A multi-task generative model for simultaneous post-contrast MR image synthesis and brainstem glioma segmentation.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to generate post-contrast MR images reducing the exposure of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) for brainstem glioma (BSG) detection, simultaneously delineating the BSG lesion, and providing high-resolution contrast information. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 30 patients diagnosed with brainstem glioma was included. Multi-contrast images, including pre-contrast T1 weighted (pre-T1w), T2 weighted (T2w), arterial spin labeling (ASL) and post-contrast T1w images, were collected. A multi-task generative model was developed to synthesize post-contrast T1w imag

Effects of early childhood otitis media-related conductive hearing loss on speech perception, neural processing, and working memory.

Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a common childhood ear disease that can cause temporary conductive hearing loss during a critical period of auditory development. This condition is hypothesized to be related to deficits in neural, perceptual, and cognitive abilities. This study examined the relation between conductive hearing loss due to OME in early childhood and its effects on neural and perceptual speech processing, as well as working memory (WM) function in early school-aged children. A total of 21 children aged 6-8 years with normal hearing who had a history of OME in early childhood w

Comparing sound localization and speech-in-noise in unilateral, bilateral, single-sided deaf, and bimodal cochlear implant users.

Cochlear implant users do not experience spatial hearing with the same accuracy or acuity as typical hearing listeners. Two standard measures of spatial hearing are sound localization error and speech reception thresholds (SRTs) in spatially separated noise. While sound localization requires a complicated setup, SRTs may be measured with fewer loudspeakers and less testing time. If a predictive relationship between sound localization error and SRTs can be measured, then the spatial hearing abilities of cochlear implant users may be quickly assessed by measuring one task or the other. To test t

Alpha9alpha10 knockout mice show altered physiological and behavioral responses to signals in masking noise.

Medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferents modulate outer hair cell motility through specialized nicotinic acetylcholine receptors to support encoding of signals in noise. Transgenic mice lacking the alpha9 subunits of these receptors (α9KOs) have normal hearing in quiet and noise, but lack classic cochlear suppression effects and show abnormal temporal, spectral, and spatial processing. Mice deficient for both the alpha9 and alpha10 receptor subunits (α9α10KOs) may exhibit more severe MOC-related phenotypes. Like α9KOs, α9α10KOs have normal auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds and weak MOC

Evidence that hidden hearing loss underlies amplitude modulation encoding deficits in individuals with and without tinnitus.

Damage to auditory nerve fibers that expresses with suprathreshold sounds but is hidden from the audiogram has been proposed to underlie deficits in temporal coding ability observed among individuals with otherwise normal hearing, and to be present in individuals experiencing chronic tinnitus with clinically normal audiograms. We tested whether these individuals may have hidden synaptic losses on auditory nerve fibers with low spontaneous rates of firing (low-SR fibers) that are important for coding suprathreshold sounds in noise while high-SR fibers determining threshold responses in quiet re

The pupil response reveals increased listening effort when it is difficult to focus attention.

Recent studies have shown that prior knowledge about where, when, and who is going to talk improves speech intelligibility. How related attentional processes affect cognitive processing load has not been investigated yet. In the current study, three experiments investigated how the pupil dilation response is affected by prior knowledge of target speech location, target speech onset, and who is going to talk. A total of 56 young adults with normal hearing participated. They had to reproduce a target sentence presented to one ear while ignoring a distracting sentence simultaneously presented to

Attentional effects of gaze shifts are influenced by emotion and spatial frequency, but not in autism.

OBJECTIVE: Impaired gaze following is an important hallmark of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) in clinical settings. Yet, ASD subjects perform normally on laboratory tasks involving gaze shifts. We investigated this contradiction, hypothesizing that impaired gaze following in ASDs is not related to basic impairments in attention orienting but to impaired emotion perception and abnormal processing of spatial frequencies (i.e., local and global information). METHOD: We tested 30 high-functioning, school-age children with ASDs and 30 age- and IQ-matched controls on a task involving gaze shifts

Specific AD impairment in concurrent performance of two memory tasks.

The current study examined the hypothesis that patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) have a selective deficit in the coordination mechanism of the central executive, which is reflected in their inability to coordinate the performance of two tasks concurrently. One criticism of the previous studies in the literature is that they employ tasks that do not necessarily draw upon the separate peripheral mechanisms within working memory but combine a memory load with a perceptuomotor load. Therefore, the aim of the study was to examine the effects of AD and healthy adult ageing on a verbal memory pl

Feeling Good, Hearing Wrong? Mood-Condition Differences in False Hearing and Metacognitive Evaluation in Speech-in-Noise Perception.

PURPOSE: False hearing occurs when listeners report perceiving a contextually appropriate word that differs from the one actually presented. This study examined whether false hearing and listeners' metacognitive sensitivity differed between positive- and negative-mood conditions. METHOD: Seventy-eight female adults with normal hearing were assigned to either a positive- or negative-mood induction condition. All participants listened to 162 sentences with noise-masked final words: 40 semantically congruent targets (e.g., camera), 82 phonological lures (e.g., camel), and 40 semantically unrelat

Stealthy watermarking for medical AI models via spatial patch trigger and two-stage training.

Deep learning models for medical image analysis require substantial computational resources, domain expertise, and curated datasets, making them valuable intellectual property. Protecting the ownership of such models is critical, yet existing watermarking techniques often compromise diagnostic accuracy or introduce visible artifacts that are unacceptable in clinical settings. In this paper, we propose a stealthy watermarking framework specifically designed for medical AI models. Our approach utilizes a spatial patch trigger mechanism that mimics natural imaging phenomena commonly observed in d

In-vehicle low-light face image enhancement with physical-semantic constrained diffusion and gated selective state-space scanning.

Driver fatigue monitoring in intelligent cockpits faces unique challenges in nighttime scenarios: the coexistence of extreme non-uniform illumination and high-intensity sensor noise. Existing algorithms hit bottlenecks: discriminative models, limited by regression-to-the-mean effects, over-smooth high-frequency features like eyelids and pupils; meanwhile, probabilistic generative models, lacking structural constraints, generate spurious ocular structures (semantic hallucinations), misleading downstream tasks. To address this, we propose STDN-MD, a physical-semantic synergistic restoration fram

Limonene Modulates Event-Related Potentials in a 2-Back Working Memory Task.

INTRODUCTION: Olfactory inputs can influence visual cognition. However, it remains unclear whether such effects are driven by the chemical properties of odorants or by mood-related associations, especially under conditions of high cognitive demand. This study examined whether limonene, a key citrus odorous compound, modulates cognitive processing during a visual 2-back task under different levels of perceptual load. METHODS: We developed a 2-back working memory task using color lightness discrimination. The task included both low-load (orange) and high-load (gray) conditions. Participants wor

Remote Matrix Sentence Test on Uncalibrated Consumer Devices: Test-Retest Reliability and Laboratory Agreement in Normal Hearing.

This study investigates the impact of uncalibrated consumer hardware on the outcomes of the German Matrix Sentence Test (GMST) in a remote setting. Speech-in-noise tests like the MST are relevant in audiology, as they better reflect everyday listening conditions compared to pure-tone audiometry. Due to their suprathreshold signal presentation and robustness against calibration offsets, they are particularly suitable for remote testing. It is unclear, however, if a sensitive and efficient test like the MST exhibits the same robustness against uncontrolled conditions in remote testing with uncal

Using auditory-visual speech to probe the basis of noise-impaired consonant-vowel perception in dyslexia and auditory neuropathy.

Both dyslexics and auditory neuropathy (AN) subjects show inferior consonant-vowel (CV) perception in noise, relative to controls. To better understand these impairments, natural acoustic speech stimuli that were masked in speech-shaped noise at various intensities were presented to dyslexic, AN, and control subjects either in isolation or accompanied by visual articulatory cues. AN subjects were expected to benefit from the pairing of visual articulatory cues and auditory CV stimuli, provided that their speech perception impairment reflects a relatively peripheral auditory disorder. A comparison of visual and auditory motion processing in human cerebral cortex.

Visual and auditory motion information can be used together to provide complementary information about the movement of objects. To investigate the neural substrates of such cross-modal integration, functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess brain activation while subjects performed separate visual and auditory motion discrimination tasks. Areas of unimodal activation included the primary and/or early sensory cortex for each modality plus additional sites extending toward parietal cortex. Areas conjointly activated by both tasks included lateral parietal cortex, lateral frontal co

Auditory processing in aging listeners.

Many aspects of auditory processing in aging listeners are poorly understood. Methodological problems encountered with the aging population, ranging from ear canal collapse to a conservative criterion, have rarely been considered in past research. The relation between pure-tone thresholds and other aspects of auditory functions is unclear. There have been few studies of frequency and temporal analysis in aging listeners. There is disagreement on the effect of age on speech discrimination abilities in various listening conditions, and the cause of speech perception problems in aging listeners h

Speech-in-noise difficulties in aminoglycoside ototoxicity reflects combined afferent and efferent dysfunction.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with Cystic fibrosis (CF) often receive aminoglycosides (AGs) to manage recurrent pulmonary infections, placing them at risk for ototoxicity. Chronic AG use can lead to complex cochlear damage affecting inner and outer hair cells, the stria vascularis, and spiral ganglion neurons. The greatest damage is typically in the basal cochlear region, which encodes high-frequency hearing, with additional involvement of more apical regions. While extended-high-frequency (EHF) hearing loss (EHFHL; 9-16 kHz) is often the earliest sign of AG ototoxicity, speech in noise (SiN) effects a

Rapid Brain Adaptation to Hearing Amplification: A Randomized Crossover Trial of Personal Sound Amplification Products.

Understanding speech in noise is a common challenge for older adults, often requiring increased listening effort that can deplete cognitive resources and impair higher-order functions. Hearing aids are the gold standard intervention for hearing loss, but cost and accessibility barriers have driven interest in alternatives such as Personal Sound Amplification Products (PSAPs). While PSAPs are not medical devices, they may help reduce listening effort in certain contexts, though supporting evidence remains limited. This study examined the short-term effects of bilateral PSAP use on listening eff
