CSF flow dynamics in motor neuron disease.

OBJECTIVE: To assess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow dynamics involvement in the pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), we conducted CSF flow studies on 40 individuals with motor neuron diseases (MNDs) including ALS, and 28 age-matched normal and disease [cervical spondylosis (CS)] controls. METHODS: The CSF pulsatile velocity anterior to the cervical cord at level C5 during one heart beat was determined non-invasively by phase-contrast electrocardiography-triggered magnetic resonance imaging. RESULTS: In MND, caudal CSF velocity peaked at 25% of the cardiac cycle after the R wa

Pancreatic arteriovenous malformation presenting as cysts: Doppler sonographic diagnosis.

A 50-year-old man presented with multiple lesions resembling cysts throughout the pancreas on gray-scale sonography. Pulsatile blood flow detected within the lesions on color Doppler sonography led to the diagnosis of pancreatic arteriovenous malformation (PAVM). Most previously reported PAVMs have been described as having a poorly defined, reticular, or mosaic-like hypoechoic appearance on gray-scale sonography; the cystic appearance of the PAVM seen in our case is unusual.

Visual Assessment of Aqueous Humor Outflow.

In the past decade, many new pharmacological and surgical treatments have become available to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) for glaucoma. The majority of these options have targeted improving aqueous humor outflow (AHO). At the same time, in addition to new treatments, research advances in AHO assessment have led to the development of new tools to structurally assess AHO pathways and to visualize where aqueous is flowing in the eye. These new imaging modalities have uncovered novel AHO observations that challenge traditional AHO concepts. New behaviors including segmental, pulsatile, and dy

External Carotid Artery-Jugular Vein Fistula Caused by Blunt Trauma: A Case Report & Literature Review.

Acquired carotid-jugular fistula usually occurs due to neck stab wounds, gunshots, or central vein catheterization. Blunt trauma is a rare cause. These cases usually present with pulsatile swelling, tinnitus, and continued thrills in the neck. Both surgical and endovascular options have been used to manage these fistulas. Coil embolization is also applied in high-flow fistulas. We present a case of a 38-year-old woman free of any pre-existing medical conditions, presenting with a fistula between the external carotid artery and external jugular vein distally and with a high flow. She was treate

Evaluation of a transparent blood analog fluid: aqueous xanthan gum/glycerin.

Aqueous solutions of Xanthan gum and glycerin were developed that match both the viscous and elastic components of the 2 Hz complex viscosity of blood over a broad range of shear rates (1-1000 s-1) and hematocrits (20%-80%). Measurements of wall shear rate in pulsatile flow were conducted in straight and atherogenic curved artery models using both the blood analog fluid and blood to compare their flow behavior. Peak wall shear rates determined in these models under nearly identical flow conditions with the two fluids were not statistically different (p > 0.05). These results indicate that aque…

Low Heart Rate Is Associated with Cerebral Pulsatility after TIA or Minor Stroke.

OBJECTIVE: Beta-blockers are beneficial in coronary artery disease but less so in stroke prevention and dementia, potentially due to reduced heart rate (HR). Cerebral pulsatility is strongly associated with cerebral small vessel disease (SVD) and may be increased by lower diastolic pressures resulting from longer cardiac cycles. METHODS: Patients 4-6 weeks after TIA or non-disabling stroke (Oxford Vascular Study) underwent 5 minutes continuous monitoring of blood pressure (BP), electrocardiogram (ECG), and middle cerebral artery flow velocity (transcranial ultrasound). Beat-to-beat relationsh

Simultaneous and synchronous characterization of blood and CSF flow dynamics using multiple Venc PC MRI.

Neurofluid dynamics are crucial for maintaining brain homeostasis and facilitating the clearance of brain metabolites through the coupling of arterial and venous blood with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Two-dimensional phase contrast (PC) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is frequently used to study neurofluids; however, separate examinations are typically required for assessing blood and CSF flow, which can confound analyses due to asynchronous physiological measurements. To enable simultaneous assessment of neurofluid dynamics, we describe and evaluate a 2D PC MRI approach in human participant e

The pulsatile 3D-Hemodynamics in a doubly afflicted human descending abdominal artery with iliac branching.

The study of patient-specific human arterial flow dynamics is well known to face challenges like a) apt geometric modelling, b) bifurcation zone meshing, and c) capturing the hemodynamic prone to variations with multiple disease complications. Due to aneurysms and stenosis in the same arterial network, the blood flow dynamics get affected, which needs to be explored. This study develops a new protocol for accurate geometric modelling, bifurcation zone meshing and numerically investigates the arterial network with abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) and right internal iliac stenosis (RIIAS). Uterine artery blood flow remains unchanged in pregnant mares in response to short-term administration of pentoxifylline.

The objective of this study was to use Doppler ultrasound technology to determine whether pentoxifylline administration increased uterine blood flow in normal pregnant pony mares. Thirteen pregnant pony mares between 18 and 190 d of gestation (mean ± SEM, 101 ± 55) were utilized for the study during two trial periods. In each trial, pentoxifylline (17 mg/kg by mouth every 12h, diluted in syrup) was administered to half of the mares for 3 d, while the other mares were treated with syrup only. Doppler measurements were obtained from the right and left uterine arteries from each mare for 2 d prio

In vitro hemodynamic investigation of the embryonic aortic arch at late gestation.

This study focuses on the dynamic flow through the fetal aortic arch driven by the concurrent action of right and left ventricles. We created a parametric pulsatile computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the fetal aortic junction with physiologic vessel geometries. To gain a better biophysical understanding, an in vitro experimental fetal flow loop for flow visualization was constructed for identical CFD conditions. CFD and in vitro experimental results were comparable. Swirling flow during the acceleration phase of the cardiac cycle and unidirectional flow following mid-deceleration phas

Large variations in absolute wall shear stress levels within one species and between species.

Wall shear stress (WSS), the frictional force between blood and endothelium, is an important determinant of vascular function. It is generally assumed that WSS remains constant at a reference value of 15 dyn/cm(2). In a study of small rodents, we realized that this assumption could not be valid. This review presents an overview of recent studies in large and small animals where shear stress was measured, derived from velocity measurements or otherwise, in large vessels. The data show that large variations exist within a single species (human: variation of 2-16 N/m(2)). Moreover, when we compar

Physical and computer modelling of blood flow in a systemic-to-pulmonary shunt.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this work was the application of computer and physical in vitro simulation methods for estimating surgery procedure hemodynamics. The modified Blalock-Taussig (mB-T) palliative surgical procedure is performed to increase the pulmonary blood flow in children with congenital heart defects. Such a systemic-to-pulmonary shunt yields substantial modification in the blood flow within the large blood vessels. The objective of the present study was to investigate basic characteristics of the flow, flow pattern and pressure-flow efficiency, before and after opening of the mB-T gr

Different types of aortic stenosis and simulation of their morphological-hydrodynamic interdependence--in vitro study with allografts and stenotic valve models.

Biological valves display a dependence of valve resistance and valve area on flow and a phase shift between systolic flow through the valves and pressure difference across the valves. The pressure-flow relations of stenosed valves raise questions about the "best measure of stenosis". There is a need for quantitative evaluation of the hydrodynamic performance of homografts and allografts. In the present paper, we report on in vitro studies of the hydrodynamic behavior of homografts from human donors, allografts from different animal species as well as three valve models. Valve model I was desig

Transcranial Doppler findings during balloon test occlusion of the internal carotid artery.

The authors performed transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD) during internal carotid artery (ICA) balloon test occlusion (BTO) and observed changes in mean flow velocity (Vm) in the middle cerebral artery (MCA), and pulsatility index (PI) while monitoring the stump pressure (Sp) of the internal carotid artery (ICA), and neurologic findings. A group of 17 patients requiring possible temporary or permanent occlusion of the ICA in the course of planned procedures first underwent BTO. A patient who either developed neurologic changes or maintained less than 60% of preocclusion Sp or Vm in the

Total vascular resistance and blood flow frequency during left ventricular assistance using a vibrating flow pump.

A vibrating flow pump (VFP) can generate high frequency oscillated blood flow within 10-30 Hz by the oscillation of its central tube. A totally implantable artificial heart using a VFP is being developed as a unique type of blood pump. In this study, left ventricular (LV) assist circulation was performed using a VFP. The total vascular resistance and driving frequency of the VFP were estimated from their relationship. The effect of oscillation on the vascular system was studied by the frequency analysis method and vascular impedance. Adult goats were anesthetized by halothane using an inhaler
