We describe a patient with an eyelid tumor that responded well to radiation therapy. The histopathological diagnosis was poorly differentiated sebaceous carcinoma. The patient received 52 Gy electron beam irradiation in a 5-week period; thereafter, the tumor diminished. The histopathological findings after radiation showed that most tumor cells underwent massive necrosis with hyalinized obstructive vessels. The tumor was under control at the 9-month follow-up examination.

A 59-year-old man developed superior vena caval obstruction 20 years after receiving a radiation treatment for primary germinal cell tumor of the mediastinum. Venous decompression was achieved by anastomosing a 10-mm ringed polytetrafluoroethylene graft from the left internal jugular vein to the right atrium, which yielded immediate relief of symptoms. A left internal jugular venogram demonstrated graft patency 11 months post-operatively, and the patient remained free of symptoms of superior vena caval obstruction 29 months postoperatively.

The records of 23 patients with vesicovaginal fistulae (VVF) probably caused by irradiation treatment for cancer of the uterine cervix were analyzed. Eighty patients with carcinoma in the middle third of oesophagus and with acute radiation oesophagitis following external beam and intracavitary radiotherapy were managed by two different schedules. Group 1 (n = 40) received an antacid containing sodium alginate whereas Group 2 (n = 40) were given a 10% sucralfate suspension during 4 weeks. For cancer patients, fatigue is a disturbing symptom caused by many factors. Since fatigue is the most common side effect of localized radiation to the breast, this treatment provides a unique opportunity to follow patients prospectively as they develop one type of fatigue. We evaluated the effect of radiation treatment in 15 women with Stage I or II node-negative breast cancer who were otherwise healthy. Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) was used as part of the initial therapy for malignant glioma in 32 of 73 patients with histologically verified anaplastic astrocytoma (grade III astrocytoma) and glioblastoma multiforme. The initial treatment for all cases was subtotal or total tumor resection combined with external irradiation and chemotherapy. There is excellent scientific evidence to indicate that most non-melanoma human skin cancers are induced by repeated exposure to sunlight. Beagle dogs were randomized to receive a range of total dose delivered in three different protocols.
