Pharmacy-based preventive services for opioid use disorder: a survey of U.S. pharmacists.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacists play a key role in combating the opioid-related overdose epidemic in the United States (US), but little is known about their experience and willingness to deliver preventive services for opioid use disorder (OUD). AIMS: This study seeks to identify correlates of pharmacists' concerns about drug use problems (prescription drug misuse/use disorder and illicit drug use/use disorder) as well as their practice experience delivering preventive services for OUD (e.g., asked about opioid use, provided advice, made a referral) and willingness to provide services to patients wit

Changes in provision of extended community pharmacy services in Aotearoa New Zealand, 2018 to 2022.

BACKGROUND: Recognition is growing of the contributions community pharmacists make to the primary health care team, as their role shifts from a traditional dispensing focus to greater emphasis on fully applying their clinical skills. Some extended pharmacist services (e.g., vaccinations) are becoming increasingly common in New Zealand (Aotearoa). Community pharmacies provided key services during the COVID-19 response. METHODS: An online survey was sent to community and intern pharmacists in 2022, regarding delivery of extended services and enablers and barriers to service provision, to look a

A novel dice-inspired multifunctional 3D printing guided splint for minimally invasive access cavity preparation and canal orifice identification.

BACKGROUND: The minimally invasive endodontics could retain more peri-cervical dentin (PCD) and other important dental structures, thus realizing the minimal loss of teeth structures and preserving the strength and function of the endodontically treated tooth (ETT). The search for abnormal root canals or calcified root canals could be quite time-consuming and increase the risk of perforation. OBJECTIVE: This study introduced a novel multifunctional 3D printing guided splint inspired by the dice, which can achieve the minimally invasive access cavity preparation and canal orifice identificatio

Confronting the opioid crisis with consumer health information: a look at East Tennessee.

BACKGROUND: Starting in the 1990s, health care providers began prescribing opioids to patients as pain relievers, believing they were safe. However, many patients became addicted to these pills. In 2017, the US Department of Health and Human Services declared a public health emergency to fight the opioid epidemic. This crisis was prevalent in East Tennessee, where many residents were prescribed opioids. CASE PRESENTATION: Librarians at an academic medical center library in East Tennessee analyzed the health information requests related to pain, mental health, and addiction over the last fifte

Differences in endodontic emergency management by endodontists and general dental practitioners in COVID-19 times.

The aim of this study was to assess the differences, if any, between general dental practitioners (GDPs) and endodontists, in the diagnosis and treatment of endodontic emergencies during the worldwide outbreak of COVID-19. An online questionnaire was randomly sent by social media to clinicians in different countries from 24 April, 2020 to May 4, 2020. The survey consisted of a series of questions about demographic characteristics, endodontic emergency diagnoses, approaches to prevent aerosol formation, drug prescriptions in case of symptomatic irreversible pulpitis, and the ways in which denti

Canadian neurosurgeons' views on medical assistance in dying (MAID): a cross-sectional survey of Canadian Neurosurgical Society (CNSS) members.

BACKGROUND: The Supreme Court of Canada removed the prohibition on physicians assisting in patients dying on 6 February 2015. Bill C-14, legalising medical assistance in dying (MAID) in Canada, was subsequently passed by the House of Commons and the Senate on 17 June 2016. As this remains a divisive issue for physicians, the Canadian Neurosurgical Society (CNSS) has recently published a position statement on MAID. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey to understand the views and perceptions among CNSS members regarding MAID to inform its position statement on the issue. Data was coll

The essential role of pharmacists facilitating vaccination in older adults: the case of Herpes Zoster.

Older adults share a disproportionately high burden of vaccine-preventable diseases. Despite recommendations from national and international health organizations, vaccination rates among older patients remain suboptimal, suggesting poor access and barriers to vaccination. Pharmacists are uniquely positioned to assist patients in overcoming many of these barriers. In this commentary, we describe some of the common barriers to vaccination that older adults encounter and the role pharmacists have in overcoming these barriers, in the US and abroad. We provide a case study of pharmacists' impact in

The role of clinical pharmacists in treatment adherence: fast impact in suppression of chronic myeloid leukemia development and symptoms.

PURPOSE: Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a clonal myeloproliferative disease, accounting for 15 to 20% of leukemias, with an incidence of one to two cases/100,000 inhabitants. In Brazil, the estimated incidence of leukemia is six cases/100,000 men and 4.28 cases/100,000 women. CML is characterized by the presence of the Philadelphia chromosome. At present, three types of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) are administered to treat CML patients in the Brazilian public national health system (NHS), called the Unified Health System (in Portuguese, "Sistema Único de Saúde", SUS). Such treatments a

Deep Brain Stimulation and Medication Management in Parkinson's Disease.

Current medical treatments for Parkinson's disease (PD) are symptomatic, not curative. Over time, patients need additional medications, increased doses, and increased dosing frequencies to control symptoms. Often, medications lose their effectiveness or side effects become intolerable. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a surgical option that, unlike other surgical procedures for PD, is externally adjustable and reversible. DBS is best employed in patients whose symptoms have responded to medication, but escalating doses or dosing frequencies are limiting in some way. During the perioperative per

Incident Management Systems and Building Emergency Management Capacity during the 2014-2016 Ebola Epidemic - Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea.

Establishing a functional incident management system (IMS) is important in the management of public health emergencies. In response to the 2014-2016 Ebola virus disease (Ebola) epidemic in West Africa, CDC established the Emergency Management Development Team (EMDT) to coordinate technical assistance for developing emergency management capacity in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. EMDT staff, deployed staff, and partners supported each country to develop response goals and objectives, identify gaps in response capabilities, and determine strategies for coordinating response activities. Roy Schafer: a narrative.

The author provides a brief overview of the papers given at the Schafer Symposium in October 2012 by the following six presenters: Henry Schwartz, Richard Fritsch, Rosemary Balsam, Lucy LaFarge, Michael Feldman, and Jay Greenberg. He also highlights some important ongoing themes in Schafer's writing, including theory-about which Schafer takes a unique position-history, and ideas from other disciplines. Schafer prefers continuing explorations over arriving at conclusions, the author notes, and believes that students should remain faithful to their mentors' thinking-until it is time for them to

Assessment of clinical pharmacists' interventions in French hospitals: results of a multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: The development of clinical pharmacy activities in most European countries is underway; however, data on these activities are still poorly reported. Multicenter studies are necessary to standardize and demonstrate the value of clinical pharmacy activities in these countries. OBJECTIVE: To document clinical pharmacists' daily routine interventions (PIs) to identify trends of intervention, drugs, and situations most frequently associated with drug-related problems (DRPs) and to estimate physicians' acceptance of PI. METHODS: A prospective study of PIs was conducted in 6 French hosp

Amniotic fluid embolism: an obstetric emergency.

AFE is an unpredictable, unpreventable, and, for the most part, an untreatable obstetric emergency. Management of this condition includes prompt recognition of the signs and symptoms, aggressive resuscitation efforts, and supportive therapy. Any delays in diagnosis and treatment can result in increased maternal and/or fetal impairment or death. Whereas once the invariable outcome of AFE was death of the mother, today the prognosis is somewhat brighter thanks to increased awareness of the syndrome and advances in intensive care medicine. In any case, intensive care nurses are called on to provi

Anaesthesia, surgery, and challenges in postoperative recovery.

Surgical injury can be followed by pain, nausea, vomiting and ileus, stress-induced catabolism, impaired pulmonary function, increased cardiac demands, and risk of thromboembolism. These problems can lead to complications, need for treatment in hospital, postoperative fatigue, and delayed convalescence. Development of safe and short-acting anaesthetics, improved pain relief by early intervention with multimodal analgesia, and stress reduction by regional anaesthetic techniques, beta-blockade, or glucocorticoids have provided important possibilities for enhanced recovery. When these techniques

Role expansion of radiological technologists in intraoperative fluoroscopy in Japan: A simulation-based social network analysis of interprofessional collaborative structure.

INTRODUCTION: Following the 2021 revision of the Medical Radiological Technologists Act in Japan, radiological technologists (RTs) have assumed expanded responsibilities in intraoperative fluoroscopy, including greater participation in imaging support and procedural workflows. Although role expansion has been widely implemented, quantitative evidence regarding its impact on interprofessional collaborative structure within the operating theatre remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate how expanded RT involvement influences team integration and network structure. METHODS: A simulation-base
