Puberty is a critical phase of growth and development characterized by a complex process regulated by the neuroendocrine system. Precocious puberty (PP) is defined as the appearance of physical and hormonal signs of pubertal development at an earlier age than is considered normal. The timing of puberty has important public health, clinical, and social implications. In fact, it is crucial in psychological and physical development and can impact future health. Nutritional status is considered as one of the most important factors modulating pubertal development. This narrative review presents an

Aristotle was the first author who described the existence of abnormalities in the timing of human puberty. In the classic Greek-Roman period, Pliny the Elder and Phlegon of Tralles described the first individual cases of precocious puberty in children. During the Middle Ages, precocious puberty in the male (but not in the female) was ignored. We present what is, to our knowledge, the first full description in European literature of male precocious puberty and its consequences in an adult. This case is included in a book of the miscellaneous genre of Spanish Renaissance literature (Jardin de F

Idiopathic central precocious puberty (ICPP) is a relatively common condition in preadolescent girls, and its pathogenesis remains to be uncovered. A variety of studies have highlighted the association of gut microbiota (GM) with endocrine diseases, such as obesity, which is commonly associated with ICPP. However, the relationship between GM and ICPP remains unexplored. Feces samples were collected from 25 girls with ICPP (ICPP group) and 23 healthy girls (Control group). We applied 16S rDNA sequencing to compare the GM between two groups. The ICPP group had higher GM diversity and was enriche

BACKGROUND: The Mexican Society of Pediatric Endocrinology presents recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of precocious puberty (PP), a condition defined as the development of sexual characteristics due to an increase in pituitary gonadotropin secretion before 8 or 9 years of age in girls and boys, respectively.
METHODS: Three systematic reviews were conducted: controlled clinical trials on interventions for PP treatment, diagnostic tests, and observational studies on the long-term effects of PP. The quality evaluation and data extraction from the studies were conducted by two indep

BACKGROUND: Gonadotropin releasing hormone agonists (GnRHa) are well established as a standard of care for the treatment of central precocious puberty (CPP) worldwide. While numerous delivery systems and routes of administration exist, depot intramuscular injections or sustained-release preparations have been most widely used. Leuprolide acetate is well tolerated among children though some can develop some complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case report of a 6.5 year old girl with central precocious puberty who developed signs of pseudotumor cerebri after 2 doses of leuprolide acet

We present a rare occurrence of precocious puberty (PP) probably due to an autonomous ovarian cyst in a 15-month-old girl who presented to us with growth spurt, breast and pubic hair development, and vaginal bleeding over the last few months. The clinical presentation was suggestive of central precocious puberty (CPP). However, the rapid progression of pubertal changes and occurrence of menarche at breast Tanner stage 2 indicated peripheral precocious puberty (PPP). Due to uncertainty of clinical diagnosis, investigations were conducted for CPP as well as PPP. The basal and peak stimulated LH

McCune-Albright Syndrome (MAS; OMIM # 174800) is a rare, sporadic disease caused by a post-zygotic, activating mutation in the guanine-nucleotide binding protein α-subunit (GNAS1) gene. MAS is characterized by the clinical triad of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia of bone, café-au-lait skin pigmentation and peripheral precocious puberty. However, clinical presentation is highly variable depending on mosaic tissue distribution of mutant-bearing cells. Precocious puberty is the most common endocrine manifestation of MAS and is often the presenting, and sometimes the only, clinical sign of MAS. Due

OBJECTIVE: Diagnosis of central precocious puberty has always been challenging in clinical practice. As an important method in the diagnosis of central precocious puberty, luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone stimulation test is complex and time-consuming. In many cases, clinical traits are inconsistent with luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone stimulation test results, therefore not reliable for diagnosis. In this study, the authors intended to find an indicator that predicts the results of the luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone stimulation test among subjects with early pubertal signs.

UNLABELLED: Clinical precocious puberty (PP) is a disease, reputed to be on the increase and suspected to be linked to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC) exposure. Population-based epidemiological data are lacking in France and scarce elsewhere. We accessed the feasibility of monitoring PP nationwide in France in this context, using a nationwide existing database, the French National Health Insurance Information System. Here, we present the method we used with a step-by-step approach to build and select the most suitable indicator. We built three indicators reflecting the incidence of idiopa

Currently, the age of onset for pubertal changes is decreasing, especially in girls, which may have an impact on psychosocial factors such as anxiety, self-esteem and body image. The aim of the present study is to compare these variables in two groups: a group of 15 girls with precocious puberty and a group of 16 girls of the same age without precocious puberty. A non-experimental descriptive design was used and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC) and Self-Description Questionnaire (SDQ) were used to measure variables. Significant differences were found in Anxiety and Body I

BACKGROUND: Reports on the secular trend of pubertal onset indicate a recent earlier start especially in girls. Bisphenol A (BPA), which posses estrogenic activity, might be a cause of advanced puberty. The objective of the study was to determine the association between BPA and advanced puberty.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in patients with advanced puberty (n=41) compared to age-matched controls (n=47). Anthropometric measurements, estradiol, basal and gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH)-stimulated follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) levels, ut

A 6½ years Indian boy was brought by his parents, who were anxious about the excessive increase in the size of the boy's phallus, from the age of 2 years. On physical examination, the child had a penis length greater than the 97th centile for age, a sexual maturity rating of gonads at stage 2 and pubic hair at stage 3, with height in the high normal range (90-97th centile). The bone age was 12 years. Laboratory evaluation showed pubertal levels of testosterone and pubertal gonadotropin response to stimulation, confirming central precocious puberty (CPP). Incidentally, the hormonal profile also

NR0B1 is the causative gene for X-linked adrenal hypoplasia congenita, characterized by adrenal insufficiency, hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, and infertility. We identified an NR0B1 frameshift mutation in a boy with precocious puberty who had no signs of adrenal insufficiency. Blood examination revealed elevated testosterone levels and gonadotropin hyperresponses to gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) stimulation, together with normal adrenal hormone levels. GnRH analog treatment partially ameliorated his clinical features. Molecular analysis identified a p.Glu3fsAla*16 in NR0B1. These resul

PURPOSE: It is difficult to differentiate between central precocious puberty (CPP) and premature thelarche (PT) in girls. The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic usefulness of pelvic ultrasonography to distinguish between CPP and PT in girls with early breast development.
METHODS: This study included girls with early breast development who visited the clinic between January 2012 and December 2013. Clinical, laboratory, and pelvic ultrasonographic data were evaluated. CPP and PT were confirmed using the gonadotropin-releasing hormone stimulation test.
RESULTS: A total of 248 g

BACKGROUND: The genetic background of idiopathic central precocious puberty (ICPP) is not well understood, and is thought to arise from the effect of multiple genes. Familial ICPP have been reported suggesting the existence of monogenic causes of ICPP. The neurokinin B (NKB) system has recently been implicated in the regulation of the human reproductive axis. In humans, NKB and its receptor are encoded by the TAC3 and TACR3 genes, respectively. Mutations in these genes have been suggested to be causative for ICPP.
METHODS: ICPP was defined by pubertal onset before 8 yrs of age in girls, and a

As abnormal pubertal development, central precocious puberty (CPP) is manifested by the secondary sexual characteristics, skeletal maturation, and physical development in advance. It ultimately affects the adult height of children, even producing some psychological and behavioral problems such as fear and anxiety. Currently, gonadotropin releasing hormone analogue (GnRHa) is recognized as the best medicine worldwide for treating CPP in order to increase children's final adult height; however, it has some adverse effects on the growth and development of children. This paper reviews the effects

An 8-year-old girl presented with precocious menstruation and growth delay. Laboratory data revealed hypothyroidism and an X-ray of the wrist showed a delayed bone age. The Van Wyk and Grumbach syndrome (VWGS) was diagnosed and thyroid replacement was started with resolution of the symptoms. The association of precocious puberty and/or polycystic ovaries, delayed bone age and hypothyroidism is known as the Van Wyk and Grumbach syndrome. Clinically this syndrome is a diagnostic challenge because hypothyroidism usually leads to pubertal and growth delay, whereas in case of VWGS hypothyroidism it
