Influence of Anxiety on Baseline Cognitive Testing and Symptom Reporting in Adolescent Student Athletes.

Anxiety symptoms are commonly endorsed by student athletes. This study examined the possible influence of anxiety on baseline cognitive testing and symptom reporting in a large sample of adolescent student athletes. Participants were 37,945 adolescent student athletes from the state of Maine who completed baseline testing using ImPACT®. ImPACT includes an evaluation of cognitive functioning and a questionnaire assessing the presence and severity of common post-concussion symptoms. Participants were divided into high and low anxiety groups based on endorsement of anxiety-like symptoms. Student

Psychological Symptoms and Rates of Performance Validity Improve Following Trauma-Focused Treatment in Veterans with PTSD and History of Mild-to-Moderate TBI.

OBJECTIVE: Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) history have high rates of performance validity test (PVT) failure. The study aimed to determine whether those with scores in the invalid versus valid range on PVTs show similar benefit from psychotherapy and if psychotherapy improves PVT performance. METHOD: Veterans (N = 100) with PTSD, mild-to-moderate TBI history, and cognitive complaints underwent neuropsychological testing at baseline, post-treatment, and 3-month post-treatment. Veterans were randomly assigned to cognitive

Evaluating task-based brain network activity in pediatric subjects with an mTBI: mechanisms of functional compensation are symptom-level dependent.

The diagnosis of a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) places large emphasis on patient-reported symptoms which has restricted our ability to evaluate patients. Task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging has the potential to act as an objective measurement of abnormal brain activity and inform clinical decision-making; however, there is little research evaluating pediatric subjects as a function of mTBI-related symptoms. The objective of this study was to evaluate the extent to which brain activity during a spatial navigation task is different between children with mTBI and a group of hea

Effect of concussion and blast exposure on symptoms after military deployment.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether blast exposure alone and blast-associated concussion result in similar neurologic and mental health symptoms. METHODS: A 14-item questionnaire was administered to male US Marines on their return from deployment in Iraq and/or Afghanistan. RESULTS: A total of 2,612 Marines (median age 22 years) completed the survey. Of those, 2,320 (88.9%) reported exposure to ≥1 blast during their current and/or prior deployments. In addition, 1,022 (39.1%) reported ≥1 concussion during the current deployment, and 731 (28.0%) had experienced at least 1 prior lifetime concussion.

Gastrointestinal Symptoms After Sport-Related Concussion: Prevalence and Patterns in a Multi-Cohort Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Concussions occur across all sports globally; however, inconsistent symptom recognition continues to challenge diagnosis, management, and recovery. Although concussion effects extend beyond neurological dysfunction, gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms remain insufficiently captured within current assessment frameworks and may influence athletes' fuelling choices and food tolerance during recovery. This study aimed to describe the prevalence and patterns of GI symptoms reported among athletes with a history of concussion and to explore whether symptom prevalence and burden dif

Can symptom-severity phenotypes identify depression risk after mild traumatic brain injury? A cluster-based approach.

BACKGROUND: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) affects millions worldwide and frequently leads to secondary depression. Early identification of high-risk individuals is critical for targeted mental-health screening in this population. Data-driven phenotyping offers a promising avenue to unmask hidden symptom patterns, but few studies have combined unsupervised clustering of post-concussion profiles with established clinical and psychosocial metrics. We aimed to classify post-concussion symptom-severity profiles in adults with mTBI and to evaluate their association with secondary depression ris

Post-traumatic syndrome after minor head injury cannot be predicted by neurological investigations.

The aim of this study is to investigate predictive factors of post-traumatic syndrome in children with minor head injury. Prospective neurological, electroencephalographic and psychological investigations were performed in 98 children aged 3-13 years within 24 h after the trauma and 4-6 weeks later. Inclusion criteria for mild head injury were unconsciousness <10 min or none at all, lack of overt neurological symptoms and other complications requiring intensive care. Twenty-six of the children had been unconscious for a short period. Ten had suffered a skull fracture. Within the first 24 h, ne

Early cortical thickness change after mild traumatic brain injury following motor vehicle collision.

In a motor vehicle collision (MVC), survivors often receive mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI). Although there have been some reports of early white matter changes after an mTBI, much less is known about early cortical structural changes. To investigate early cortical changes within a few days after an MVC, we compared cortical thickness of mTBI survivors with non-mTBI survivors, then reexamined cortical thickness in the same survivors 3 months later. MVC survivors were categorized as mTBI or non-mTBI based on concussive symptoms documented in emergency departments (EDs). Cortical thickness

Mild traumatic brain injury (concussion), posttraumatic stress disorder, and depression in U.S. soldiers involved in combat deployments: association with postdeployment symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: Several studies have examined the relationship between concussion/mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and postdeployment symptoms. These studies indicate that the multiple factors involved in postdeployment symptoms are not accounted for in the screening processes of the Department of Defense/Veteran's Affairs months after concussion injuries. This study examined the associations of single and multiple deployment-related mTBIs on postdeployment health. METHODS: A total of 1502 U.S. Army soldiers were administered anonymous surveys

Charles Bonnet Syndrome Following a Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) describes the presence of hallucinations in patients with poor or deteriorating vision. The physician awareness of CBS is low, despite reporting of CBS hallucinations occurring in a range of ocular and central nervous system conditions. Following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), patients can experience visual or oculomotor dysfunction. As such, it is possible that CBS might present following mTBI. An adult male suffered an mTBI and whiplash injury following a motor vehicle accident. He developed persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS) including headaches and
