Proposition of a transdiagnostic processual approach of emotion dysregulation based on core triggers and interpersonal styles.

Emotion dysregulation (ED) has primarily been described in patients suffering from borderline personality disorder (BPD) and is an integral part of this diagnosis, but it is also a transdiagnostic construct that can be found in several other psychiatric disorders. The strong relationships between ED and BPD may lead clinicians to underestimate ED associated to other clinical contexts. This can lead to difficulties in diagnostic and treatment orientation, especially in the context of comorbidities. In this article, after reviewing the literature on the development and functioning of emotion dys

Men with and without Alcohol Dependence: A Comparative Study of Triguna, Nonattachment, Personality and Subjective Well-Being.

CONTEXT: Indian models of personality are seldom explored in relation to alcohol dependence. Triguna is an Indian model of personality originating from the Sankhya philosophy, whereby three gunas, Sattva, Rajas and Tamas describe personality features. Additionally, the trait of Non attachment which is a concept discussed extensively in Bhagavad Gita is also studied along with Triguna. AIMS: The current study discusses these concepts and attempts to explore their relationship with personality and subjective well-being, among men with and without alcohol dependence. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A cro

The relevance of personality assessment in patients with hyperventilation symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Relatively few data are available concerning the relations between hyperventilation symptoms and general personality traits in clinical populations. A clear picture of the personality traits associated with hyperventilation symptoms could enhance early detection of those individuals who are at risk for developing hyperventilation. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of general personality in hyperventilation syndrome. METHOD: Patients (N = 364) with symptoms not explained by an organic disease and supposedly caused by hyperventilation completed the NEO Five-Factor Inv

Klinefelter's syndrome in adolescence.

Twelve boys with Klinefelter's syndrome (47,XXY) identified by sex chromatin screening at birth were examined at between ages 16 and 18 years, together with 12 controls matched for social class and birth order from the same newborn population. Physical examination, psychometric assessment, personality, and degree of psychosexual development were assessed without knowledge of the karyotype. Anthropometry showed increased leg length and decreased head circumference in the XXY boys. Gynaecomastia was present in 4 boys, and testicular volume was reduced in the majority but one boy had normal sized

The prevalence and severity of loneliness and deficits in perceived social support among who have received a 'personality disorder' diagnosis or have relevant traits: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness and struggles with unmet social needs are a common experience among people with 'personality disorder' diagnoses/traits. Given the impact of loneliness and poor perceived social support on mental health, and the importance of a sense of belonging for recovery, a systematic review examining the prevalence/severity of loneliness and deficits in perceived social support among people with 'personality disorder' diagnoses/traits is an essential step towards developing an intervention targeting the social needs of people with diagnoses/traits 'personality disorder'. Despite an

Treatment outlines for borderline, narcissistic and histrionic personality disorders. The Quality Assurance Project.

Treatment outlines for Axis I disorders were published during 1982-1985. Treatment outlines for the DSM-III personality disorders are being published. This guide to the treatment of borderline, histrionic and narcissistic disorders was developed from the literature, from the opinions of practising psychiatrists and from the experience of nominated experts. Even though the treatment of patients who suffer from these disorders is very difficult, the surveys of outcome in the literature suggest that a majority of patients improve significantly with long term psychotherapy. In the present outline

Revised Temperament and Character Inventory factors predict neuropsychiatric symptoms and aging-related cognitive decline across 25 years.

INTRODUCTION: Personality traits and neuropsychiatric symptoms such as neuroticism and depression share genetic overlap and have both been identified as risks factors for development of aging-related neurocognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study aimed to examine revised personality factors derived from the Temperament and Character Inventory, previously shown to be associated with psychiatric disorders, as predictors of neuropsychiatric, cognitive, and brain trajectories of participants from a population-based aging study. METHODS: Mixed-effect linear regression analyses wer

Development in the first years of life.

Any discussion on how we care for infants and toddlers must begin with the interests and needs of the children themselves. Therefore, this issue opens with an overview of the dramatic development that takes place during the first three years of life, which turns the dependent human newborn into a sophisticated three-year-old who walks, talks, solves problems, and manages relationships with adults and other children. This article explains the new understanding of brain development that has captured public attention in recent years, and links it to developments in infant behavior that are equall

The Experiences of and Teaching Strategies for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Foreign Language Learners: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Although foreign language (FL) educational experiences for students with disabilities including deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students, are becoming more common, there is little research available on this topic. The purpose of the present review was to identify research examining DHH students' FL learning experiences and teaching strategies used in the FL class to facilitate language learning. The search showed that few studies have explored this area, and even fewer have met quality standards. Among the existing studies, the results revealed that communication methods in FL class instruction

Chinese Pinyin: Overview, History and Use in Language Learning for Young Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in China.

The authors discuss Pinyin, a phonetic system based on the Latin alphabet, as an auxiliary pedagogical tool in literacy instruction in China. They provide a brief history of Pinyin and its educational purposes, then describe how it is used in its spoken/auditory, written, and signed forms by teachers with students who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). Classroom transcripts demonstrate how Pinyin is taught via visual and tactile/kinesthetic tools such as pictures, sign language, and the Chinese Manual Alphabet for purposes of making the phonological information visible to DHH learners. The au

Characteristics of the frequent nightmare sufferer.

Previous research has found that persons who experience frequent nightmares score highly on scales that measure psychotic symptomatology. Neurotic symptoms have also been implicated as correlates of nightmare frequency. In this study, 30 adult lifelong nightmare sufferers were compared with 30 control subjects, matched for age, sex, and socioeconomic status. Subjects were asked to record all dreams for 1 month and to complete the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). Nightmare subjects scored significantly higher on the EPQ Neurotic

The concept of dependence.

The concept of dependence is reviewed in Western and Asian contexts. Asians find it acceptable and necessary, whereas Westerners may adopt an ambivalent attitude or reject the issue. Homeostatic dependence or reliance upon social and physicochemical environment is vital for human development and adaptation. Dependence as a phenomenon can be an interactional state, a trait, a role, and an initiator of mental mechanisms. Imbalanced processes result in pathological dependencies or disorders. An understanding of aspects of dependence has therapeutic implications in the assessment of the patient an

[Early risk factors in schizoid, neurotic and healthy probands].

The following results were obtained on comparing the genesis of schizoid, neurotic and healthy subjects: 1. The schizoid patients examined by us had experienced a greater total risk-associated stress during childhood and adolescence than the comparative groups. 2. Special risk-associated stress is due to: a) a stress-burdened family atmosphere (laden with conflicts within the family and burdened with diseases), b) stress originating from the mother (risks of old age and diseases), c) stress originating from siblings (large number of siblings, smaller age intervals, etc.), d) stress originating

[The pre-morbid personality of schizophrenics in the literature of the last hundred years (author's transl)].

A survey of the literature on the primary personality of schizophrenics shows that the essential concepts derive from Kraepelin (1893), E. Bleuler (who also introduced the technical term "schizoid", 1911) and C.G. Jung introversion; 1913). E Kretschmer (1921) adopted these preliminary findings and integrated them into his system of "Constitution" which greatly stimulated research in this field. Most of the following investigations confirmed his hypotheses on the basis of clinical impressions. A few only criticised his teaching, particularly as a theoretical concept. Defense mechanisms and personality in depression.

There is a longstanding belief that personality represents a structure that is stable over time, and changes, if at all, very slowly. Nonetheless, clinical and empirical evidence suggests that in patients with some Axis I disorders, the rate of personality disorders using DSM criteria decreases after treatment, suggesting that personality as assessed by phenomenological systems is state-dependent. An alternative to the DSM phenomenological system of conceptualizing personality is the dynamic concept of character, that is, a predictable pattern of both adaptive and pathological defense mechanis

Personality functioning, positive outlook for the future, and simple and complex post-traumatic stress disorder.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and its complex form (C-PTSD) are psychopathological conditions that are related to several personality traits. In particular, the current study aims to investigate the associations of impairment of personality functioning (IPF) and positive outlook for the future (POF) with PTSD and C-PTSD. A sample of 304 Brazilian adults responded to an online survey. IPF was measured according to the alternative model for personality disorders, POF was operationalized using optimism and hope scales, and PTSD and C-PTSD were measured using the ICD-11 model. Data analysis
