthritis, and systemic lupus erythematosus. Based on sequence homology data, a phospholipase A2 motif has been identified in the VP1 unique region of parvovirus B19. (Y. Li et al., J. Gen. Virol. 82:2821-2825, 2001; Z. Zadori et al., Dev. Cell 1:291-302, 2001). We have established a new in vitro assay based on electrospr…
