The silent period is a misunderstood electrophysiological phenomenon leading to several different hypotheses explaining its electrogenesis. It has been studied by different authors and different methodologies giving a wide variability of results, therefore an exact pattern of its normal values does not exist. This work was undertaken to define the normal morphology and duration of the silent period obtained by supramaximal stimulus of the median nerve, during maximum isometric effort of the abductor pollicis brevis muscle against resistance, using 20 adult volunteers without neurological alter

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is a rare endocrine disorder most prevalent among individuals of Asian descent that presents as proximal muscle weakness, hypokalemia, and signs of hyperthyroidism. We present the case report of a patient with previously undiagnosed hyperthyroidism, protracted muscle weakness with transient exacerbations, and nocturnal onset of periodic paralysis affecting the upper and lower limbs.

Recovery of yeast cells after exposure to ionizing radiation was found in 1957. During the first decade, i.e. in the "premolecular period" of studying the phenomenon, its basic features were revealed: dependence on ploidy of cells, on their energy exchange, on radiation LTE, and others. A mathematical model of recovery was proposed; the damages causing death of irradiated haploid and diploid cells were shown to be double strand breaks of DNA. The concepts of universal biological importance of the cell property to repair genetic damages were formulated.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the size and position of the fetal testes during gestation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study comprised 48 testes obtained from 24 human fetuses with no congenital abnormalities, aged 14-40 weeks. The development of the fetuses was evaluated by measuring the crown-rump length. Testicular size was assessed as the height, width, thickness and weight, and the position of testes determined during fetal development.
RESULTS: The testes in 11 fetuses (22 testes) aged 14-37 weeks were in the abdominal cavity; no testis had descended to the scrotum in any fetus until 27 weeks

BACKGROUND: Hypokaliemic periodic paralysis is an uncommon complication of hyperthyroidism occurring sporadically almost exclusively in young Asian men. The clinical presentation is the same as in familial hypokaliemic periodic paralysis. Treatment consists of conventional management for thyrotoxicosis.
CASE REPORT: A Laotian man aged 42 years had suffered episodes of pain and fatigue in the lower limbs lasting 2 to 7 days over the last few months. The patient was hospitalized with severe limb pain. Clinical examination found severe motor deficit involving all four limbs. Laboratory findings

INTRODUCTION: Meningitis due to Salmonella is an unusual sign of salmonellosis. Usually Salmonella causes clinical disorders of the digestive tract, but on occasions, especially in babies, may cause focalized infections such as meningitis. Although meningitis due to Salmonella is unusual, it should be remembered because of its gravity, since it has a high morbimortality. It mainly affects neonatal babies and those under 4 months of age. It usually precedes or is accompanied by gastroenteritis and has a rapid clinical course.
CLINICAL CASE: We present the case of a neonatal baby girl, 17 days

In this paper, authors discussed the classification of swelling (Chong), swelling-treatment methods (Chi-Chong) in Choson period, traditional notions about the natural history, treatment principles, popular healing methods of swelling, and depicted specially designed acupuncture instruments applied to it. Among the six professional guide books at that time, A Secret Recipe of Swelling Treatment (16th century) introduced the invasive surgical method into the narrow disease category i.e. carbuncle and furuncle, cellulitis, erysipelae, and gravitation abscess. The writer named these diseases as '

Mounting scientific evidence documents the diverse health benefits of successful breast-feeding for infants and mothers. The trend toward earlier discharge of newborns, however, has been linked with adverse outcomes in breast-fed babies, including hypernatremic dehydration and hyperbilirubinemia. This article reviews practical strategies for promoting the successful initiation of breast-feeding, beginning with effective prenatal education and a screening breast exam to detect lactation risk factors. Supportive hospital practices are discussed, including the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative an

OBJECTIVE: To briefly describe the drug therapy administered during the perinatal period of pregnancy for common maternal and fetal complications, and to identify those agents that should not be used for these conditions.
DATA SOURCES: References were obtained from an ongoing literature search of peer-reviewed obstetric and gynecologic journals and other selected medical and pharmacy journals available in the English language. Primary search vehicle was a weekly review of the tables of contents of nearly 1,300 medical journals provided by Reference Update (Institute of Scientific Information,

Our purpose is to investigate the electrophysiological characteristics of Bell's palsy and to obtain clues for estimating prognosis in the late period by using electroneurography. Thirty-three patients were followed by electroneurography over a period of 12 months. They were classified according to House-Brackman system. At the end of the follow-up, 100% of grade II-III patients, and 61% of grade IV patients recovered completely. Thirty per cent of grade IV patients recovered as grade II, and one grade IV (8%) and one grade V (100%) patient had bad prognoses (grade IV). There were significant

Extraspinal ependymomas are a rare type of glioma that may arise in the sacrococcygeal region, presenting as a pelvic mass in an infant or child. Ependymoma presenting in the newborn period has not been described previously. Herein we describe a case of a newborn boy who presented with a perianal ependymoma, which was subsequently found to have presacral extension. The major diagnostic challenge this case presented was to rule out the alternative diagnosis of sacrococcygeal teratoma or a developmental malformation/heterotopia.

A previous study of 4 patients defined Andersen's syndrome (AS) as a triad of potassium-sensitive periodic paralysis, ventricular dysrhythmias, and dysmorphic features. AS appears to be distinct in terms of its genetic defect from the alpha-subunit of skeletal muscle sodium channel and the cardiac potassium channel responsible for most long QT syndromes (LQT1). We studied 11 additional patients with AS from 5 kindreds. Spontaneous attacks of paralysis were associated with hypokalemia, normokalemia, or hyperkalemia. All 11 patients had similar dysmorphic features. The QT interval was prolonged

Fungal pathogens have become increasingly important as causes of mortality and in newborn infants, especially preterm with very law birth weight, admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit. We report here the cases of 26 neonates (19 VLBW) with systemic fungal infections. Average birth weight and gestational age were 1405 +/- 977 g (range 595-4180 g) and 29 +/- 5 weeks (range 24-41 weeks) respectively. 24 newborn infants required endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation and 6 were affected by a severe congenital malformation. An umbilical e/o central intravascular catheter was insert

We retrospectively evaluated the characteristics of adult patients admitted with thyrotoxic hypokalaemic periodic paralysis in Hong Kong. From 1984 to 1993, 45 Chinese adult patients were admitted with acute limb weakness, plasma potassium < or = 3.5 mmol/l and thyrotoxicosis confirmed by laboratory investigations. All but one were male. Seventy-five percent of attacks occurred between 9pm and 9am. Half of the attacks occurred between July and October (49.1%), most commonly in August (20%). Mean (+/- SEM) plasma potassium on admission was 2.17 +/- 0.08 mmol/l (range 1.1-3.5). In 15 episodes (2
