Kidney pathology in endemic nephropathy.

Histopathologic analysis was made of kidneys from seven cases of typical endemic nephropathy and five cases of probable endemic nephropathy or upper urinary tract carcinoma from Yugoslavia. Glomeruli usually had an increased mesangial matrix and abnormal lobulation, sometimes with vacuolar degeneration. Particularly the straight ascending, descending and Henle loop tubules showed increased epithelial degeneration and regeneration. A network of interstitial scars and a subcapsular stratum of notable cortical degeneration contributed to severe renal atrophy. Unusual intrarenal vein thickening wi

Computed tomography of omental pathology.

Computed tomographic scans were reviewed in 46 patients with documented omental pathology to analyze the radiographic characteristics of benign and malignant disease. The normal omentum is identified on CT of the abdomen as a homogeneous fat density anterior to the transverse colon. Four distinct patterns of omental pathology were identified: (a) omental caking, (b) finely infiltrated fat with a "smudged" appearance, (c) cystic masses, and (d) discrete nodules. The smudged pattern of omental pathology was identified most frequently; it was present in 20 to 39 patients with malignant disease an…

Short stature--physiology and pathology.

Stature, the quantitative measure of height, varies widely within each ethnic group with a fairly normal distribution. Of the numerous patients whom physicians encounter because of short stature, relatively few are pathologically small in the context of family and ethnic background. Physicians must be able to differentiate pathologic short stature from the lower end of the normal curve before embarking on a complex diagnostic evaluation. There are literally hundreds of different causes of short stature, and the clinical evaluation requires a wide variety of clinical, radiographic, pathologic a

Immune pathology in polyarticular osteoarthritis.

Although osteoarthritis (OA) generally is considered a disorder of mechanical origin, the common occurrence of chronic mononuclear cell infiltrates in the synovium in conjunction with immunofluorescent evidence for immune-reactant products in cartilage of surgical case specimens (knees, hips, and peripheral joints) has suggested the local involvement of immune processes in the arthritis. Further, the findings of polyarthropathy in the majority of these cases have indicated the propensity for a systemic disorder. Wide variations were noted in both synovial and cartilage immune changes, quite di

Retrolabyrinthine surgery: anatomy and pathology.

Retrolabyrinthine surgery is done to expose the cerebellopontine angle directly through the ear. It is indicated when the hearing in the ear to be operated upon is useful. The surgical technique entails four steps: complete mastoidectomy, extended posterior exposure of the sigmoid sinus, exposure of the posterior fossa dura, and exposure of the cerebellopontine angle. Retrolabyrinthine exposure of the cerebellopontine angle is indicated in tic douloureux, atypical facial pain, and hemifacial spasm. Recently, this approach has been used for sectioning the vestibular nerve, exploration of the po

Ultrastructural pathology of melanomalytic glaucoma.

A patient presented with a heavily pigmented ciliary body tumour accompanied by diffuse pigmentation of the iris and chamber angle and secondary open angle glaucoma. The case was diagnosed clinically as malignant melanoma and melanomalytic glaucoma, and the eye was enucleated. Routine histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and ultrastructural studies revealed the tumour as being of the spindle cell type with extensive necrosis accompanied by a massive macrophagic response. The iridocorneal angle was heavily infiltrated by large pigmented cells, which were identified as being predominantly melan…

[The nail in vascular pathology].

The nail is part of the ungual unit; it is affected indirectly and late in vascular disease. The authors recall the anatomy and the blood supply of the ungual unit and describe the alterations in terms of the level of the lesion. They describe the changes seen in systemic diseases such as the collagen disease, in vascular disease, venous, arterial and lymphatic disease and in vascular acrosyndromes. These alterations are often a result of several diseases, but may, nevertheless, help orient the diagnosis.

Pathology of equine granulomatous enteritis.

A morphological study on equine granulomatous enteritis (EGE) in 13 horses is presented. All horses were young (1 to 5 years old) standardbreds. Based on gross pathology, cases were classified into those with diffuse (11 cases) and those with localized (2 cases) small bowel lesions. The granulomatous reaction in the gut was marked by diffuse and patchy infiltrates and distinct granulomas, composed of epithelioid cells, macrophages and lymphoid cells, and was devoid of necrosis. Salient accompanying features of the small bowel included lymphoid hyperplasia, peri-lymphatic and transmural inflamm…
