In order to determine the prognosis of reoperation for valvular replacement, we reviewed the results of a consecutive series of 124 patients operated in the department between 1974 and 1992 (163 multi redo operations). There were 69 women and 55 men, with a mean age 48 years; 77% of the patients were in functional class III or IV. Operations were performed as an emergency in 30% of cases. Fetal echocardiography can provide useful information for the evaluation of fetal arrhythmias. Between 1980 and 1993, 44 fetuses with arrhythmias were diagnosed in utero at 12 and 40 weeks of gestation in Kurume University Hospital. Between September 1973 and November 1993, 30 children with CMI underwent open-heart surgery. The mean age at operation was 6.63 years with a range of 8 months to 14 years. Malignant hyperthermia, a inheritant metabolic disease can be induced by some anesthetic agents. The morbid conditions and clinical manifestations in two cases of malignant hyperthermia were studied. The two basic conditions are necessary in the occurrence of malignant hyperthermia: familial inheritant defects, i.e. abnormal membranes that encase myosarkoplasm; and contact of anesthetic agents. The main clinical manifestations of malignant hyperthermia include muscular tetanic spasm and abrupt rising of body temperature. Five aspects of early prognosis and prompt treatment are given.

Severe head injuries are still associated with a high mortality (30-60%). Depth and duration of coma are poor prognostic parameters because of therapeutic concepts such as sedation and mechanical ventilation. The authors analyze the results of therapy of 1288 patients with acute submaxillary lymphadenitis, discuss the causes of the development of this condition, and draw attention to the necessity of improving dental care of the population. Comparison of various treatment modalities has demonstrated a high efficacy of radical operation combined with physio- and hydroaeroionotherapy. This article reviews the prognosis for irritant and allergic contact dermatitis and occupational and nonoccupational contact dermatitis. Factors adversely affecting prognosis are discussed. Rehabilitation of the patient with disabling contact dermatitis is considered. The importance of the various risk factors for contact dermatitis are reviewed.

We studied forty patients with CT-proven thalamic infarcts without involvement of the superficial territory of the posterior cerebral artery. The delineation into four arterial thalamic territories (inferolateral, tuberothalamic, posterior choroidal, paramedian) corresponded clinically to four different syndromes. The most common etiologies were lacunar infarction, large artery atherosclerosis with presumed artery-to-artery embolism, cardioembolism, and migrainous stroke. In a series of 171 patients suffering acute subdural haemorrhage (SDH) (111 patients) or epidural haemorrhage (EDH) (60 patients) after closed head injury accumulated during the years 1978-1985 at the University Hospital of Graz, the mortality rate and the grade of clinical recovery were evaluated.
