[Effects of an exercise and relaxation aquatic program in patients with spondyloarthritis: A randomized trial].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Spondyloarthritis is a general term referring to a group of chronic rheumatic illnesses that share clinical, genetic, radiological and epidemiological features. The clinical presentation of spondyloarthritis is characterized by the compromise of both the axial and peripheral articular skeleton. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of an aquatic exercise plus relaxation program in patients with spondyloarthritis. PATIENTS AND METHOD: This was a randomized single blind study including 30 patients with spondylitis who were randomly assigned to an experimental or control gr

KCNQ (Kv7) potassium channel activators as bronchodilators: combination with a β2-adrenergic agonist enhances relaxation of rat airways.

KCNQ (Kv7 family) potassium (K(+)) channels were recently found in airway smooth muscle cells (ASMCs) from rodent and human bronchioles. In the present study, we evaluated expression of KCNQ channels and their role in constriction/relaxation of rat airways. Real-time RT-PCR analysis revealed expression of KCNQ4 > KCNQ5 > KCNQ1 > KCNQ2 > KCNQ3, and patch-clamp electrophysiology detected KCNQ currents in rat ASMCs. In precision-cut lung slices, the KCNQ channel activator retigabine induced a concentration-dependent relaxation of small bronchioles preconstricted with methacholine (MeCh; EC50 = 3.

Diastolic dysfunction in patients on thyroid-stimulating hormone suppressive therapy with levothyroxine: beneficial effect of beta-blockade.

Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) suppressive therapy with levothyroxine (L-T4) may cause adverse cardiac effects such as rhythm disturbances and ventricular hypertrophy. The latter is a predisposing condition to diastolic dysfunction. Thus, this study was designed to assess the effect of long-term TSH suppressive therapy on cardiac diastolic function. Because beta-blockade is known to reduce ventricular hypertrophy in patients on L-T4 therapy, we also tried to determine whether the addition of a beta-blocker to L-T4 improved diastolic function. Twenty-five patients (21 female and 4 male; mean

The Psychophysiological Relaxation Effects of Essential Oil Combined with Still-Life Painting Activities on Older Adults in Taiwan During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic affected all types of people, older adults were disproportionately affected. Therefore, we developed an indoor program inspired by art and natural elements (plant essential oils [EOs]) intended to have a relaxing effect akin to a forest atmosphere to enhance psychophysiological health during this period. Thirty Taiwanese older adults (range, 59-79 years) participated in the study. We combined an art activity (still-life painting of vegetables) with the inhalation of Pseudotsuga menziesii and Lavandula angustifolia EOs during a 100-minute experiment. The study sho

Management of spasticity in children with cerebral palsy.

Spasticity and other forms of muscle overactivity caused by cerebral palsy may impair function or ease of care or may cause discomfort or poor body image. The treatment program for a child with spasticity may include allied health therapy, exercise, casting, constraint-induced therapy, oral medications, chemodenervation, intrathecal baclofen, selective dorsal rhizotomy, and orthopedic surgery. Techniques may be combined for greater efficacy and better tailoring to the needs of the child. This article provides an overview of each approach, with a review of significant research findings in suppo

Mechanism of development of pre-eclampsia linking breathing disorders to endothelial dysfunction.

High blood pressure is an important component of pre-eclampsia. The underlying mechanism of development of hypertension in pre-eclampsia is complicated and still remains obscure. Several theories have been advanced including endothelial dysfunction, uteroplacental insufficiency leading to generalized vasoconstriction, increased cardiac output, and sympathetic hyperactivity. Increased blood flow and pressure are thought to lead to capillary dilatation, which damages end-organ sites, leading to hypertension, proteinuria and edema. Additional theories have been put forward based on epidemiologica

Transient pulmonary infiltrates possibly induced by quinine sulfate.

Quinine sulfate, which has been available for many years, has not been implicated definitively in the development of pulmonary toxicity. A variety of adverse effects, however, have been reported with quinine administration. A 45-year-old woman with longstanding rheumatoid arthritis experienced wheezing, severe anxiety, breathlessness, cough, orthopnea, mild fever, chills, and pleuritic chest discomfort after taking a single dose of quinine for nocturnal leg cramps. Radiographic imaging demonstrated diffuse, bilateral pulmonary infiltrates suggestive of pulmonary edema. No cause other than acut

Symptomatic mitral valve prolapse in children and adolescents: catecholamines, anxiety, and biofeedback.

It has been proposed that symptomatic mitral valve prolapse may be associated with a hyperadrenergic state and/or increased anxiety. To test this hypothesis, Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety (STAI) scores and 24-hour urinary catecholamine collections were gathered from 11 children and adolescents without mitral valve prolapse, 6 with asymptomatic mitral valve prolapse, and 14 who had chest pain (some with additional symptoms of shortness of breath, palpitations, and fatigue). STAI scores and catecholamine excretion values were not significantly different between groups. Ten symptomatic patients

[Psychotherapeutic aspects in gynecologic ambulatory care?].

The author reports on the iatrogeneous chronification of a functional disturbance in the gynaecological field caused by an approach to it that had been restricted to the somatic sector only. She aims at making the reader think about similar problems among his own patients. This, for comparison, is followed by a report on the successful treatment of a patient suffering from dyspareunia by a therapy of relaxation in connection with talks focused on the existing conflict. The latter patient was discharged from treatment after 12 hours of therapy, free from physical complaints and psychologically

Treatment of an overactive gag reflex: two cases.

Two cases are presented in which avoidance of dental work was caused by an overactive gag reflex rather than fear. Subjects were able to demonstrate increased control of gagging in the laboratory, and to complete a series of dental visits immediately after treatment and again at 6 or 12 month follow-up. Assessment and treatment strategies which were developed with these subjects are described.

Relaxation and skin conductance feedback in the control of reactions to cognitive tasks.

Peripheral physiological activity and verbal ratings of tension and nervousness were assessed during instructed relaxation, and relaxation assisted by feedback of skin conductance level (SCL). Sixteen volunteers attempted to use each strategy in turn in a cross-over design. Responses were monitored both during quiet relaxation, and throughout the performance of taxing cognitive tasks. Th electrodermal feedback made no difference to the reductions in SCL, heart rate or subjective ratings, when relaxation was carried out in undisturbed conditions. Following training, reactions to cognitive tasks

[Influence of desoxycorticosterone on the response of coronary artery segments to adrenaline in the presence of pyrogallol].

The effect of desoxycorticosterone on the adrenaline-induced relaxation of coronary arteries was studied in vitro, after a known inhibitor of COMT, pyrogallol. Relaxation induced by adrenaline was enhanced by desoxycorticosterone. Relaxation in response to adrenaline was increased by desoxycorticosterone. Pyrogallol potentiated the responses of coronary strips to adrenaline and also reduced or abolished the enhancing effects of desoxycorticosterone. It is concluded that desoxycorticosterone enhances the response of coronary smooth muscle to adrenaline by inhibiting an enzymatic pathway for the

Effect of acupressure and trigger points in treating headache: a randomized controlled trial.

The efficacy of acupressure in relieving pain has been documented; however, its effectiveness for chronic headache compared to the muscle relaxant medication has not yet been elucidated. To address this, a randomized, controlled clinical trial was conducted in a medical center in Southern Taiwan in 2003. Twenty-eight patients suffering chronic headache were randomly assigned to the acupressure group (n = 14) or the muscle relaxant medication group (n = 14). Outcome measures regarding self-appraised pain scores (measured on a visual analogue scale; VAS) and ratings of how headaches affected lif
