[Personality of schizophrenic and schizoaffective patients].

At time of discharge 33 patients with ICD-9 schizophrenia and 16 patients with ICD-9 schizoaffective psychosis were assessed by the Freiburg Personality Inventory (FPI). Psychological profiles were analyzed individually and compared to controls. In addition, a hierarchical cluster analysis was carried out. Psychopathological findings at time of discharge were documented by the AMDP system. Impact of psychopathology on response behavior in the FPI was not evident. There were but few schizophrenic or schizoaffective patients without any abnormal FPI score. For the schizophrenics abnormal (high a

[Suicidal behavior in children--a descriptive study].

INTRODUCTION: Psychiatric illness and suicide attempts are important risk factors for suicide in young people. To what extent suicidal behaviour in childhood predicts suicidal behaviour and suicide later in life is not known, and studies concerning suicidal behaviour and psychopathology in children are limited. The objective of the study was to describe suicidal behaviour in children referred to child psychiatric assessment concerning the frequency and characteristics of the suicidal behaviour and the psychiatric diagnoses of the children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Children under the age of 15 fr

Acute and long-term mental and physical sequelae in the aftermath of traumatic exposure - some remarks on "the body keeps the score".

Traumata, by definition, refer to exterior events that expose a person to experiences of overwhelming threat and catastrophe and elicit feelings of death anxiety, panic, horror, helplessness, loss of personal control, and intractability. Most affected persons respond with at least some distressing symptoms of trauma-related memory intrusions, autonomic hyperarousal, dissociation, and depression in the acute aftermath. Fortunately, the majority of traumatized individuals succeed in coping with this major stress quite well during the following weeks and months unless the process of recovery is h

Likelihood and predictors of detention in patients with personality disorder compared with other mental disorders: A retrospective, quantitative study of Mental Health Act assessments.

BACKGROUND: The UK guidelines on the treatment of personality disorder recommend avoiding compulsory treatment except in extreme situations. Little is known about how often patients with personality disorder are detained or how this compares with the treatment of other mental disorders. OBJECTIVES: Our aim is to test the hypothesis that people with personality disorder are infrequently detained under the Mental Health Act (MHA) and that risk factors associated with detention are the same as those for people with other mental disorders. METHOD: We used a retrospective, quantitative study of M

Personality patterns and outcome in depressive and bipolar disorders.

Personality traits and disorders have a strong influence on the course and outcome of depressive and bipolar disorders. Studies of the influence of personality disorders (PD) and some PD clusters on outcome of mood disorders are controversial and suggest that more specific assessment of underlying traits or dimensions is needed. Utilizing the Munich Personality test (MP-T) scales of von Zerssen, this study tries to identify specific personality traits that may influence the outcome and clinical course of unipolar endogenous depression and bipolar disorder. Six unipolar depressives and 6 bipola

Cannabis Use, Cannabis Use Disorder, and Comorbid Psychiatric Illness: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: The landscape of attitudes, legal status and patterns of use of cannabis is rapidly changing in the United States and elsewhere. Therefore, the primary aim of this narrative review is to provide a concise overview of the literature on the comorbidity of cannabis use and cannabis use disorder (CUD) with other substance use and psychiatric disorders, and to use this information to accurately guide future directions for the field. METHODS: A literature review of PubMed was conducted for studies relating to cannabis use, CUD, and a co-occurring psychiatric disorder. To provide an over

Quality of life in a community sample of young cocaine and/or heroin users: the role of mental disorders.

PURPOSE: Drug addiction and psychiatric disorders are frequently concomitant; however, few studies have investigated the impact of psychiatric disorders other than substance use disorder (SUD) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in drug users not in treatment. We studied the association of psychiatric disorders other than SUD with HRQoL in a street-recruited sample of cocaine and/or heroin users. METHODS: It is a cross-sectional study involving 287 young users of cocaine and/or heroin in Barcelona, Spain. HRQoL was assessed with the Nottingham health profile (NHP). Patterns of drug use

Narcolepsy: preliminary retrospective study of psychiatric and psychosocial aspects.

A review of the charts of 24 ambulatory male veterans with narcolepsy or narcolepsy/cataplexy showed an impressive number of psychiatric and psychosocial difficulties in these patients, such as poor adjustment to the illness, high unemployability, and disturbed intrafamily relationships. Sixteen of the patients had psychiatric disorders according to DSM-III criteria, including adjustment disorder, major depressive episode, alcohol dependence, and personality disorder, but excluding any type of psychotic disorder. The study suggests that narcoleptic/cataplectic patients have more of these diffi

Covariance in the measurement of depression/anxiety and three Cluster C personality disorders (avoidant, dependent, obsessive-compulsive).

One hundred and eight-four clients referred to a research outpatient psychological clinic, and meeting the acceptance criterion of 16 or more on the BDI at screening, were diagnosed as either-depressed and/or anxious using both Present State Examination and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental State Disorders criteria. Clients were assessed for the presence of Cluster C personality disorders using the Personality Disorder Examination of Loranger et al. (1985). Twenty-two per cent made diagnosis of avoidant, dependent or obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. Significant correlat

Comorbid psychiatric disorders in late life depression.

In late life depression, common comorbid psychiatric disorders are alcohol use, anxiety, and personality disorders. Elderly depressed patients are three to four times more likely to have an alcohol use disorder compared with nondepressed elderly subjects, with a prevalence of 15%-30% in patients with late life major depression. While the presence of a comorbid alcohol use disorder may worsen the prognosis for geriatric depression, limited data suggest that successful treatment of depression combined with reducing alcohol use leads to the best possible outcomes. Most studies show that the overa

Current comorbidity of psychiatric disorders among DSM-IV major depressive disorder patients in psychiatric care in the Vantaa Depression Study.

BACKGROUND: While numerous studies have documented the high comorbidity of major depressive disorder (MDD) with individual mental disorders, no published study has reported overall current comorbidity with all Axis I and II disorders among psychiatric patients with MDD, nor systematically investigated variations in current comorbidity by sociodemographic factors, inpatient versus outpatient status, and number of lifetime depressive episodes. METHOD: Psychiatric outpatients and inpatients in Vantaa, Finland, were prospectively screened for an episode of DSM-IV MDD, and 269 patients with a new

[Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of consciousness disorders from the psychiatric viewpoint].

Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of disturbance of consciousness are often difficult, especially when occurring in the course of psychiatric diseases. Apart from discord in defining the term of consciousness it is not always easy to distinguish between qualitative and quantitative alterations of the disorders. The performance of an exact interview and a thorough clinical examination allows an estimation of the degree of dimming of consciousness as well as the possible causes. Disorder of Consciousness is often found in patients carrying out substance abuse but also in the course of other p

What We Don't Know Can Hurt: Ignorance Creation and Involuntary Commitment Data Initiatives.

In "Minding the Gap: The Absence of Pennsylvania's Involuntary Commitment Data," Gluckman et al. draw on agnotology and undone science to argue that unreported information about psychiatric commitments results in the disenfranchisement of vulnerable populations and call for better data on those affected by involuntary commitment. Their analysis assesses ignorance as an object, focusing on the qualities of granularity, scale, and intentionality to describe the negative space around absent data. We present a complementary agnotological framework centered on the passive and active processes throu
