The Effects of Mitral Valve Repair on Memory Performance, Executive Function, and Psychological Measures in Patients With Heart Failure.

OBJECTIVES: Heart failure (HF) is a prevalent disease that remains costly and associated with a high mortality rate. HF is also associated with poor neurocognitive functioning. For the treatment for HF patients with severe mitral regurgitation, the MitraClip device has emerged as a promising interventional tool that reduces the mitral valve leakage and thus increases cardiac output. Currently, there is only limited knowledge on changes in cognitive and psychosocial functioning before and after the MitraClip intervention. METHODS: Cognitive function (memory and executive function) and psychoso…

Psychocardiology in the elderly.

The population is rapidly aging worldwide and the burden of chronic disease follows along. Frequently, diseases go hand in hand and cardiovascular disease and mental health problems are no exception. Symptoms of depression in the elderly are often overlooked and untreated because they coincide with other problems encountered by the elderly. Older adults with depressive symptoms have poorer functioning compared to those with chronic medical conditions. The burden of cardiovascular disease also remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Bidirectional associations between depression and

Alone and content: frail seniors living in their own homes compared to those who live with others.

This study compared the psychosocial well-being and functioning of frail elderly people who live alone to those who live with others. An exploratory study was conducted with a sample of 5,265 members of a social HMO in Southern California. Those living alone were more likely to be widowed, female, and European American. Elderly people living with others reported higher levels of depression and poorer functioning. Both groups reported having a social support network, but the sources of support varied. This study contradicts older research with its finding that living alone is not synonymous wit

Cocaine dependence with and without comorbid depression: a comparison of patient characteristics.

This study compared depressed cocaine dependent patients (CD, N=50) with patients who were cocaine dependent only (CO, N=101) on pre-treatment psychiatric symptomatology, substance use, and psychosocial functioning. Results indicated that the CD group had more overall distress and poorer psychiatric functioning than the CO group. CD individuals scored higher on all subscales of the SCL-90-R, had a higher prevalence of antisocial personality disorder, reported higher craving for cocaine, lower self-efficacy to refrain from drug use, and lower perceived social support. These findings support the…

Conduct problems and callous-unemotional traits in pre-schoolers: Psychosocial profiles in a Brazilian birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Callous-unemotional (CU) traits in early childhood are risk markers for persistent antisocial behaviour, with marked adverse life outcomes. However, associations of CU traits with broader psychosocial characteristics are not well understood, particularly in early childhood. OBJECTIVE: To examine developmental and psychosocial profiles of pre-school children according to their levels of CU traits and conduct problems (CPs) in a large, population-based cohort from southern Brazil. METHODS: The 2015 Pelotas Birth Cohort includes 4,275 children followed from birth. At age 4 years, CU

Appearance-based nail stress, self-esteem, and health-related quality of life: a cross-sectional study in Korean adults.

Appearance-related stress arising from visible nail discoloration and deformation has received increasing attention as a potential psychosocial concern with implications for psychological functioning and HRQoL. Although nails are publicly exposed and play a central role in social communication and hygiene perception, limited research has examined their psychosocial impact within a behavioral medicine framework. This study examined associations among nail-related appearance stress, self-esteem, and HRQoL among adults in South Korea. A cross-sectional online survey was administered to 510 adults

Perinatal Risk Factors, Allergic Conditions and Psychosocial Problems in Children and Adolescents with Mental Health Problems.

Immune-related problems have been implicated in mental health disorders, yet their role in youth remains unclear. This study examined (a) the prevalence of perinatal risk factors and allergic conditions in youth receiving psychiatric care, (b) the association between these risks, and (c) their combined impact on psychosocial functioning. Participants included 2,193 children and adolescents (ages 6-17; M = 11.52, SD = 3.35). Parent-reported questionnaires assessed perinatal risks, allergic conditions, and psychosocial symptoms. Perinatal risks were reported in 31% and allergic conditions in 20%…

Educational, psychosocial, and protection outcomes of child- and youth-focused programming with Somali refugees in Dollo Ado, Ethiopia.

Child- and youth-friendly spaces have become a common feature of emergency humanitarian provision. This study reports on the outcomes of child and youth learning centres (CYLCs) in Ethiopia's Buramino Camp established for those fleeing conflict in Somalia. Eighty-five youths completed baseline assessments shortly after arrival and follow-up assessments three to six months later. Caregivers of 106 younger children completed similar appraisals. 693 children attending the CYLCs completed pre- and post-educational assessments, which indicated major gains-significant at p<0.0001-in both literacy (y

The Role of Subjective Well-Being in the Relationship Between Illness Invalidation, Acceptance, and Functioning in Fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic, widespread pain disorder that severely impairs daily functioning and well-being. Beyond physical symptoms, social and cognitive factors such as illness invalidation and difficulties in acceptance may further hinder adaptation. This study examined whether positive mental health and subjective well-being mediate the relationship between these factors and functioning in women with FM. A total of 148 women aged 20-65 completed self-report measures of the study variables. Preliminary correlation analyses showed that positive mental health was unrelated to invalidatio

Child-directed interaction: prediction of change in impaired mother-child functioning.

The first phase of parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT), called child-directed interaction, teaches parents to use positive and differential social attention to improve the parent-child relationship. This study examined predictors of change in mother and child functioning during the child-directed interaction for 100 mother-child dyads. The children were 3-6-years-old and diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder. After establishing that significant improvements occurred in mother report of child disruptive behavior, parenting stress, and parenting practices, these three variables were c

Parent functioning in families of preadolescents with spina bifida: longitudinal implications for child adjustment.

The purpose of this study was to test a strength-of-association model regarding possible longitudinal and bidirectional associations between parent functioning and child adjustment in families of children with spina bifida (n = 68) and families of able-bodied children (n = 68). Parent functioning was assessed across 3 domains: parenting stress, individual psychosocial adjustment, and marital satisfaction. Child adjustment was indexed by teacher-reported internalizing and externalizing symptoms, self-reported depressive symptoms, and observed adaptive behavior. Findings revealed that all 3 pare
