Exploring proposed recommendations for immediate-use seizure medication: Treating both cluster and prolonged seizures with diazepam nasal spray.

The Seizure Termination Project developed expert consensus recommendations for outpatient management of seizure clusters and prolonged seizures to prevent progression to a higher-level emergency. The consensus recommendations described therapeutic scenarios for seizure clusters (acute cluster treatment [ACT]) to prevent further seizures in a cluster and treatment to stop ongoing seizures that were expected to be prolonged (rapid and early seizure termination [REST]). Here, we review ACT and REST as categories and explore their practical application by examining patient-level data for diazepam

Examining Associations Between the Timing of Maternal Depressive Symptoms, Parenting Behaviors, and Child Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: Perinatal depression is associated with poor psychosocial functioning and impaired parent-child relationship quality and confers risk for offspring psychopathology and altered brain structure. This study investigated the relative associations between the timing of perinatal depressive symptoms (prenatal, postnatal, and concurrent) and toddler psychopathology symptoms, toddler brain structure, and parenting behaviors. The study then explored whether parenting behaviors mediated relations between perinatal depressive symptoms and child psychopathology outcomes. METHOD: Using longitud

Interoceptive Exposure Impacts Food-Cue Extinction in Adolescents With Low-Weight Eating Disorders: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study.

OBJECTIVE: This randomized controlled study tested the effect of interoceptive exposure on anterior insula function and connectivity for the extinction of palatable and rotten food-cue associations in adolescent girls with low weight eating disorders (LWED). METHOD: A food-related conditioning paradigm was performed by 39 adolescent girls with LWED and 19 matched controls during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Adolescents with LWED were then randomized to 6 sessions of either interoceptive exposure (n = 18) or family-based (n = 21) treatment, followed by a second functional magn

Typologies and Phenotypes of Youth Suicide Decedents.

OBJECTIVE: Youth suicide continues to rise, yet prevention relies largely on adult-derived evidence. We aimed to identify data-driven phenotypes of youth suicide decedents to guide age-appropriate, targeted prevention and to highlight subgroups that current strategies may miss. METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional latent class analysis of 10,442 youth 10 to 17 years of age who died by suicide recorded in the US National Violent Death Reporting System (2013-2022). A total of 35 demographic, circumstantial, toxicologic, and method variables were modeled in 2- to 10-class solutions; the optima

The many roles of decision thresholds for primary research, evidence synthesis, and health decision-making.

BACKGROUND: A decision threshold (DT) reflects the point at which a decision or judgment changes, leading to the selection of an action or a commitment for one of several alternatives. Thresholds have always played a role in decision-making. Very small effects may achieve statistical significance yet remain not important to patients or the public. Judgments shift, for instance, from "no or trivial effect" to "small, moderate, and large benefit" with direct implications for decision-making. However, in guideline panels and other clinical or policy decisions, these thresholds are often applied s

Reduced prevalence of periodontitis in antidepressant users: Findings from a large-scale US sample.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis and major depression disorder have been shown to have a bidirectional association. However, the impact of antidepressants, the primary pharmacological treatment for depression, on periodontal health remains unclear. Given their anti-inflammatory properties, antidepressants may exert a protective effect against periodontitis. This study aimed to investigate the association between antidepressant use and the prevalence of periodontitis in a large, nationally representative sample of the United States (US) population. METHODS: Data from the National Health and Nutrition

Etiological diagnosis of late-onset epilepsy: A key priority for Italian epileptologists - Insights from a LICE survey.

OBJECTIVE: The incidence of epilepsy rises markedly after age 50. While late-onset epilepsy (LOE) is often linked to structural brain abnormalities, non-structural factors, such as infections, autoimmune disorders, and neurodegenerative diseases, also contribute. Approximately 20% of LOE cases remain of unknown etiology (LOEU). This study evaluated the diagnostic and therapeutic strategies employed by Italian epileptologists in managing LOE and LOEU, with the ultimate goal of proposing a standardized diagnostic algorithm. METHODS: Data were collected through a cross-sectional online survey ad

A rare mental foramen variation and the role of cone-beam computed tomography in preventing nerve injury: A case report.

BACKGROUND: The interforaminal space is frequently used for dental implant placement due to its strategic location between the bilateral mental foramina. However, neurosensory disturbances following surgical intervention near the mental foramen (MF) can occur in up to 43% of cases. Understanding anatomical variations of the MF is crucial to preventing surgical complications. Traditional two-dimensional radiographs have limitations in accurately visualizing anatomical structures, whereas cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides high-resolution three-dimensional imaging that enhances diagno
