[Comparative regions of interest study in schizophrenia, panic disorder and its comorbidity: the relationship between hippocampal volume and positive psychotic symptoms].

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia and panic disorder have been associated with limbic alterations, such as reduced volumes of the hippocampus and amygdala. However, there are conflicting results and a lack of previous neuroimaging studies assessing the implication of these structures when the two diagnosis are comorbid. AIM. To determine the type and magnitude of volumetric limbic alterations in schizophrenia, panic disorder and their comorbidity. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We measured the volume of the amygdala and hippocampus using a manual regions of interest segmentation method in schizophrenic pati

White matter alterations in the corpus callosum and visual cortical regions associated with depressive and psychotic symptoms in early-onset bipolar disorder.

AIM: White matter (WM) alterations in the corpus callosum (CC) and visual cortex have been implicated in early psychosis, with the visual regions particularly linked to psychotic symptoms. Whether similar WM patterns occur in early-onset bipolar disorder (EOBD) remains unclear. This study investigated WM alterations in EOBD and their associations with psychiatric symptoms. METHODS: Eighty-seven individuals with EOBD and 57 healthy controls (HCs) underwent diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) and psychiatric assessments. Whole-brain WM changes between groups were examined using TractSeg

Prevalence and related factors of comorbid suicide attempts and psychotic symptoms in first-episode drug-naïve patients with major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Psychotic symptoms (PS) and suicide attempts (SA) are especially prevalent in individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) and serve as key indicators of worsening condition and poor prognosis. This study examined the occurrence of comorbid suicide attempts and psychiatric symptoms (SAPS) in MDD patients, along with the factors associated with these conditions. METHODS: One thousand seven hundred eighteen first-episode drug-naïve (FEDN) MDD patients were involved in this study, and data on their sociodemographic traits, clinical symptom evaluations, and specific biochemical ma

Challenging pharmacotherapy management of a psychotic disorder due to a delicate pharmacogenetic profile and drug-drug interactions: a case report and literature review.

This report presents challenging psychopharmacotherapy management of a psychotic disorder in a patient with a delicate pharmacogenetic profile and drug-drug interactions. A 31-year old woman diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2017 was referred by her psychiatrist to a clinical pharmacologist for interpretation of a pharmacogenetic test and advice regarding optimal psychopharmacotherapy. In spite of adherence to aripiprazole, olanzapine, risperidone, and levomepromazine, and rational anxiolytic therapy, she still experienced anxiety, anhedonia, loss of appetite, sleeping problems, and auditory hal

Impact of non-medical cannabis legalization with market restrictions on health service use and incident cases of psychotic disorder in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis is a risk factor in the onset and persistence of psychotic disorders. There is concern that non-medical cannabis legalization in Canada may have population-level impacts on psychotic disorders. We sought to examine changes in health service use and incident cases of psychotic disorder following cannabis legalization, during a period of tight restrictions on retail stores and product types. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional interrupted time-series analysis using linked population-based health administrative data from Ontario (Canada) from January 2014 to March 2020. …

Long-term efficacy of risperidone long-acting injectable in bipolar disorder with psychotic features: a prospective study of 3-year outcomes.

Bipolar disorder (BD) with psychotic features is a difficult-to-treat form of the illness that is associated with a poor prognosis. We hypothesized that treatment with adjunctive risperidone long-acting injectable (RLAI) is well-tolerated and efficacious in treating patients with psychotic BD. Ten patients with BDI or BDII with psychotic features who were refractory to earlier treatments were prescribed adjunctive open-label RLAI 25-62.5 mg q twice weekly. The patients were followed prospectively for 3 years. The severity of mood and psychotic symptoms was measured using clinical rating scales
