Four experiments examined how the visual system deals with multiple information sources for perceiving dynamic events. Two tau-type optical variables, one defined by the expanding object's image and the other defined by the expanding angular extent composed of the line of sight and the object's shadow, were manipulated in time-to-contact judgments. Bilateral congenital cholesteatoma (BCC) is rare among congenital cholesteatoma (CC) cases, and bilateral surgery poses a significant psychophysical burden on pediatric patients. Here, we present 2 pediatric cases of BCC that were successfully managed using simultaneous bilateral transcanal endoscopic ear surgery (TEES). The surgical approach provided clear visualization of the middle ear structures, enabling successful cholesteatoma removal with minimal invasiveness and a short operative time. The interaural time discrimination (ITD) is one of the azimuthal sound location cues. In multiple sclerosis subjects, deficits in binaural timing discrimination are closely related to abnormalities in brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs). To determine if psychophysical performances could be related to the BAEPs in other otoneurological deficits, thresholds of ITD were measured in 168 patients and the results correlated to the electrophysiological responses to clicks. A five generation family with an X linked ocular disorder has been investigated. The major clinical features were reduced visual acuity, nystagmus, and myopia. Although impaired night vision was not a symptom, using psychophysical and electrophysiological testing both rod and cone function were found to be abnormal in all affected males. No abnormality was detected in carrier females. Gene location studies showed X linked transmission of a gene that maps to proximal Xp11.
