Annual consultation incidence of osteoarthritis estimated from population-based health care data in England.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the consultation incidence of OA using population-based health care data in England and compare OA incidence figures with those derived in other countries. METHODS: A population-based health care database (Consultations in Primary Care Archive) in England was used to derive the consultation incidence of OA (overall and by joint site) using the maximum available run-in period method. These estimates, and their distribution by age and sex, were compared with those published from population-based health care databases in Canada, the Netherlands and Spain. A novel age-stra

Quality of life and health status among prostate cancer survivors and noncancer population controls.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether quality of life (QOL), health status, and the relationships between them varied by having a prostate cancer history. This study helps to inform the interface between aging-related health decline and the survival state among older men with prostate cancer, which is an important yet understudied public health issue. METHODS: Hierarchical linear models were used to analyze the cross-sectional data from the nationally representative population-based Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. Using propensity score matching, survivors (respondents with prostate cancer history)

US Hemophilia Treatment Center population trends 1990-2010: patient diagnoses, demographics, health services utilization.

For several decades, US government agencies have partially supported regional networks of Hemophilia Treatment Centers (HTC). HTC multidisciplinary teams provide comprehensive and coordinated diagnosis, treatment, prevention, education, outreach and surveillance services to improve the health of people with genetic bleeding disorders. However, national data are scarce on HTC-patient population trends and services. The aim of the study was to examine national trends over the past 20 years in patient diagnoses, demographics and health services utilization among the Health Resources and Services

Increasing childhood trauma in Canada: findings from the National Population Health Survey, 1994/95.

Age-cohort variation in childhood trauma was examined in the present study. The data were taken from the 1994/95 Canadian National Population Health Survey of household residents (n = 15,106). Childhood trauma was measured by a seven-item index (items reflected physical abuse, fearful experiences, hospitalization, being sent away from home, and parental disturbance). Reported prevalence of childhood trauma increased with each successively younger age-cohort (range = 31% to 60%). Females showed a larger change than males, and age differences grew more pronounced as trauma exposure increased. Th…

Sexual assault and physical health: findings from a population-based study of older adults.

OBJECTIVE: Prior reports have pointed to an adverse effect of sexual assault on subsequent health, particularly depression and obesity, in women. The objective of this study was to determine whether there is an association between self-reported sexual assault history and objective parameters of physical health in a sample of older men and women. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of white, middle to upper middle class, older (median age 75 years) men (N = 533) and women (N = 826) within a defined community setting. Sex-specific, age-adjusted risks were calculated for 11 common chro

Population Health Physical Therapy--Walk with a Doc in an Underserved Community with Academic, Housing Sector, and Health Department Partners: A Case Report.

Individuals living in underserved communities often have difficulty being physically active, and there is limited research on how allied health professionals can change this. This study aimed to determine if an intersectoral academic-community partnership could implement a Walk With a Doc (WWAD) program in an underserved community. A city Housing Authority, Health Department, and Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) academic program conducted a WWAD program in a housing unit in a severely disadvantaged neighborhood. In an 8-week pilot, nine participants walked 46.7 km over 50 attendances. A commit

Characteristics of a transgender and gender-diverse patient population in Utah: Use of electronic health records to advance clinical and health equity research.

Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people, individuals whose gender identity differs from their sex assigned at birth, face unique challenges in accessing gender-affirming care and often experience disparities in a variety of health outcomes. Clinical research on TGD health is limited by a lack of standardization on how to best identify these individuals. The objective of this retrospective cohort analysis was to accurately identify and describe TGD adults and their use of gender-affirming care from 2003-2023 in a healthcare system in Utah, United States. International Classification of Dise
