Correlative roentgenography and morphology of the longitudinal epiphyseal bracket.

Detailed examination of a complete chondro-osseous specimen from a patient with duplication of the first ray of the foot revealed the involved metatarsal had a trapezoid-shaped, diaphyseal-metaphyseal osseous unit that was longitudinally bracketed along the lateral side by a functioning physis, epiphysis, and secondary (epiphyseal) ossification center. The physis extended as an arc from the medial proximal side toward and along the lateral side and then back to the medial side distally. The medial side of the diaphysis had a normal periosteum. The longitudinal epiphyseal ossification bracket w…

[Surgical treatment of the pneumosinus dilatans of the frontal sinus (author's transl)].

Two cases of pneumosinus dilatans of the frontal sinus with cosmetic deformation are reported. In both cases one big hole without any interfrontal septum has been found. In the first case no efferent ducts of the frontal sinus have been visible, the second one showed only one. Surgical treatment by incision from ear to ear, and forming of a scalp flap with opening of the frontal sinus in the upper margin of the bony bulging. This bulging was left pedicled on the periosteum and fractured in many pieces. Forming of an artificial efferent duct to the nose by an incision below the left eyebrow. Go…

I-cell disease (mucolipidosis 11). Pathological and biochemical studies of an autopsy case.

An autopsy case of I-cell disease was examined by histological, histochemical, ultrastructural and biochemical methods. Cultured fibroblasts contained numerous PAS- and oil-red O positive granules consistent with lysosomes. The beta-galactosidase activity was specifically low in liver of the patient. The fiboblast-like cells including the cardiac valves, periosteum and stromal cells of the organs were closely similar to those found in mucopolysaccharidoses histochemically as well as ultrastructurally. Lipid-like materials were observed massively in the myocardium and in the neurons of spinal g…

Repair of a perforated sinus membrane with an autogenous periosteal graft: a study in 24 patients.

We describe a technique for repairing a perforation of the sinus membrane with a periosteal graft. Of 117 patients who had augmentation of the sinus floor, the sinus membrane perforated in 24, and these were repaired with autogenous periosteal grafts. Patients were followed up daily for the first 10days and monthly for the next six months, and clinical and radiographic variables were recorded. Patients had to be free of complications such as wound dehiscence, sinus infections, exposure of the graft, local inflammation, or pain. The radiographs showed correct osseointegration of all implants. P

The Anatomy of the Aging Face: A Review.

Rejuvenative procedures of the face are increasing in numbers, and a plethora of different therapeutic options are available today. Every procedure should aim for the patient's safety first and then for natural and long-lasting results. The face is one of the most complex regions in the human body and research continuously reveals new insights into the complex interplay of the different participating structures. Bone, ligaments, muscles, fat, and skin are the key players in the layered arrangement of the face.Aging occurs in all involved facial structures but the onset and the speed of age-rel

Evaluating the success of gingivoperiosteoplasty versus secondary bone grafting in patients with unilateral clefts.

BACKGROUND: The role of gingivoperiosteoplasty in closure of the cleft alveolus remains controversial. Few studies have documented long-term results of gingivoperiosteoplasty and how it compares to secondary bone grafting. The purpose of this study was to compare gingivoperiosteoplasty with secondary bone grafting by evaluating the amount of bone produced at the alveolar cleft site in patients with unilateral clefts. This comparison should help delineate the role of gingivoperiosteoplasty in the management of patients with clefts. METHODS: Eighty-six unilateral patients past the age of perman

[Subperiosteal hematoma of the orbit: case report].

We describe a sixteen years old male patient that suffered a craniocerebral trauma and presented at the emergency room, with ocular pain, palpebral hematoma and left eye proptosis. Orbital computed tomography showed left subperiosteal orbital hematoma. A surgical drainage was performed. Subperiosteal hematoma of the orbit is a rare cause of proptosis; its early diagnosis must be made in order to avoid possible complications.

[Ossifying subperiosteal hematoma associated with neurofibromatosis type 1: a report of two cases].

Neurofibromatosis may be associated with ossifying subperiosteal hematoma resulting in lower extremity hypertrophy. We presented two girls, aged 10 and 13 years, with neurofibromatosis type 1, who exhibited increased thigh girth on the right side. Plain radiographs showed an ossifying cystic formation. Magnetic resonance scans demonstrated a fluid-fluid level. Diagnosis of ossifying subperiosteal hematoma was confirmed with a biopsy in both cases. In the older patient, radiologic studies after 1.5 years showed an increase in the wall thickness of the femoral cyst from 3 mm to 5 mm. In the othe

Surgical technique and rationale for medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction for recurrent patellar dislocation.

This article describes a medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction procedure using an artificial ligament for recurrent patellar dislocation. The MPFL has been shown biomechanically to be the primary restraint among the medial patellar stabilizers. Although various predisposing factors are involved in lateral patellar dislocation, we believe that the MPFL, as a primary restraint, should undergo primary reconstruction for patellar dislocation. The results of MPFL reconstruction using a mesh-type artificial ligament and medial retinaculum slip coverage for recurrent patellar dislocati

Revision endoscopic frontal sinusotomy with mucoperiosteal flap advancement: the frontal sinus rescue procedure.

Frontal sinusitis after middle turbinate resection occurs because of stenosis of the frontal ostium by soft tissue scarring or residual bony fragments (which are pulled to the medial orbital wall by scar contracture). Standard endoscopic techniques cannot address this problem; however, revision endoscopic frontal sinusotomy with mucoperiosteal flap advancement (the frontal sinus rescue procedure) relieves this bony stenosis and incorporates a mucosal flap that minimizes postoperative stenosis.

Periosteoplasty for soft tissue closure and augmentation in preprosthetic surgery: a surgical report.

Soft tissue closure is a critical factor in preprosthetic surgery and implant placement. In large transverse or vertical bone augmentations, there is often insufficient or very thin mucosa available. Soft tissue dehiscences and bone or implant exposure may result. Based on the application of a periosteal flap, the presented method solves this problem. The flap is prepared in the neighboring area and folded into the corresponding surgical area. It not only provides good soft tissue coverage but also results in soft tissue augmentation. Periosteoplasty has been successfully applied in over 60 pa

The osteochondral ligament: a fibrous attachment between bone and articular cartilage in Rana catesbeiana.

The anuran epiphyseal cartilage shows a lateral expansion that covers the external surface of the bone, besides other features that distinguish it from the corresponding avian and mammalian structures. The fibrous structure that attaches the lateral cartilage to the bone was characterized in this work. It was designated osteochondral ligament (OCL) and presented two main areas. There was an inner area that was closer to the periosteal bone and contained a layer of osteoblasts and elongated cells aligned to and interspersed with thin collagen fibers. The thin processes of the cells in this area

Blood supply to the maxillary sinus relevant to sinus floor elevation procedures.

The maxillary blood supply is essential for preserving the vitality of the affected maxillary region, integration of the grafting material, and wound healing such as following sinus floor elevation. Although it is well established that edentulous maxillae demonstrate a decreasing vascularity as bone resorption progresses, the vascular conditions relevant to sinus floor elevation procedures have not been investigated yet. This study deals with maxillary arteries relevant to sinus floor elevation surgery and examines the vascularization of the lateral maxilla after tooth loss. The vessels of the

Supraorbital craniotomy by fracture of the anterior orbital roof. Technical note.

The authors describe a new and rapid method to safely perform a supraorbital craniotomy. This technique can be used when tumor does not invade the orbital roof. Previous descriptions of the supraorbital craniotomy involved exposure of the frontal sinus by removing its anterior wall and using the Gigli saw to separate the orbital roof. This new approach avoids removal of the anterior sinus wall and separates the supraorbital bone flap from the calvaria by fracturing the anterior orbital roof forward. In addition, a method for harvesting a laterally based pericranium and muscle pedicle that cont
