Effects of Scout Direction, Off-Centering, and Scout Imaging Parameters on Radiation Dose Modulation in CT.

BACKGROUND: In computed tomography (CT), automatic exposure control (AEC) determines the tube current and thus the radiation dose based on scout images. We investigated CT dose modulation using two versions of CARE Dose 4D, Siemens AEC software. METHODS: A cylindrical phantom and an anthropomorphic phantom with the upper extremities raised or down were imaged. The CT tube current was determined using two versions of CARE Dose 4D and different scout directions: the posteroanterior scout image alone (PA scout), the lateral scout image alone (Lat scout), and the combination of the PA and Lat sco

Radiation-induced oral side effects in head and neck cancer: a scoping review and interdisciplinary recommendations.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Head and neck cancer remains a major global health challenge, with radiotherapy representing a central component of curative and palliative treatment. Despite advances in precision techniques, high-dose irradiation unavoidably affects adjacent oral structures, leading to a broad spectrum of side effects. These include dental caries, periodontitis, xerostomia, mucositis, candidiasis, trismus, dysphagia, and osteoradionecrosis—each with potential for chronic morbidity and diminished quality of life. This scoping review aims to summarize current evidence on oral side

The WHO-commissioned systematic reviews on health effects of radiofrequency radiation provide no assurance of safety.

The World Health Organization (WHO) commissioned 12 systematic reviews (SR) and meta-analyses (MA) on health effects of exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF). The health outcomes selected for those reviews (cancer, electromagnetic hypersensitivity, cognitive impairment, birth outcomes, male fertility, oxidative stress, and heat-related effects) were based on a WHO-conducted international survey. The SR of the studies of cancer in laboratory animal studies was the only one that did not include a MA, because those authors considered it inappropriate due to methodological dif

Genetically predicted interleukin 7 levels and neuroblastoma risk combined with analysis of radiation therapy timing effects.

BACKGROUND: The causal relationship between interleukin-7 levels and neuroblastoma risk remains unclear, and optimal radiation therapy timing lacks definitive evidence. This study investigated causal associations using Mendelian randomization while examining radiation therapy timing effects. METHODS: We conducted two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis using GWAS summary statistics for interleukin-7 levels and neuroblastoma with three SNPs as instrumental variables. Multiple MRmethods included inverse variance weighted (IVW), MR-Egger, weighted median, and mode approaches. Additionally, 1

Radiation and Chemo-Sensitizing Effects of DNA-PK Inhibitors Are Proportional in Tumors and Normal Tissues.

Inhibitors of DNA-dependent protein kinase (PRKDC; DNA-PK) sensitize cancers to radiotherapy and DNA-damaging chemotherapies, with candidates in clinical trials. However, the degree to which DNA-PK inhibitors also sensitize normal tissues remains poorly characterized. In this study, we compare tumor growth control and normal tissue sensitization following DNA-PK inhibitors in combination with radiation and etoposide. FaDu tumor xenografts implanted in mice were treated with 10 to 15 Gy irradiation ± 3 to 100 mg/kg AZD7648. A dose-dependent increase in time to tumor volume doubling following AZ

An In-depth Analysis of the Adverse Effects of Ionizing Radiation Exposure on Cardiac Catheterization Staffs.

Diagnostic and interventional angiograms are instrumental in the multidisciplinary approach to CAD management, enabling accurate diagnosis and effective targeted treatments that significantly enhance patient care and cardiovascular outcomes. However, cath lab staff, including interventional cardiologists, is consistently exposed to ionizing radiation, which poses inherent health risks. Radiation exposure in the cath lab primarily results from the use of fluoroscopy and cineangiography during diagnostic and interventional procedures. Understanding these risks and implementing effective radiatio

Cosmic-Ray Radiation Effects on Ibuprofen Tablet Formulation Inside and Outside of the International Space Station.

In extreme environments people will have different needs for medicine(s), making it crucial to understand how such environments affect drug efficacy. Ibuprofen, commonly used in tablet formulation on Earth, could fail in space despite standard pharmaceutical packaging. We introduce the concept of 'space medicines', where solid-dosage forms protect the pharmaceutical from accelerated degradation in spaceflight. We simulate dose(s) in International Space Station (ISS) through radionuclide and photon experiments, and establish the impact of alpha, beta and gamma rays. We demonstrate that tablet f

Investigating the effects of radiation, T cell depletion, and bone marrow transplantation on murine gut microbiota.

Microbiome research has gained much attention in recent years as the importance of gut microbiota in regulating host health becomes increasingly evident. However, the impact of radiation on the microbiota in the murine bone marrow transplantation model is still poorly understood. In this paper, we present key findings from our study on how radiation, followed by bone marrow transplantation with or without T cell depletion, impacts the microbiota in the ileum and caecum. Our findings show that radiation has different effects on the microbiota of the two intestinal regions, with the caecum showi

Therapeutic effects of melatonin in long-term exposure to 2100MHz radiofrequency radiation on rat sperm characteristics.

INTRODUCTION: Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs) are one of the risk factors for male reproductive health and melatonin can be an ideal candidate for therapeutic development against RF-induced male fertility problems due to its antioxidant properties. The possible therapeutic role of melatonin in the destructive effects of 2100MHz RF radiation on rat sperm characteristics is investigated in the present study. METHODS: Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups and the experiment continued for ninety consecutive days; Control, Melatonin (10mg/kg, subcutaneously), RF (2100MHz

A friend in a forest of radiation-immune interactions: BAMBI improves antitumor effects by limiting radioresistance.

Radiation therapy (RT) remains one of the most effective and utilized oncologic treatments available. While it can directly yield tumor cell death, its impact on the immune microenvironment is more complex, promoting either an antitumor response or, conversely, a tumor-promoting state. TGF-β, induced by RT, yields a more immunosuppressive environment, including potentially blunting response to immune-checkpoint blockade. In this issue of the JCI, Wang and colleagues demonstrate that RT reduced expression of bone morphogenetic protein and activin membrane-bound inhibitor (BAMBI), a TGF-β pseudo

The delayed effects of acute radiation exposure (DEARE): characteristics, mechanisms, animal models, and promising medical countermeasures.

PurposeTerrorist use of nuclear weapons and radiation accidents put the human population at risk for exposure to life-threatening levels of radiation. Victims of lethal radiation exposure face potentially lethal acute injury, while survivors of the acute phase are plagued with chronic debilitating multi-organ injuries for years after exposure. Developing effective medical countermeasures (MCM) for the treatment of radiation exposure is an urgent need that relies heavily on studies conducted in reliable and well-characterized animal models according to the FDA Animal Rule. Although relevant ani

Uncommon short- and long-term cardiological side effects of thoracic radiation: a report of two cases.

Radiotherapy is an essential treatment of more than 50% of oncohematological patients. Pericardial disorders and valvular heart disease are two common radiotherapy complications. Acute pericarditis is infrequent and usually underdiagnosed. Therefore, diagnostic suspicion and early treatment are mandatory to avoid the evolution to constrictive pericarditis. The prevalence of radiation-induced valvular heart disease is common in patients with a history of Hodgkin's lymphoma and breast cancer. It has distinctive characteristics from other etiologies and, thus, different therapeutic approaches. We

Impacts of psychological stress on high dose-rate radiation acute effects in a mouse experimental model.

Psychological stress affects health. Radiation workers in the medical field or astronauts living in space have possible risks of exposure to radiation, and psychological stress is considered to be easily induced in them due to activities performed in small areas or stress conditions. The impact of psychological stress on the effects of radiation was evaluated in senescence-accelerated mouse prone 10 (SAMP10) mice and ddY mice using a confrontational housing model, which makes dominant and subordinate mice in a cage live together without severe quarrel. Mice of ddY and SAMP10 have been previous

Targeting hippocampal neurogenesis to protect astronauts' cognition and mood from decline due to space radiation effects.

Neurogenesis is an essential, lifelong process during which neural stem cells generate new neurons within the hippocampus, a center for learning, memory, and mood control. Neural stem cells are vulnerable to environmental insults spanning from chronic stress to radiation. These insults reduce their numbers and diminish neurogenesis, leading to memory decline, anxiety, and depression. Preserving neural stem cells could thus help prevent these neurogenesis-associated pathologies, an outcome particularly important for long-term space missions where environmental exposure to radiation is significa

Comparison of the Medical Uses and Cellular Effects of High and Low Linear Energy Transfer Radiation.

Exposure to ionizing radiation can occur during medical treatments, from naturally occurring sources in the environment, or as the result of a nuclear accident or thermonuclear war. The severity of cellular damage from ionizing radiation exposure is dependent upon a number of factors including the absorbed radiation dose of the exposure (energy absorbed per unit mass of the exposure), dose rate, area and volume of tissue exposed, type of radiation (e.g., X-rays, high-energy gamma rays, protons, or neutrons) and linear energy transfer. While the dose, the dose rate, and dose distribution in tis

Flavonoid Nobiletin Exhibits Differential Effects on Cell Viability in Keratinocytes Exposed to UVA versus UVB Radiation.

The polymethoxylated flavonoid nobiletin has been shown to suppress inflammatory responses to UVB radiation and to enhance circadian rhythms. Because expression of the core nucleotide excision repair (NER) factor XPA and the rate of removal of UV photoproducts from DNA are regulated by the circadian clock, we investigated whether the beneficial effects of nobiletin in UVB-exposed cells could be due in part to enhanced NER. Although nobiletin limited UVB-irradiated human keratinocytes from undergoing cell death, we found that this enhanced survival was not associated with increased NER or XPA e
