The importance of socio-economic determinants of health in the care of patients with peripheral artery disease: A narrative review from VAS.

Socio-economic determinants of health (SDoH) include various nonmedical factors in the socio-economic sphere with a potentially significant impact on health outcomes. Their effects manifest through several mediators/moderators (behavioral characteristics, physical environment, psychosocial circumstances, access to care, and biological factors). Various critical covariates (age, gender/sex, race/ethnicity, culture/acculturation, and disability status) also interact. Analyzing the effects of these factors is challenging due to their enormous complexity. Although the significance of SDoH for card

The sex-dependent response to psychosocial stress and ischaemic heart disease.

Stress is an important risk factor for modern chronic diseases, with distinct influences in males and females. The sex specificity of the mammalian stress response contributes to the sex-dependent development and impacts of coronary artery disease (CAD). Compared to men, women appear to have greater susceptibility to chronic forms of psychosocial stress, extending beyond an increased incidence of mood disorders to include a 2- to 4-fold higher risk of stress-dependent myocardial infarction in women, and up to 10-fold higher risk of Takotsubo syndrome-a stress-dependent coronary-myocardial diso

The Psychological Distress of Cancer Patients following the COVID-19 Pandemic First Lockdown: Results from a Large French Survey.

Cancer patients commonly experience psychological distress that may increase with the current COVID-19 pandemic. This prospective study aimed to measure post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety in cancer patients following France’s first COVID-19-related lockdown, together with associated factors. Cancer patients receiving outpatient treatment or post-treatment follow-up completed a questionnaire which measured, among other things, PTSD (IES-R), anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory), and fear of cancer recurrence (FCR). Of the 1097 patients included in the study, 14.7% and 30.5% suf

The hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis and the autonomic nervous system in burnout.

Burnout constitutes a serious health concern in the modern working environment. It is a stress-related condition that has developed as a result of a prolonged psychosocial stress exposure causing a persistent mismatch between demands and resources. The main symptom is emotional exhaustion, but physical fatigue, diminished professional efficacy, cynicism, and cognitive impairments are also associated with this condition. Burnout has been used both as a psychologic term in occupational settings and as a clinical diagnosis in patient populations, and there is currently no universally accepted def

Predicting completeness of symptom relief after major heart surgery.

The authors hypothesized that the same biopsychosocial factors that raise the risk of illness incidence would influence the speed and completeness of relief from physical symptoms during recovery following cardiac surgery. This multicenter prospective study involved 463 patients aged 35 to 69 years who underwent coronary artery bypass graft or cardiac valve surgery. Predictor data were gathered 1 to 3 days before surgery, and outcome measures were collected 6 months postoperatively. The following predictors were associated with postoperative freedom from cardiac symptoms: fewer preoperative ca

Comparative analysis of burnout levels in diverse neurological patient groups undergoing telerehabilitation.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a standardised 6-week telerehabilitation intervention (30 sessions, 60 min/day, 5 days/week) on general burnout levels (Pines and Aronson Burnout Measure) in adults with neurological conditions and to determine whether pre-post changes differed according to diagnostic group (hemiplegia/paraplegia/tetraplegia, Parkinson's disease, aphasia), sex, and age category (<65 vs ≥65 years). This study was designed as a retrospective observational study based on secondary analysis of prospectively collected data from 211 adults who completed a standardised teler

Dementia family carers' needs and wants for technological solutions to their work-care reconciliation challenges: semi-structured interviews.

Most people with dementia who live in the community are cared for by family, friends, or neighbors. Many of these unpaid dementia carers have to balance caring with paid work, which can present them with several challenges. Technology can offer potential solutions, independent of an already strained social care system. This qualitative study aimed to explore working dementia carers' needs and wants regarding technological solutions for their work-care reconciliation challenges. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 16 (10 women, 6 men) working carers of community-dwelling people with de

Psychosocial interventions for antiretroviral therapy adherence in people living with HIV in West Africa: a scoping review and bibliometric analysis.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) compromises the immune system and remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality. While antiretroviral therapy (ART) is accessible to many individuals, inadequate adherence continues to compromise viral suppression, especially in resource-limited regions. This scoping review and bibliometric analysis sought to identify psychosocial interventions targeting ART adherence among HIV patients in West Africa. The study adopted Arksey and O'Malley's scoping review framework. A systematic literature search was carried out across five databases: Scopus, PubMed, Cumu

Removable clear retainer for interim esthetic rehabilitation in a child with nonsyndromic oligodontia: a case report.

Oligodontia is an uncommon developmental anomaly characterized by the congenital absence of 6 or more permanent teeth. It can significantly affect esthetics, function, and psychosocial well-being, especially in growing children. During growth, interim prosthetic options help restore appearance and function until definitive rehabilitation is possible. A 13-year-old girl who was congenitally missing multiple permanent teeth demonstrated no associated systemic or syndromic features. Clinical and radiographic findings confirmed nonsyndromic oligodontia affecting both arches. The mandibular anterio

The Importance of Improving Promotion of Kidney Health and Access to Kidney Care: Perspectives From Leaders of Patient Organizations in Honduras.

Accessibility to kidney care is an essential component to ensure that patients with chronic kidney disease receive the necessary treatment in a timely and equitable manner. From our perspective as patients and/or leaders of patient organizations, we have observed how geographic, economic, informational, and psychosocial barriers negatively affect timely access to kidney health services, especially in Latin America. Improving access to kidney care is a complex challenge that requires a comprehensive approach, with an inclusive and equitable assertiveness. This includes not only the elimination

Preliminary Study of the Effects of a Dysphagia Support Group on Quality of Life.

PURPOSE: Dysphagia (swallowing difficulties) can greatly decrease quality of life for individuals with dysphagia and can lead to caregiver burden and third-party disability. Support groups have been shown to be effective in improving quality of life in a range of conditions, through allowing individuals to form connections with those with shared experiences and sharing and learning about relevant resources and coping skills. However, no research on the effects of dysphagia support groups on quality of life has been conducted. This preliminary study aimed to determine whether a virtual support

Highlights in clinical autonomic neuroscience: new insights into autonomic dysfunction in autism.

Investigations of autonomic nervous system biomarkers in autism have been sparse relative to its prevalence. Recent studies of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have increasingly drawn correlations between autonomic findings and psychosocial behavior. Studies of heart rate variability, pupil size, salivary alpha-amylase, and electrodermal responsiveness have shown that children with ASD differ from normally developing children in their autonomic responsiveness to visualizing human faces and other mental tasks. While some results have conflicted, much of the data appears to support
