Management of Condyloma Acuminata in Pregnancy: A Review.

No clear guidelines are available for the management of pregnant women with condyloma acuminata, a human papillomavirus-associated benign neoplasm that develops in the genital tract. We performed a systematic review to gain a better understanding of the management of condyloma acuminata during pregnancy. In this review, we mainly focused on treatments. We searched PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science to identify studies on the treatment of condyloma acuminata during pregnancy. Thirty articles met the inclusion criteria. The treatment methods described in the literature were laser therapy

Photodynamic therapy of oral lichen planus.

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory and immune-mediated disease affecting the oral mucosa. OLP presents with asymptomatic, lacelike white stripes and/or symptomatic red, ulcerated mucous membranes. Eating, drinking and oral hygiene procedures may be painful resulting in reduced quality of life (QOL). The histopathological picture is a zone of cellular infiltrate, mainly CD8+ cells, in the superficial layer of the connective tissue and signs of liquefaction degeneration of the basal membrane. Conventional treatment is corticosteroids. Local and systemic side effects are common, a

Efficacy evaluation of photodynamic therapy for oral lichen planus: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a new option for oral lichen planus (OLP) management; however, there are different opinions on the efficacy of PDT for OLP. The aim of this study was to comprehensively assess the efficacy of PDT in the treatment of OLP and compare PDT with steroid therapy. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to assess the curative effect of PDT. Five electronic databases were searched, PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, Embase, and EBSCO up to 1 December, 2019. Random and fixed effects models for pooled estimates calculation were

Evidence supporting the enhanced efficacy of pentavalent antimonials with adjuvant therapy for cutaneous leishmaniasis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is one of the major neglected disease worldwide. Although many drugs have been used, the pentavalent antimonials (PA) remain as the first-line choice despite their toxicity and limited efficacy. The combination of two drugs has risen as a potential alternative to increase the cure rate while lowering the side-effects caused by pentavalent antimonials (PA). The objective of this study was to critically review and appraise the potential synergism of the adjuvant therapies of PA with other drugs/interventions previously used in the literature. We carried out a search

[Laser in prostate cancer. Applicability.].

OBJECTIVES: In recent years, there has been a rise concerning the research and development of focal prostate cancer therapies as a consequence of the high percentage of low-risk and localized prostate cancers. These focal therapies aim at preserving the gland in selected patients to avoid overtreatment. The application of lasers for focal ablation and photodynamic therapy has shown promising results in exchange for a minimal rate of adverse events compared to radical treatments. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An extensive review of the available literature on focal laser treatments for localized prost

Successful treatment with ALA-PDT of Refractory condyloma acuminatum of the whole anterior urethra.

Condyloma acuminatum is a sexually transmitted disease caused by human papillomavirus infection, which mostly occurs in the external genitalia, vulva, perianal, and the Intraurethral condyloma acuminatum is relatively rare. Treatment of urethral warts present a challenge especially if the proximal urethra is involved. Here, we report a case of intractable urethral condyloma acuminatum involving the urethral meatus and mid penile urethra with scar. This case suggested that local Photodynamic therapy in condyloma of the whole anterior urethra appears to be not only safe and effective, but also m

Cationic Porphyrins as Effective Agents in Photodynamic Inactivation of Opportunistic Plumbing Pathogen Legionella pneumophila.

Legionella pneumophila is an environmental bacterium, an opportunistic premise plumbing pathogen that causes the Legionnaires' disease. L. pneumophila presents a serious health hazard in building water systems, due to its high resistance to standard water disinfection methods. Our aim was to study the use of photodynamic inactivation (PDI) against Legionella. We investigated and compared the photobactericidal potential of five cationic dyes. We tested toluidine blue (TBO) and methylene blue (MB), and three 3-N-methylpyridylporphyrins, one tetra-cationic and two tri-cationic, one with a short (

Satisfactory response of a back carbuncle to 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) photodynamic therapy: A case report.

Carbuncle, a collection of interconnected furuncles with multiple pustular openings, is usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). In this condition, both skin and subcutaneous tissue of the lesion show severe inflammation. It often occurs in immunocompromized patients such as those with diabetes, nephritis, malnutrition, heart failure, hypogammaglobulinemia, exfoliative dermatitis, or pemphigus or those using corticosteroids for long-term. Antibiotics and aggressive debridement are the primary recommended treatments for carbuncle. We report a case of carbuncle that received satisfac

Laser treatments of active acne.

The utility of laser therapy is increasingly being recognized in the treatment of active acne vulgaris. We aimed to perform a narrative review of the medical literature on the use of laser therapy for the treatment of active acne vulgaris. We performed a PubMed literature search on September 1, 2016 using the search terms "active acne," "acne," "laser therapy," and "laser surgery." Case reports, case series, cohort, and controlled trials were included. Studies of lasers in the treatment of acne, including erbium glass, Nd:YAG, pulse dye laser (PDL), potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) laser, and

In vitro evaluation of photodynamic therapy using curcumin on Leishmania major and Leishmania braziliensis.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is an infectious disease caused by the Leishmania protozoan. The conventional treatment is long-lasting and aggressive, in addition to causing harmful effect. Photodynamic therapy has emerged as a promising alternative treatment, which allows local administration with fewer side effects. This study investigated the photodynamic activity of curcumin on Leishmania major and Leishmania braziliensis promastigote. Both species were submitted to incubation with curcumin in serial dilutions from 500 μg/ml up to 7.8 μg/ml. Control groups were kept in the dark while PDT groups r

An update on photodynamic therapies in the treatment of onychomycosis.

Onychomycosis is a common fungal infection of the nails that is increasing in prevalence in the old, diabetics and immunocompromised. Onychomycosis presents a therapeutic challenge that can lead to significant reductions in quality of life leading to both physical and psychological consequences. Current treatment modalities are difficult to implement due to the poor penetration of topical treatments to the nail bed, the slow growing nature of nails and the need for prolonged use of topical and/or oral medications. Standard of care medications have cure rates of 63-76% that leads to a high prop
