The impact of a gender transformative school-based suicide prevention workshop in Australia: adolescent boys' perspectives.

Elevated suicide rates among adolescent boys in Australia reflect a critical need to address restrictive masculine norms that hinder help-seeking. Tomorrow Man's 'Breaking the Man Code' workshop-a school-based gender transformative programme-aims to increase authentic self-expression and meaningful dialogue among adolescent boys. Evidence of the impacts of gender transformative programmes is limited. Within a cluster randomized trial, 183 boys (Years 10 upwards) from 11 Australian schools completed open-ended survey questions about their experiences of the 'Breaking the Man Code' workshop and

The role of peer support in coping and adjustment to dialysis and transplantation: Study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: People with kidney failure receiving dialysis or kidney transplantation find it difficult to adapt to treatment related routines and restrictions, and feel frustrated when their expectations aren't matched by their lived experience. Health professionals provide information to help people prepare for kidney treatments, but it may be that 'peer supporters' - people who live with kidney disease - can provide more easily understood and relevant information. This study will explore how learning from peer supporters might improve the experience of treatment, after dialysis initiation a

The detrimental effect of combined risks on mind-wandering: A response surface analysis of childhood family abuse and peer bullying.

BACKGROUND: Childhood family abuse and peer bullying are key risk factors for adolescent mind-wandering, yet their interactive effects on the risk surface and gender differences have not been fully explored. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to examine the variation in adolescent mind-wandering under different combinations of family abuse and peer bullying by constructing a three-dimensional surface of dual-risk through response surface analysis. It further investigates gender-specific differences in relation to risk consistency and nonlinear responses. METHODS: A survey was conducted with 2047 ado

All My Friends Are Doing It: Perceived Social Norms Predict Heavier Sports Betting Behavior Among Young Adults.

Sports betting is the fastest growing gambling behavior in the United States, particularly among young adults. Despite burgeoning evidence of the public health concerns associated with sports betting, antecedents of this addictive behavior are largely understudied. Informed by seminal psychological theories of conformity and existing norms-based prevention paradigms for high-risk behavior, the current study aimed to quantitatively examine perceived social norms as a potential explanatory factor for sports betting behavior. The sample was comprised of 221 young adults from 36 different U.S. sta

Codeveloping a community-based, peer-led psychosocial support intervention to reduce stigma and depression among people with tuberculosis and their households in Indonesia: a mixed-methods participatory action study.

Evidence relating to peer support and community-based psychological and social (psychosocial) interventions to reduce stigma and depression among people with tuberculosis (TB) and their households is limited. This study aimed to engage with multisectoral stakeholders in Indonesia to co-develop a peer-led, community-based psychosocial intervention that is replicable, acceptable, and sustainable. We used a participatory action design and engaged key national, multisectoral stakeholders to ensure that the intervention co-design was relevant and appropriate to the TB health system and the sociocul

Navigating transitions into, through, and beyond peer worker roles: insider insights from the Supporting Harm Reduction through Peer Support (SHARPS) study.

BACKGROUND: Peer workers are individuals who draw on their personal experiences in a professional capacity to support clients. Existing research on the role of peer workers in mental health, homelessness, and substance use services has primarily focused on their impact on client outcomes. This paper describes the development of peer workers as they transition into, through, and beyond this role. Utilising data from the Supporting Harm Reduction through Peer Support (SHARPS) study, where Peer Navigators supported people experiencing homelessness and substance use challenges, this paper explores

Young adult peer crowds, e-cigarette advertising exposure, and e-cigarette use: Test of a mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Young people often make lifestyle choices or engage in behaviors, including tobacco product use, based on the norms of peer crowds they affiliate with. Peer crowds are defined as reputation-based peer groups centered around lifestyle norms (e.g., Hipster, Surfer, Hip Hop). This study examined the effects of peer crowd affiliation on e-cigarette use via increased exposure to e-cigarette advertising and increased social network e-cigarette use. METHOD: Data were collected from 1398 ethnically diverse young adults (Mean age = 22.3; SD = 3.2; 62% women) in six-month intervals over one…

Pathways from adolescent close friendship struggles to adult negative affectivity.

This 19-year prospective study applied a social development lens to the challenge of identifying long-term predictors of adult negative affectivity. A diverse community sample of 169 individuals was repeatedly assessed from age 13 to age 32 using self-, parent-, and peer-reports. As hypothesized, lack of competence establishing and maintaining close friendships in adolescence had a substantial long-term predictive relation to negative affectivity at ages 27-32, even after accounting for prior depressive, anxious, and externalizing symptoms. Predictions also remained robust after accounting for

The effect of a peer's teen pregnancy on sexual behavior.

We examine whether a friend or older sibling's teen pregnancy impacts one's own sexual behavior. Employing an event study design and rich retrospective data on sexual activity, we find that those who observe a peer's teen pregnancy change sexual behavior after the pregnancy ends to put themselves at lower risk of their own teen pregnancy; specifically, they are less likely to have unprotected sex and have fewer sexual partners in the year following the end of the teen pregnancy. We find that females are more likely to change their sexual behavior compared to males, and the effects are primaril

A realist change model for community-based perinatal mental health peer support from peer volunteers.

AIMS: To investigate what it is about community-based perinatal mental health peer support from trained volunteers that works, for whom, in what circumstances, in what respects, and why; and build a change model that includes positive and negative mechanisms and outcomes. METHODS: Realist evaluation methods based on semi-structured interviews were used to create a change model for a third sector programme in England. RESULTS: Mothers who received peer support (n = 20), peer support volunteers (n = 27), and programme staff (n = 9) were interviewed. Positive impact on mothers was primarily bas

Concurrent and longitudinal associations of developmental language disorder with peer victimization in adolescence: evidence from a co-twin study.

BACKGROUND: Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) experience higher levels of peer victimization than their peers. However, it is not known if such associations reflect genetic and environmental confounding. We used a co-twin control design to investigate the association of language difficulties (DLD and separately poor pragmatic language) with peer victimization and compare the developmental trajectories of peer victimization across adolescence for those with and without language difficulties. METHODS: Participants were 3,400 pairs of twins in the Twins Early Development Study

A novel intervention for acute stress reaction: exploring the feasibility of ReSTART among Norwegian soldiers.

Background: Soldiers in combat may experience acute stress reactions (ASRs) in response to trauma. This can disrupt function, increasing both immediate physical danger and the risk for post-trauma mental health sequelae. There are few reported strategies for managing ASRs; however, recent studies suggest a novel peer-based intervention as a promising approach. Objectives: This study assesses the feasibility of ReSTART training, a peer-based course designed to prepare soldiers to manage ASRs. ReSTART builds on programmes established by US and Israeli militaries. The current study evaluates the R

Interpersonal Factors, Peer Relationship Stressors, and Gender Differences in Adolescent Depression.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Compared to boys, girls value close relationships more. Thus, heightened affiliative proclivities may serve as a particularly salient psychosocial risk factor for depression in adolescent girls. The purpose of this review is to examine whether the preponderance of depression in girls is because of gender differences in interpersonal vulnerabilities and peer relationship stressors and/or in the associations between these factors and depression. RECENT FINDINGS: Girls (vs. boys) exhibit higher levels of co-rumination and affective empathy, but not excessive reassurance-seekin

Enriching qualitative alcohol and other drug research by engaging lived experience peer researchers in a dual-interview approach: A case study.

INTRODUCTION: Engaging people with lived experience of alcohol and other drug use as peer researchers in qualitative research is becoming more common. However, there are differing opinions on how to best engage and support peer researchers. CASE PRESENTATION: Through this case study the researchers aimed to illustrate the potential benefits of a peer/academic researcher dual-interview approach as a qualitative method in research. In the study, a peer researcher who had lived experience of alcohol and other drug use collaborated with an academic researcher who had qualitative expertise. Semi-s

A developmental cascade model of adolescent peer relationships, substance use, and psychopathological symptoms from child maltreatment.

INTRODUCTION: Although previous studies have demonstrated high intercorrelations among deviant peer affiliation, substance use, externalizing and internalizing symptoms in adolescence, these studies have been limited because they did not examine 1) the associations over time by assuming one particular sequence; and 2) child maltreatment effects. METHODS: This study included 617 adolescents (54.3 % girls, 55.6 % Black) at-risk of maltreatment living in the U.S and primarily low-income. Deviant peer affiliation was assessed at ages 12, 14, and 16 using 13 items from the modified version of the

Delivering Peer-Based Support in Prisons During the COVID Pandemic and Lockdown: Innovative Activities Delivered by People Who Care.

During COVID and lockdown, many prisoners have not only been affected by infection transmission in crowded and ill-equipped institutions, they have also been separated from a range of supports, including loss of family and professional supports and support for prisoners with addiction and/or mental health problems has been disrupted. This paper reports on evidence of how peer-based recovery organizations have attempted to mitigate these adverse effects, based on a case study of one prison in the North-West of England, using a range of routine reporting data and original research data. Prosocial and Aggressive Behavior: A Longitudinal Study.

Developmental theorists have made strong claims about the fundamental prosocial or aggressive nature of the human infant. However, only rarely have prosocial behavior and aggression been studied together in the same sample. We charted the parallel development of both behaviors from infancy to childhood in a British community sample, using a two-construct, multimethod longitudinal design. Data were drawn from the Cardiff Child Development Study (CCDS), a prospective longitudinal study of a volunteer sample of parents and their firstborn children. A sample of 332 mothers was recruited from Natio

Psychological Distress amid Change: Role Disruption in Girls during the Adolescent Transition.

The present study investigates the underlying cognitive, social, and behavioral tendencies that may explain why some girls are more likely to perceive the adolescent transition as disrupting and difficult, otherwise characterized as role disruption. It was hypothesized that individual differences in rumination, rejection sensitivity, peer problems, and pubertal status would contribute to why some girls perceived more role disruption during the transition from childhood to adolescence, and that girls who reported more role disruption would be at increased risk for subsequent depression. Early pubertal maturation and externalizing behaviors: Examination of peer delinquency as mediator and cognitive flexibility as a moderator.

INTRODUCTION: While peer delinquency is a known mediator between early pubertal timing and externalizing behaviors, little is known about factors that could protect against the adverse influence of peer delinquency. This study assesses the possible moderating role of cognitive flexibility, which is one index of executive functioning that facilitates flexible and adaptive responses to challenging situations. We assessed the interactive influence of peer delinquency and cognitive flexibility in the association between pubertal maturation and externalizing behaviors in boys and girls. METHOD: Pa
