Time's arrow flies like a bird: two paradoxes for avian circadian biology.

Biological timekeeping in birds is a fundamental feature of avian physiology, behavior and ecology. The physiological basis for avian circadian rhythmicity has pointed to a multi-oscillator system of mutually coupled pacemakers in the pineal gland, eyes and hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). In passerines, the role of the pineal gland and its hormone melatonin is particularly important. More recent molecular biological studies have pointed to a highly conserved mechanism involving rhythmic transcription and translation of "clock genes". However, studies attempting to reconcile the phys

Light exposure during night suppresses nocturnal increase in growth hormone secretion in Holstein steers.

To understand the regulatory mechanism of the secretory rhythm of GH and the involvement of melatonin (MEL) in GH regulation in cattle, daytime and nighttime profiles of GH secretion and the effect of a photic stimulation on nocturnal GH and MEL secretion were investigated in Holstein steers. Steers were kept under a constant lighting condition of 12 h of light (LIGHT; 500 lx, 0600 to 1800 h):12 h of dark (DARK; 10 lx, 1800 to 0600 h). In Exp. 1, blood was taken for 4 h at 15-min intervals during LIGHT (1100 to 1500 h) and DARK (2300 to 0300 h), respectively. The sampling was also performed fr

Lack of circadian regulation of melatonin rhythms in the sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) in vivo and in vitro.

Melatonin profiles were determined in the plasma in vivo and in the pineal organ in vitro of the sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) under various light conditions to test whether they are under circadian regulation. When serial blood samples were taken at 4-h intervals for 3 days via a cannula inserted into the dorsal aorta, plasma melatonin exhibited significant fluctuation under a light-dark cycle, with higher levels during the dark phase than during the light phase. No rhythmic fluctuations persisted under either constant dark or constant light, with constant low and high levels, respectiv

Plasticity of hamster circadian entrainment patterns depends on light intensity.

The multiple oscillatory basis of the mammalian circadian pacemaker is adduced by, among other phenomena, the occurrence of split locomotor activity rhythms in rodents after prolonged exposure to constant light. More recently, split rhythms entrained to a 24h light:dark:light:dark cycle have been documented following scheduled access of hamsters to a novel running wheel or by photoperiod manipulations alone. Because the incidence of constant light-induced splitting depends on light intensity, the role of this variable was assessed in this new splitting paradigm. Male Syrian hamsters, entrained…

Does leaf flushing in the dry season affect leaf traits and herbivory in a tropical dry forest?

In tropical dry forests (TDFs), stem-succulent deciduous species produce leaves during the dry season which coincides with the period of lower herbivore abundance. In this study, we evaluated the effects of abiotic factors (precipitation and day length) on the vegetative phenology of three stem-succulent deciduous species (Cochlospermum vitifolium, Commiphora leptophloeos, and Manihot anomala) during 2 years. In addition, we compared leaf damage by herbivores and leaf defensive traits (specific leaf area, thickness, and content of phenolic compounds) on leaf cohorts produced before and during

High temperature attenuates testicular responses in tree sparrow (Passer montanus).

The majority of birds use environmental cues to time their reproduction. Photoperiod is the most dominant cue, but other environmental factors may play a critical role in successful reproduction. Some previous studies show the effect of temperature on the timing of nest building and reproduction. Here we tested if the temperature can modulate the reproductive responses of tree sparrows. Three experiments were performed on adult male birds. In experiment 1, birds (n = 5/group) were exposed to either high (30 ± 2 °C) or low temperature (20 ± 2 °C). Change in body mass, bill color, and testes vol…

The agonistic adrenal: melatonin elicits female aggression via regulation of adrenal androgens.

Classic findings have demonstrated an important role for sex steroids as regulators of aggression, but this relationship is lacking within some environmental contexts. In mammals and birds, the adrenal androgen dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a non-gonadal precursor of biologically active steroids, has been linked to aggression. Although females, like males, use aggression when competing for limited resources, the mechanisms underlying female aggression remain understudied. Here, we propose a previously undescribed endocrine mechanism regulating female aggression via direct action of the pineal

The search for deep encephalic photoreceptors within the avian brain, using gonadal development as a primary indicator.

A review of the literature was completed on central neural structures regarded to be the site of encephalic photoreceptors in avian species. The photoreceptors are thought to function as endogenous clocks, respond to certain lengths and characteristics of the photoperiod, and serve to activate important physiological events such as gonadal function at the optimal season or time each year. Three sites have been explored: eyes, pineal gland, and deep encephalic photoreceptors within the ventral forebrain. To date the evidence supports the latter as the best candidate for housing specialized neur…

Physical mapping of porcine seasonality genes.

Seasonal infertility in sows is a problem in the pig industry characterized by delayed onset of puberty in summer and decreased farrowing rate resulting from silent oestrus and aborted pregnancy. Summer infertility is thought to be influenced by heat, sunburn and stress. However, the strongest contributory factor is photoperiod. The difference in seasonality between wild boar and commercial pig breeds suggests that there may be a genetic component to this trait. The maps and associated molecular tools emerging from the pig genome project have created opportunities to examine the genetic compon…

Prevalence of ectoparasites on goats in Dehradun (India).

The prevalence of two phthirapteran species, Bovicola caprae and Linognathus africanus, on 1048 goats from Dehradun (India) was 79.2% and 38% respectively. Prevalence of both species was higher on visibly weaker and less hairy goats. Sex related differences in prevalence were not found. The prevalence of L. africanus was slightly higher on young goats but the same was not true in case of B. caprae. The incidence of B. caprae showed moderately negative correlation with environmental temperature and photoperiod. The relative intensity of B. caprae has been found higher during winter months, foll…

Interaction of seasonal and ovarian factors in the regulation of LH and FSH secretion in the mare.

A working hypothesis for the regulation of LH secretion in the mare is postulated which involves the following two components: (1) a primary central nervous system (CNS)-pituitary component which is responsible for a basal circannual LH rhythm, entrained to an environmental 'Zeitgeber' (most probably photoperiod) and independent of ovarian influences, and (2) a secondary ovarian (steroidal) component which modifies the primary rhythm during the ovulatory season. This hypothesis does not seem to apply in its entirety to FSH secretion; the CNS-pituitary component is demonstrable within the first…

Seasonality of pineal melatonin production in the rat: possible synchronization by the geomagnetic field.

Pineal melatonin production was estimated by means of urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (aMT6s) determination in two groups of female rats for 1 year each. Seasonal changes of nocturnal aMT6s excretion were found with peak levels in summer despite constant photoperiods. We hypothesize that the horizontal component H of the geomagnetic field may act as a seasonal zeitgeber because H shows a similar seasonal rhythm, and changes in the direction and intensity of H can affect pineal activity. The observed seasonal changes of pineal melatonin production stress that despite constant environmental conditi…

Circadian rhythm disruption impairs ovarian follicular development via NAD+ metabolic reprogramming.

BACKGROUND: Circadian rhythms play a crucial role in human health, including reproductive health. Disruption of circadian rhythm is associated with female infertility. However, how circadian disruption affects ovarian function remains unclear. The main purpose of this study is to verify the impact of long-photoperiod exposure on follicular development and ovarian function. METHODS: In this study, we employed long-photoperiod (LP) conditions (18 h lightness/6 h darkness) in rats to mimic increased light exposure in human lifestyles. Hormone indicators, oestrus cycle, ovary morphology, follicul…

The role of GnRH in Tibetan male sheep and goat reproduction.

The hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis connects the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and gonads. The regulation of reproductive processes includes integrating various factors from structural functions and environmental conditions in the HPG axis, with the outcome indication of these processes being the pulsatile secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus. These factors include feed consumption and nutritional condition, sex steroids, season/photoperiod, pheromones, age, and stress. GnRH pulsatile secretion affects the pattern of gonadotropin secretion of foll…

The Complex Interactions Between Flowering Behavior and Fiber Quality in Hemp.

Hemp, Cannabis sativa L., is a sustainable multipurpose fiber crop with high nutrient and water use efficiency and with biomass of excellent quality for textile fibers and construction materials. The yield and quality of hemp biomass are largely determined by the genetic background of the hemp cultivar but are also strongly affected by environmental factors, such as temperature and photoperiod. Hemp is a facultative short-day plant, characterized by a strong adaptation to photoperiod and a great influence of environmental factors on important agronomic traits such as "flowering-time" and "sex …

An essential role for ovarian inhibin in pineal gland-mediated anestrus in Syrian hamsters.

When transferred from long photoperiod (LP) to short photoperiod (SP), female Syrian hamsters exhibit depressions of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and follicular development, cessation of ovulation, and marked ovarian interstitial tissue hyperplasia. Pinealectomy prevents these effects of SP. The object of this study was to determine the role of inhibin in the regulation of FSH during SP-induced anestrus. Adult LSH/SsLak hamsters maintained in LP (LD 14:10 hr) were transferred to SP (LD 8:16 hr) on the day of estrus, and groups of animals killed at either 16.00 hr on proestrus or 08.00 hr…

Cessation of long day melatonin rhythms time puberty in a short day breeder.

This study tested the hypothesis that in the female sheep, a short day (SD) breeder, puberty can occur normally in the absence of ambient short days. More specifically, the photoperiod cue timing the transition into adulthood is exposure to and then termination of a long day melatonin rhythm. Control lambs born in the spring were exposed to 5 weeks of long days (LD; 16 h of light, 8 h of darkness; 18-23 weeks of age) and were raised in SD (8 h of light, 16 h of darkness) at other times. As expected from previous studies, this alternating photoperiod sequence (SD-LD-SD) induced puberty at the n…
