[Space-temporal distribution of Boophilus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) ticks analyzed by geoprocessing in the municipality of Seropédica, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil].

The Geo-Environmental System of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro was used with the objective of analyzing the space-temporal distribution of Boophilus microplus ticks in the municipality of Seropédica in different types of pasture, breeding and animal density. Geo-environmental variables, climatic parameters, type of pasture, breeding and animal densities were evaluated and the results were signed. The pasture areas were categorized as very favorable, favorable, little favorable and unfavorable to the development of B. microplus. The lowest favorable rates occurred in the summer and th

A molecular survey of biomphalaria in Egypt: is B. glabrata present?

Two species of Biomphalaria are reported from Egypt, the indigenous Biomphalaria alexandrina and Biomphalaria glabrata, the latter believed to be introduced during the past few decades. Both are known to be excellent hosts of Schistosoma mansoni, the human-infecting blood fluke common in Egypt. Given the concerns regarding the spread of the exotic B. glabrata, this study was carried out to get a more current picture of the status of Biomphalaria in Egypt. Snail collections were undertaken during 2002-2003 from regions between Alexandria and Ismailia in the north of the Nile Delta, to as far so

Attraction of sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) to light traps in rural areas of Minas Gerais State, Brazil.

The objective of this study was to detect phlebotomine sand fly vector species by using light traps, and thus determine the risk of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) transmission in rural areas of the Viçosa microregion, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Sand flies were captured with Shannon-like and Falcão light traps hung between 1830 and 2230 h on 22 nights. Four sampling points where CL transmission occurs naturally were chosen. A total of 888 sand flies was collected. The most abundant species was Lutzomyia intermedia. Shannon-like traps caught significantly more L. intermedia, perhaps because of a

Reproductive changes in fluctuating house mouse populations in southeastern Australia.

House mice (Mus domesticus) in the Victorian mallee region of southeastern Australia show irregular outbreaks. Changes in reproductive output that could potentially drive changes in mouse numbers were assessed from 1982 to 2000. Litter size in females is positively correlated with body size. When standardized to an average size female, litter size changes seasonally from highest in spring to lowest in autumn and winter. Litter size is depressed throughout breeding seasons that begin when the abundance of mice is high, but is similar in breeding seasons over which the abundance of mice increase

Distribution of phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil.

Visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis are major endemic diseases in northeast Brazil. The objective of the current study was to determine the species and geographic distribution of potential sand fly vectors of Leishmania in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Sand flies were captured using CDC light traps in 30 municipalities distributed throughout the 8 geographic zones of the state. Twelve Lutzomyia species were identified. Lutzomyia longipalpis Lutz & Neiva was the most prevalent and accounted for 85.59% of the sand fly captured. The remaining species were distributed as follows: L. evandroi

Methodology for sampling questing nymphs of Ixodes ricinus (Acari: Ixodidae), the principal vector of Lyme disease in Europe.

To assess the Lyme borreliosis vector population density we set up a methodology for sampling the Ixodes ricinus L. population host questing on the vegetation. We focused on the collection of the nymphal stage, which is the principal stage of disease transmission to humans. This study was carried out in Rambouillet forest (Yvelines, France) where seven study areas were demarcated. These areas are maximally homogeneous for plant species using a finer scale than the phytosociological classification as defined by the method of landscape diagnostics. Out of 23 collections performed from March 1997…

[Age group distribution of Glossina palpalis palpalis females in plantations and shallow water of the forest region of Côte d'Ivoire. Relation to the prevalence of sleeping sickness].

In epidemiologically dangerous biotopes of foci with high prevalence of Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT), different female age groups (nulliparous, young parous, old parous) were observed in the same proportions. On the contrary, in areas without HAT or in low prevalence foci (< 0.2%), these proportions significantly differed. Female age group distribution in epidemiologically dangerous biotopes could thus be a good indication by which to guide the control of Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT).

Environmental determinants of the distribution of Phlebotomus orientalis in Sudan.

Despite its importance as a vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Sudan, the ecology of Phlebotomus orientalis is still poorly understood. The results of a ground-based survey and a geographical-information-system (GIS) study, carried out to investigate the environmental determinants of the distribution of P. orientalis in the wooded areas of the central savannah belt of Sudan, are described here. The survey, carried out in April-June 1996, consisted of a collection of sandflies over two consecutive nights at each of 44 study sites, using three CDC, miniature, light traps at each site. During th

Factors conditioning the habitat and the density of Biomphalaria tenagophila (Orbigny, 1835) in an isolated schistosomiasis focus in Rio de Janeiro city.

The present work was carried out in a watercress garden in Alto da Boa Vista, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The investigation was carried out in two phases. The first one (1985-86) involved the sampling of Biomphalaria tenegophila in two areas to determine its relative populational densities. The results showed that the populations presented similar densities and dynamics. The second phase (1988-89) involved the study of the influence of some environmental factors on the establishment of B. tenagophila in watercress garden. Two factors were identified as responsible for the establishm

Spatial and temporal variations in prevalence, intensity and aggregation of microfilaria in the human host.

The prevalence, intensity and the frequency distribution of microfilaria (mf) of Wuchereria bancrofti in the human blood and their variation in time (pre-vector control, control and post control periods) and space have been examined. The prevalence and intensity showed significant variation between time and different areas of urban Pondicherry. The significant reduction in the prevalence and intensity of microfilaremia in the areas of high endemicity indicated that the effect of vector control was well marked in these areas. The distribution of microfilaria in human population was adequately d

[Dispersion of Biomphalaria straminea in the State of Sergipe: a comparative study within an interval of 19 years].

The aim of the current paper was to study in the state of Sergipe the population distribution and interactions between two species of Biomphalaria, the snail vectors of Schistosoma mansoni in the northeastern Brazil. Data collected in 1969 showed that B. straminea, with only one exception, was limited to the semi-dry region, while B. glabrata was found to live exclusively in the forest region, both in the state of Sergipe. This spatial distribution seemed to suggest that the above Biomphalaria species used to dominate specific territories. Snail collections made in 1988 in the same 37 places s

Constructing a causal model of African human trypanosomiasis. The Antwerp Trypanosomiasis Causal Modelling Group.

Following the TDR/WHO sponsored Workshop on Modelling Sleeping Sickness Epidemiology and Control, 25-29 January 1988, Antwerp, a group of scientists at the Institute of Tropical Medicine "Prince Leopold" (ITM), Antwerp, started to develop a causal model of human african trypanosomiasis. The group hypothesised a series of relations between determinants and associated factors of the prevalence of sleeping sickness. These relations were pictured in a logically structured hierarchial representation of the causal web of sleeping sickness.

Transmission of urinary schistosomiasis in Sukumaland, Tanzania. 1. Snail infection rates and incidence of infection in school children.

Seasonal density fluctuations of Bulinus nasutus populations with accompanying Schistosoma haematobium infection rates in relation to rainfall and habitat water volumes were studied at Ukiriguru, Mwanza, Tanzania. Alongside the snail investigations, 50 school children initially negative for urinary schistosomiasis were examined regularly to determine seasonal incidence rates for the infection. Of the 17,646 B. nasutus collected in 2 years, 156 (0.88%) were found shedding cercariae. Snail populations fluctuated seasonally as influenced by rainfall through its effects on habitat water volume. Mo

The population biology of Hymenolepis tenerrima (Linstow 1882) Fuhrmann 1906 (Cestoda, Hymenolepididae) in its intermediate host Herpetocypris reptans (Ostracoda).

The occurrence of Hymenolepis tenerrima cysticercoids in a population of the intermediate host, Herpetocypris reptans is described for a one year period between October 1980 and September 1981. Parasite occurrence varied seasonally. The prevalence of infection decreased during the winter due to the death of infected hosts and low levels of transmission. Parasite transmission increased during the summer months and the maximum number of cysticercoid stages in the environment occurred in June. Juvenile ostracods were not infected and in adult ostracods a maximum of 3 cysticercoids/host was observ

Vectors of scrub typhus and their hosts on a mature oil palm estate.

L. (L.) deliense was the predominant vector of scrub typhus in a mature oil palm estate, but a small number of L. (L.) fletcheri (0.1% from rodents) and L. (L.) vivericola (0.02% from rodents and 8.0% from black plates) was also collected. Although good correlation between L. (L.) deliense collected from rodents and from black plates was not established, either method may serve as a general indicator of population fluctuations over a period of time. For the most part, the vectors of scrub typhus were limited to litter piles, and thus, the possibility of contracting scrub typhus within this typ

Chigger (Acarina:Trombiculidae) surveys of the west coast beaches of Sabah and Sarawak.

Leptotrombidium (Leptotrombidium) arenicola Traub, a vector of scrub typhus, had previously been found to occur in the coastal vegetation behind the edge of open sand along the beaches of Peninsular Malaysia. Surveys of the west coast beaches of Sabah and Sarawak were conducted to determine if this species occurs in similar habitat in East Malaysia on the island of Borneo. Leptotrombidium (L.) arenicola was not collected from the eighteen sites studied. Of the 11,982 mite larvae collected, 55 per cent were L.(L.) deliense (Walch), a well-known, widespread vector of scrub typhus.

Relation of mosquito density to bird: mammal feeding ratios of Culex tarsalis in stable traps.

Stable traps, each baited with a jackrabbit and either a chicken or a pheasant, collected more than 21,000 mosquitoes in the Sacramento Valley, California, in 1972 and 1973. The focus of interest was the feeding behavior of Culex tarsalis, a primary vector of encephalitis viruses. Generally, feeding success was less and feeding rates on the jackrabbit were greater when larger numbers of mosquitoes were collected, or when a bird was exposed that was less receptive to mosquito feeding. Greater feeding rates on the jackrabbit apparently resulted from decreased feeding on the avian host and from d
