INTRODUCTION: Bleb needling is a recognised procedure in the management of patients with failing trabeculectomies. Suprachoroidal haemorrhage can occur as an unusual complication. We report a pseudophakic man who had early surgical intervention for this complication. This intervention may have contributed to the good recovery of his visual acuity and the minimum changes to his visual fields.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 79-year-old pseudophakic man with chronic open angle glaucoma presented with further deterioration of his right visual field despite maximum medical therapy and a previous trabeculect

Seven eyes had subretinal fibrosis after grid laser photocoagulation for diabetic macular edema. The fibrosis caused persistent loss in visual acuity, and in six of the seven eyes, was not associated with detectable laser-induced Bruch's membrane rupture or subretinal hemorrhage. Choroidal neovascularization was detected in only one patient, who was notably younger (27 years) than the median age of 70 years in this series. The median preoperative visual acuity was 20/80 (range, 20/40 to 20/400); the median postoperative visual acuity was 20/400 (range, 20/80 to counting fingers). The subretina

Two patients with acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epithelialopathy also had cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis and elevated protein levels. A 24-year-old white women had visual acuity of counting fingers in each eye. The cerebrospinal fluid contained 56 lymphocytes per cubic millimeter and a protein level of 48 mg/100 ml. When the retinopathy resolved, visual acuity returned to R.E.: 6/60 (20/200), AND L.E.: 6/9 (20/30). A 22-year-old white man had visual acuity of counting fingers bilaterally. The initial lumbar puncture showed 70 lymphocytes and a protein level of 76 mg/100 ml. A sec

BACKGROUND: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute inflammatory demyelinating disease of the peripheral nervous system. Treatment strategies include systemic steroids, immune adsorption, plasmapheresis, and intravenous immunoglobulins. Optic neuritis as an affectation of the central nervous system does not belong to the normal spectrum of neurological symptoms in GBS, which is thought to be restricted to the peripheral nervous system.
CASE REPORT: A 55-year-old female patient with unilateral optic neuritis secondary to GBS was referred to our department. Visual acuity was 0.04 in the affec

Clinical tests of visual acuity are an important measure of visual function. However visual acuity is usually determined only in narrow range of luminance levels between 160 and 320 cd/m2; therefore losses of visual acuity in other ranges of light intensity can not be detected. In a distance of 80 cm from the patients eyes, Landolt rings of varying sizes were presented on a small test field whose light intensity can be varied between 0.1 and 30,000 cd/m2. Thereby an acuity-luminance-function can be obtained. We studied such functions under different conditions of exposure time both with consta

The recently developed acuity card procedure provides rapid assessment of visual acuity in preverbal infants and thus offers the possibility of monitoring the visual development of infants after early surgery for congenital cataract. This report describes our experience with these acuity cards in seven patients with bilateral and seven patients with unilateral congenital cataract. The age at operation was between 1 week and 17 months; visual acuity was assessed up to an age of maximally 2.5 years. In agreement with previous reports, the development of acuity in infants with unilateral aphakia

We describe a case of corneal chromoblastomycosis with Cladophialophora carrionii in a 69-year-old woman 4 weeks after clear corneal cataract surgery. The patient presented with right eye pain and decreased visual acuity of 20/100. Examination showed a deep posterior stromal keratitis accompanied by a dense fibrinous anterior chamber reaction. An aqueous tap was performed, and the patient was treated with topical, systemic, and intracameral antifungal and antibiotic agents. The infection was resistant to medical therapy and the course further complicated by secondary pupillary block glaucoma.

We reviewed retrospectively the charts of 36 patients (72 eyes) with Behçet's disease. The visual acuities in 21 patients receiving colchicine (group A) gradually decreased with time. The visual acuities in 9 patients receiving colchicine and systemic corticosteroid (group B) gradually decreased after the onset of the disease and were significantly worse than those in group A 10 and 15 years after onset. The visual acuities in 6 patients receiving colchicine and cyclosporin (group C) gradually decreased, and their visual acuity scores were similar to those in group A.

PURPOSE: To report a unique case of metastatic paraganglioma presenting as a junctional scotoma.
OBSERVATIONS: A 38-year-old Caucasian man with a history of abdominal paraganglioma presented with minimally blurred vision 20/25 visual acuity in the left eye. The patient was found to have a junctional scotoma upon visual field testing. Cranial MRI revealed a large peri-clival mass compressing the pre-chiasmal optic nerves and other loci of metastatic disease. Intracranial masses, including metastases, can present with a relatively intact central acuity and nonspecific visual symptoms.
