Filtering facepiece respirator use among farm youth in the US: A review.

The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the critical need for protective equipment, such as filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs), particularly for youth. This systematic review addresses the significant gap in evidence-based guidance for FFR use among US farm youth, a group potentially exposed to diverse respiratory hazards. Current FFR designs and protocols for FFR use are largely adult-centric. Adhering to PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a multidisciplinary panel reviewed 31 publications published between 1990 and 2023. An independent working group of agricultural safety professionals also contributed b

Impact of biochar on enzyme activity, respiration, and microbial population in irrigated farmland.

PURPOSE: This study investigated the effects of different biochar application rates on wheat yield, soil microbial activity, enzyme function, and CO2 emissions under two nitrogen fertilization levels, aiming to identify an optimal strategy for improving soil health and reducing emissions. METHODS: A randomized block design was used with eight treatments combining two nitrogen rates (conventional N1: 300 kg·ha-1, reduced N2: 255 kg·ha-1) and four biochar doses (0, 10, 20, 30 t·ha-1). Soil microbial community, respiration, enzyme activities, and CO2 emissions were analyzed. RESULTS: Biochar en…

The dynamic shape changes of the tongue base during respiration, chewing and swallowing.

This study aimed to analyze dimensional deformations of the tongue base during respiration, chewing, and swallowing. Eight 7-8-month-old Yucatan minipigs were used. Under deep sedation, eight 2mm ultrasonic piezoelectric (SONO) crystals were implanted in the tongue base forming a cubic-shaped configuration, representing right/left dorsal and ventral lengths, anterior/posterior dorsal and ventral widths, and right/left anterior and posterior thicknesses. Next, 8 pairs of electromyographic (EMG) microelectrodes were inserted into the tongue, jaw, hyoid, pharyngeal, and palatal muscles. SONO and …

Numerical simulation of voluntary respiration in a model of the whole human lower airway.

The lung model construction is limited to the local scale, and the numerical simulation of autonomous breathing is mostly computed from top to bottom in recent research. In this study, models of the entire lower airway from G0-G23 were constructed, and computational simulations were performed for the alveolar model using coupled fluid-solid analysis with pressure changes on the wall and for the rigid bronchial model using computational fluid dynamics by transmitting the boundary conditions step from bottom to top. This paper provides the results under spontaneous respiration, including the ven…

Critical Assessment of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Respirator Questionnaire.

OBJECTIVE: Medical assessment of workers using respirators is recommended widely and generally required by the OSHA. The OSHA Respirator Standard includes a mandatory respirator questionnaire (ORQ) as an appendix. The ORQ was added over 25 years ago and has not been reassessed or updated. METHODS: A team of experienced occupational medicine professionals reviewed the questionnaire in a standardized manner. RESULTS: Many questions warrant modification to improve clarity, specificity, and relevance to current respirator types and uses. Several currently important topics are underemphasized or

MftG is crucial for ethanol metabolism of mycobacteria by linking mycofactocin oxidation to respiration.

Mycofactocin is a redox cofactor essential for the alcohol metabolism of mycobacteria. While the biosynthesis of mycofactocin is well established, the gene mftG, which encodes an oxidoreductase of the glucose-methanol-choline superfamily, remained functionally uncharacterized. Here, we show that MftG enzymes are almost exclusively found in genomes containing mycofactocin biosynthetic genes and are present in 75% of organisms harboring these genes. Gene deletion experiments in Mycolicibacterium smegmatis demonstrated a growth defect of the ∆mftG mutant on ethanol as a carbon source, accompanied

A general framework for nitrogen deposition effects on soil respiration in global forests.

Since the Industrial Revolution, human activities have altered atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition to global forests, affecting carbon dioxide emissions from soils (soil respiration or SR) - one of the largest land-atmosphere carbon fluxes. However, experimental studies have demonstrated both positive and negative effects of N deposition on SR in global forests, leading to debates on how N deposition increases or decreases SR. We developed a framework for generalizing SR responses to N deposition using synthesized data from 168 N addition experiments worldwide and observed SR across the global…

Physiological effects of filtering facepiece respirators based on age and exercise intensity.

During the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, Filtering Facepiece Respirators (FFRs) were highly effective, but concerns arose regarding their physiological effects across different age groups. This study evaluated these effects based on age and exercise intensity in 28 participants (children, young adults, and older individuals). Physiological parameters such as respiratory frequency (Rf), minute ventilation (VE), carbon dioxide production (VCO2), oxygen consumption (VO2), heart rate (HR), metabolic equivalents (METs), percutaneous oxygen saturation (SpO2) and the concentration of O2 and CO2

The Cellular Respiration of Endometrial Biopsies from Patients with Various Forms of Endometriosis.

Endometriosis is one of the leading pathologies of the reproductive system of women of fertile age, which shows changes in cell metabolism in the lesions. We conducted a study of the cellular respiration according to the polarography and the mRNA content of the main metabolic proteins using qRT-PCR of intraoperative endometrial biopsies from patients in the control group and with different localizations of endometriosis (adenomyosis, endometrioma, pelvic peritoneum). In biopsy samples of patients with endometriomas and pelvic peritoneum endometriotic lesions, the rate of oxygen absorption was …

Impact of Functional Conservation Surgery on Sleep Respiration of Patients with Glottic Cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Laryngeal cancer is a common tumor in the head and neck, and surgery is one of the main treatment methods for laryngeal cancer. Laryngeal cancer surgery destroys the laryngeal cartilage scaffold, leading to structural changes in the laryngeal cavity and affecting respiratory compliance during sleep. However, less attention has been paid to the impact of changes in laryngeal structure on sleep breathing conditions. This article conducts a prospective study on the effects of preserving laryngeal function in cancer glottic surgery on sleep and respiratory status in patients, in order t

Quantification of Respirable Aerosol Particles from Speech and Language Therapy Exercises.

INTRODUCTION: Voice assessment and treatment involve the manipulation of all the subsystems of voice production, and may lead to production of respirable aerosol particles that pose a greater risk of potential viral transmission via inhalation of respirable pathogens (eg, SARS-CoV-2) than quiet breathing or conversational speech. OBJECTIVE: To characterise the production of respirable aerosol particles during a selection of voice assessment therapy tasks. METHODS: We recruited 23 healthy adult participants (12 males, 11 females), 11 of whom were speech-language pathologists specialising in v

Impairment of mitochondrial respiration in platelets and placentas: a pilot study in preeclamptic pregnancies.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a major complication of pregnancy with partially elucidated pathophysiology. Placental mitochondrial dysfunction has been increasingly studied as major pathomechanism in both early- and late-onset PE. Impairment of mitochondrial respiration in platelets has recently emerged as a peripheral biomarker that may mirror organ mitochondrial dysfunction in several acute and chronic pathologies. The present study was purported to assess mitochondrial respiratory dys/function in both platelets and placental mitochondria in PE pregnancies. To this aim, a high-resolution respirometry…

A review of respirable fine particulate matter (PM2.5)-induced brain damage.

Respirable fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been one of the most widely publicized indicators of pollution in recent years. Epidemiological studies have established a strong association between PM2.5, lung disease, and cardiovascular disease. Recent studies have shown that PM2.5 is also strongly associated with brain damage, mainly cerebrovascular damage (stroke) and neurological damage to the brain (changes in cognitive function, dementia, psychiatric disorders, etc.). PM2.5 can pass through the lung-gas-blood barrier and the "gut-microbial-brain" axis to cause systemic oxidative stress an

New method to measure interbreath intervals in infants for the assessment of apnoea and respiration.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory disorders, including apnoea, are common in preterm infants due to their immature respiratory control compared with term-born infants. However, our inability to accurately measure respiratory rate in hospitalised infants results in unreported episodes of apnoea and an incomplete picture of respiratory activity. METHODS: We develop, validate and use a novel algorithm to identify interbreath intervals (IBIs) and apnoeas in preterm infants. In 42 preterm infants (1600 hours of recordings), we assess IBIs from the chest electrical impedance pneumograph using an adaptive amp

Particulate respirator use and blood pressure: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

People use a particulate respirator in order to reduce exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Acute exposure to PM2.5 is known to increase blood pressure. However, systematic reviews or meta-analyses on blood pressure-related benefits of using a particulate respirator is lacking. Therefore, we reviewed randomized crossover intervention studies on blood pressure-related effects of particulate matter respirator use. We conducted a literature review of articles found on Embase, Medline, and Cochrane library on August 31, 2020. The study outcomes were systolic and diastolic blood pre
