Prediction error processing and sharpening of expected information across the face-processing hierarchy.

The perception and neural processing of sensory information are strongly influenced by prior expectations. The integration of prior and sensory information can manifest through distinct underlying mechanisms: focusing on unexpected input, denoted as prediction error (PE) processing, or amplifying anticipated information via sharpened representation. In this study, we employed computational modeling using deep neural networks combined with representational similarity analyses of fMRI data to investigate these two processes during face perception. Participants were cued to see face images, some

Retinotopy within rat primary visual cortex using optical imaging.

The purpose of this study was to determine the retinotopic organization of rat primary visual cortex (area 17) using optical imaging technology. Stimulating discrete regions of visual space resulted in localised changes in the remitted light during optical imaging of visual cortex in rat. From these localised changes, our results confirm previous electrophysiological studies on the location, size and organization of rat primary visual cortex. Small differences in the cortical magnification factor (CMF) were found between visual field areas with the highest CMF confined to the upper nasal regio

Perceptual interference supports a non-modular account of face processing.

The perception of faces and of nonface objects share common early visual processing stages. Some argue, however, that the brain eventually processes faces separately from other objects, within a domain-specific module dedicated to face perception. This apparent specialization for faces could, alternatively, result from people's expertise with this category of stimuli. Here we used behavioral and electrophysiological measures of interference to address the functional independence of face and object processing. If the expert processing of faces and cars depend on common mechanisms related to hol

Sensory and non-sensory visual disorders in man and monkey.

The posterior third of the cerebral cortex in monkeys consists of a patchwork of visual areas in each of which there is a 'map' of the retina. The details of the 'map' vary considerably from one area to another and one notable variation concerns the optimal visual feature to which the cells respond. Orientation, disparity, colour and movement are emphasized in separate areas that appear to be concerned with sensory analysis. Their existence and the possibility that brain damage is occasionally restricted chiefly to one such area may explain the rare highly selective visual sensory impairments

The impact of rhotic allophony on spoken-word recognition during sound change.

Maltese, a Semitic language spoken on the Mediterranean island of Malta, is experiencing a rhotic sound change from an alveolar trill to an alveolar approximant. In word onset position, approximants and trills appear with a similar frequency, which enables the investigation of allophonic effects in the absence of a frequency bias. Given claims that the trill is the most prototypical exemplar of the rhotic category (e.g., Ladefoged & Maddieson, 1996), we hypothesized that the trills lead to faster word recognition. This was tested in two visual-world eye-tracking experiments. The first experime

Sublexical semantic decoding during incidental novel word learning in natural Chinese reading.

The majority of Chinese characters convey meaning explicitly via their semantic radical and studies investigating isolated character identification and character acquisition have shown them to be an important source of sublexical semantic information. However, to date, it is unclear whether Chinese readers recruit and utilize semantic cues from radicals when encountering, learning and representing entirely novel characters in natural reading - an important aspect of vocabulary growth. To address this question, we created sixteen semantic-phonetic compound single pseudo-character words as novel

Pre-stimulus pupil-linked arousal enhances initial stimulus availability and accelerates decay in iconic memory.

Pupil diameter reflects not only reflexive responses to light but also spontaneous fluctuations in arousal. Such pre-stimulus fluctuations may shape visual performance, yet it remains unclear whether they only affect perceptual sensitivity or decision processes in near-threshold tasks, or instead influence the temporal availability of sensory information even for highly visible stimuli. We tested whether pupil-linked arousal modulates iconic memory, a high-capacity but short-lived visual store bridging sensory encoding and short-term memory. Based on a model in which a brief stimulus evokes an

Decision-level processes in rapid numerosity estimation.

How do people rapidly judge numerosity-the number of objects in a scene? Theories of human numerical judgements are constrained by the behavioural patterns emerging when people estimate numerosity, such as exact enumeration of small sets, underestimation of large sets, and scalar variability. Current computational models capture how properties of stimulus representations can lead to characteristic behavioural patterns under rapid viewing conditions. Here, we examined which decision-level processes people engage during such tasks, and whether these processes contribute to behavioural patterns.

Better performance when recalling speed from object motion compared to texture motion.

Our daily visual environment abounds with motion. Accurately perceiving object speed is essential when avoiding collisions or intercepting moving objects. Accurately remembering object speed is equally essential, as moving objects may become temporarily occluded. Most studies of speed use texture motion stimuli (e.g., dot motion), which minimize spatial cues but do not reflect the natural spatiotemporal dynamics of moving objects. In contrast, object motion contains rich spatial cues that better capture real-world motion. Neural mechanisms underlying texture and object motion processing differ

Temporal tuning of continuous flash suppression for 3D objects reflects intrinsic dynamics of visual awareness.

Understanding how visual information gains access to conscious awareness is a central issue in cognitive neuroscience. Continuous Flash Suppression (CFS) provides a powerful method to investigate this transition by reliably suppressing visual stimuli from awareness. Previous work by Zhu, Drewes, and Melcher (2016) showed that mask frequency influences suppression strength of 2D stimuli, with a peak at 6 Hz. However, whether these findings generalize to more ecologically valid 3D stimuli, and whether CFS strength depends on the eye viewing the stimulus, remains unknown. In this study, we presen

Repeated exposure to an object makes its memory representations larger.

Repeated exposure to an object is a common experience in everyday life and behavioral experiments. This study examined whether the memory representations of an object changed after repeated exposure and how such changes could later affect the recall of how many times the object occurred (i.e., frequency). Participants recalled the size of colored dots from short-term memory, and Experiment 1 found that the recalled sizes increased after repeated exposure. Experiments 2a-c found that the increase dissipated with variations in the dots' presentations (i.e., variable positions and backgrounds) an

Different Subregions of Monkey Lateral Prefrontal Cortex Respond to Abstract Sequences and Their Components.

Sequential information permeates daily activities, such as when watching for the correct series of buildings to determine when to get off the bus or train. These sequences include periodicity (the spacing of the buildings), the identity of the stimuli (the kind of house), and higher-order more abstract rules that may not depend on the exact stimulus (e.g., house, house, house, business). Previously, we found that the posterior fundus of area 46 in the monkey lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) responds to rule changes in such abstract visual sequences. However, it is unknown if this region respon

Contralateral Biases in Category-selective Areas Are Stronger in the Left Hemisphere than the Right Hemisphere.

Contralateral bias is a well-known feature of early visual cortex, but how it varies across higher-level, category-selective visual cortex and how much that bias differs between preferred and nonpreferred is unclear. Here, we examined 12 category-selective regions across 4 experiments using peripherally presented faces, bodies, houses, and scenes, to measure the difference in contralateral bias between preferred and nonpreferred stimuli. The results showed a substantial range of contralateral biases across the category-selective regions, similar to prior studies using category-selective stimul

Dissociable Cognitive Systems for Recognizing Places and Navigating through Them: Developmental and Neuropsychological Evidence.

Recent neural evidence suggests that the human brain contains dissociable systems for "scene categorization" (i.e., recognizing a place as a particular kind of place, for example, a kitchen), including the parahippocampal place area, and "visually guided navigation" (e.g., finding our way through a kitchen, not running into the kitchen walls or banging into the kitchen table), including the occipital place area. However, converging behavioral data - for instance, whether scene categorization and visually guided navigation abilities develop along different timelines and whether there is differe

Unsupervised deep learning identifies semantic disentanglement in single inferotemporal face patch neurons.

In order to better understand how the brain perceives faces, it is important to know what objective drives learning in the ventral visual stream. To answer this question, we model neural responses to faces in the macaque inferotemporal (IT) cortex with a deep self-supervised generative model, β-VAE, which disentangles sensory data into interpretable latent factors, such as gender or age. Our results demonstrate a strong correspondence between the generative factors discovered by β-VAE and those coded by single IT neurons, beyond that found for the baselines, including the handcrafted state-of-

Priming with skin-problems increases fear of clusters.

Trypophobia is induced by viewing multiple clustered objects. To date, several studies have investigated why certain people experience discomfort when looking at clustered patterns. Recently, "involuntary protection against dermatosis" (IPAD) hypothesis was proposed to explain the causes of trypophobia. The IPAD hypothesis suggests that involuntary aversive responses to skin diseases cause discomfort in response to image clusters. However, this idea has not been fully investigated empirically. Therefore, the present study used a modified version of the priming procedure and tested whether the

Selective impairment of On-reading (Chinese-style pronunciation) in alexia with agraphia for kanji due to subcortical hemorrhage in the left posterior middle temporal gyrus.

We report a patient with alexia with agraphia for kanji after hemorrhage in the left posterior middle temporal gyrus. The results of single-character kanji reading and two-character on- (Chinese-style pronunciation), kun- (native Japanese pronunciation), and Jukujikun (irregular kun-) reading word tests revealed that the patient could not read kanji characters with on-reading but read the characters with kun-reading. We consider that this on-reading alexia was caused by disconnection between the posterior inferior temporal cortex (orthographic lexicon) and the posterior superior temporal gyrus

Pure alexia with intact perception of complex visual stimuli: a case study.

After a stroke involving the left occipitotemporal cortex our patient shows a word-length effect and has problems to identify letters or numbers in strings of symbols. But he is normal in identifying isolated letters and in non-verbally categorizing even complex images such as faces or natural scenes. His cortical lesion is stretching from the visual word form area (VWFA) anteriorly causing additional problems to name visual stimuli and to match acoustic stimuli with images. We conclude that our patient suffers from pure alexia without deficits to identify even complex visual stimuli. Our resu

Cerebellar function in children with and without dyslexia during single word processing.

The cerebellar deficit hypothesis of dyslexia posits that dysfunction of the cerebellum is the underlying cause for reading difficulties observed in this common learning disability. The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a single word processing task to test for differences in activity and connectivity in children with (n = 23) and without (n = 23) dyslexia. We found cerebellar activity in the control group when word processing was compared to fixation, but not when it was compared to the active baseline task designed to reveal activity specific to reading.
