[The most common form of dizziness in middle age: phobic postural vertigo].

Up to now, there have been only a few valid epidemiological investigations of dizziness or vertigo as key symptoms. According to an analysis of 4,214 patients examined between 1989 and 2002 in an outpatient dizziness unit, benign peripheral paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and phobic postural vertigo (PPV) constitute the two most frequent syndromes. In this study, the relative age and sex distribution of both disorders was analysed. In the age group from 20 to 50 years, PPV was comparatively the most frequent form of dizziness, with a share of 22% to 26%. When left untreated, PPV becomes c

Lobotomy in private practice.

In a follow-up of 43 private psychiatric patients referred for open bimedial prefrontal lobotomies between 1948 and 1970, patients were rated by personal interviews and review of medical records for symptom improvement and organic brain syndromes. Initial diagnoses were obsessive-compulsive neurotic (27), hypochondriacal neurotic (five), manic-deprresive (depressed) (one), and schizophrenic (ten). All had been severely impaired by illness intractable to extensive previous treatment. Thirty-five were found to be virtually free of symptoms that prompted operation, six had some improvement, and t

Phenomenology and course of psychiatric disorders associated with combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Studies indicate that chronic combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is frequently associated with other psychiatric disorders. Questions regarding the nature and interrelationships of these conditions require clarification. The purpose of this study was to address primary and secondary illness relationships by focusing on the specific phenomenology and course of illness onset of PTSD comorbidity. METHOD: In order to minimize confounding factors, only outpatients without recent substance use disorders were included. Sixty subjects who had been exposed to severe combat

Brain function and conditioning in posttraumatic stress disorder.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is commonly treated by psychotherapy, which may draw upon behavioural psychology or cognitive-behavioural psychology, thereby making use of desensitisation techniques--amongst others; hypnotherapy may also be used. Hypnotherapy and psychotherapy are also available for helping patients who suffer from symptoms associated with general stress or who show phobic symptoms, such as a fear of heights or of walking across bridges. Studies of patients with such disorders have not always linked emotional (affective) and behavioural symptoms with psychophysical factor

Predictors of Broad Dimensions of Psychopathology among Patients with Panic Disorder after Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Many patients with panic disorder meet criteria for at least one other diagnosis, most commonly other anxiety or mood disorders. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is the best empirically supported psychotherapy for panic disorder. There is now evidence indicating that cognitive-behavioral therapy for panic disorder yields positive benefits upon comorbid disorders. OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to examine the predictors of broad dimensions of psychopathology in panic disorder after cognitive-behavioral therapy. METHODS: Two hundred patients affected by panic disorder were treated

Differences in reported symptom profile between panic disorder and other DSM-III-R anxiety disorders.

Previous research has indicated that reports of panic attacks are associated with a different set of symptoms to reports of generalized anxiety. The present two studies attempted to extend these findings to specific (situational) fears. In Study 1, 55 subjects with panic disorder were compared on their symptom profile during their panic attacks to 65 subjects with other anxiety disorders [simple phobia, social phobia and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)] during response to their feared cue. The results indicated that, compared to subjects with other anxiety disorders, subjects with panic di

Nocturnal hypoxia in patients with sleep disorders: exploring its role as a mediator between neurotic personality traits and psychological symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disorders often coexist with personality and psychological issues, alongside nocturnal hypoxia. This study investigates the potential mediating role of nocturnal hypoxia between personality traits and psychological symptoms in individuals with sleep disorders. METHODS: A cohort comprising 171 participants reporting sleep disturbances was recruited from Dalian Seventh People's Hospital. Psychological symptoms were assessed using the Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R), while personality traits were evaluated using the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). Nocturnal hypoxia

Co-morbid anxiety disorders in patients with schizophrenia in a tertiary institution in South East Nigeria: prevalence and correlates.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders occur commonly in schizophrenia but are often overlooked by psychiatrists. Their presence may compound the challenges faced by these patients and may contribute to poor outcome. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of anxiety disorders among the participants with schizophrenia, and the association between this co-morbidity and disability. METHOD: A total of 367 participants were recruited from the out-patient department of Federal neuropsychiatric hospital Enugu, Nigeria. Socio-demographic questionnaire, schedules for clinical as

From childhood to adult age: 18-year longitudinal results and prediction of the course of mental disorders in the community.

OBJECTIVE: This prospective longitudinal study of a representative community sample of children and adolescents (N = 269) examined the long-term course and predictive power of psychiatric symptoms in childhood/adolescence for diagnostic outcome (ICD-10) 18 years later at adult age. METHOD: At both cross-sectional assessments, baseline (1980-1984) and the 18-year follow-up (2001-2004), psychiatric symptoms were assessed using the 'Standardized Psychiatric Interview' (Goldberg et al. in Br J Prev Soc Med 24:18-23, 1970). At follow-up, study participants were reassessed with the standardized M-C

A comprehensive group-based cognitive behavioural treatment for blood-injection-injury phobia.

OBJECTIVES: A key feature of blood-injection-injury (BII) phobia is activation of disgust responses, in addition to fear. Yet, standard treatments have largely neglected addressing disgust responses. The disorder is further complicated by fainting in 75% of sufferers. Moreover, treatments have been traditionally delivered in an individual format, which may not be as efficient as group treatment. The aim of this study was to develop a group-based programme for BII phobia, with components targeting fear, disgust, and fainting, to determine feasibility and effectiveness of such an intervention.

The title compound, {[Ni5(C2H3O2)8(OH)2]·2.60H2O} n or [Ni5(OAc)8(OH)2]·2.60H2O (OAc is the acetate anion, C2H3O2), represents a hydrated basic acetate. Its asymmetric unit comprises half of the formula unit, with one of the three unique NiII cations situated at an inversion centre. The NiII atoms are in octa-hedral coordination environments by O atoms of the acetato ligands and by the basic OH group. The different kinds of bridging modes (μ2, 2×μ3, and μ4 for the acetato ligands; μ3 for the OH group) lead to the formation of a framework structure with hydro-phobic channels extending parallel

Chlorido{[2-(dicyclo-hexyl-phosphano-yl)eth-yl]bis-[2-(dicyclo-hexyl-phosphan-yl)eth-yl]phosphane}platinum(II) chloride dichloro-methane hemisolvate tetra-hydrate.

The title compound, [PtCl(C(42)H(78)OP(4))]Cl·0.5CH(2)Cl(2)·4H(2)O, crystallizes as a contact ion-pair with two close inter-molecular C-H⋯Cl(-) contacts between CH acidic αH atoms of the phosphane ligand and the chloride anion. A chloride ligand together with three coordinating P ligand atoms create a slightly distorted square-planar coordination environment around the Pt(II) center. An inter-molecular water O-H⋯Cl(-) and water O-H⋯OP hydrogen-bond network completes the coordination around the anion. In addition, a disordered CH(2)Cl(2) solvent mol-ecule cocrystallized within a hydro-phobic ca

[Morita therapy--a Japanese method for treating neurotic anxiety syndrome].

In Japan, the traditional Morita therapy is indicated for "shinkaishitsu" personalities, i.e., patients with neurotic anxiety disorder, especially with phobic and hypochondriac symptoms. The substantial theoretical basis and therapeutic principles were taken from Zen Buddhism, such as the development of the ego in the "space" between subject and object, the unity of body and soul, the distinction of inner and outer nature, and the principles of emptiness and nothingness. The treatment consists of an initial 7-day period of strict and isolated rest in bed followed by step-by-step occupational t

Posttraumatic stress disorder and motor vehicle accidents: a multidisciplinary overview.

OBJECTIVE: Motor vehicle accidents (MVA) may result in intractable disability. This paper investigates posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a potential cause. METHOD: The literature was reviewed for recent studies on prevalence, symptom profile, and outcome of PTSD. RESULTS: PTSD is prevalent in roughly 10% of survivors of MVAs during the first year. Comorbid depression and pain are common. Medical complications, psychophysiological reactivity, and possibly litigation may slow remission. Phobic symptoms can persist for years. Mood disturbance may augment the impact of pain on daily living

Visual imagery in posttraumatic stress disorder.

Visual imagery is reported to play a central role in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This pilot investigation examined visual imagery ability in patients with varying degrees of posttraumatic stress. Eighty one survivors of motor vehicle accidents with either (a) diagnosed PTSD, (b) diagnosed Specific Phobia, or (c) no psychiatric diagnosis and low anxiety were assessed on a measure of vividness of visual imagery. Low Anxiety subjects displayed superior visual imagery compared to PTSD and Specific Phobic subjects. Incidence of flashbacks and nightmares, however, was associated with visua

Common personality features in neurotic disorder.

The personality characteristics of 77 patients seen in general practice with a Catego diagnosis of anxiety state (including phobic state) or depressive neurosis derived from the Present State Examination were compared with those in 77 normal subjects chosen at random from the list of the same general practitioner. Each patient was matched with a normal subject of the same age and sex. The personality characteristics were rated using the Personality Assessment Schedule, an interview schedule designed to elicit the premorbid personality of the subject. The neurotic patients had significantly hig

Complex examination of 311 patients with chronic gastritis allows to differentiate three clinical types of this disease. The first type is characterized by superficial mucous disorders with constant or increased secretory function and motility of the stomach. It has relapsing course with moderate decrease of patient's life quality. The abdominal pains and dyspepsia are observed only at periods of exacerbation. Anxiety-phobic and anxiety-depressive tendencies prevail in the mental status. The attitude to illness differs mainly by emotional-willed disorders. Insomnia is manifested by a slight de
