Morphological study of tooth development in podoplanin-deficient mice.

Podoplanin is a mucin-type highly O-glycosylated glycoprotein identified in several somatyic cells: podocytes, alveolar epithelial cells, lymphatic endothelial cells, lymph node stromal fibroblastic reticular cells, osteocytes, odontoblasts, mesothelial cells, glia cells, and others. It has been reported that podoplanin-RhoA interaction induces cytoskeleton relaxation and cell process stretching in fibroblastic cells and osteocytes, and that podoplanin plays a critical role in type I alveolar cell differentiation. It appears that podoplanin plays a number of different roles in contributing to

[MORPHO-FUNCTIONAL CHANGES OF THYMUS TISSUES IN CHILDREN WITH CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE].

Biopsy specimens of the thymus were studied in children aged under 11 months (n = 77) with congenital heart defects and circulatory hypoxia of varying severity. Histological sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Shubich's method (to demonstrate mast cells). The expression of Ki-67, CD3 and CD34 was assessed by immunohistochemistry. The ultrastructure of thymic tissues was also examined. It was found that the severity of hypoxia determined the morphological changes in the organ associated with a development of large complex of tissue reactions. A disruption of internal structure and

Sinonasal hemangiopericytoma.

UNLABELLED: Hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is a rare entity that is found in only 1% of vascular tumours. Only 5% of HPC are localized in the nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses. The exact incidence is not stated in the literature. CASE REPORT: A case of a 76-year-old female patient is presented. As she suffered from stroke a cranial CT was performed and the tumour of the paranasal sinuses was diagnosed incidentally. The patient had a history of paranasal sinus surgery under local anaesthesia twenty years ago. The former histological diagnosis was stated as "angiofibroma with signs of proliferation "

Evoking communication in Rett syndrome: comparisons with conversations and games in mother-infant interaction.

Girls with Rett syndrome retain a responsiveness with care-givers that corresponds in many respects with the preverbal communication observed with normal infants. This has characteristic rhythmic patterns and phrases, mutual imitation, reciprocal emotional phases and rudimentary oral, vocal and gestural expressions. After individuals with Rett syndrome have passed the critical stage in dissolution of their attention, co-ordination and voluntary control, they retain positive orientation to human faces and eyes with smiling. Video analyses show that they can engage with rhythms and phrases of co

Brainstem serotonergic neurons in chronic alcoholics with and without the memory impairment of Korsakoff's psychosis.

There are several lines of evidence to suggest that serotonergic neurons in the brain are detrimentally affected by chronic alcohol consumpt … were affected, but the largest neuronal loss was found in areas of the medullary and caudal pontine reticular formation (reduced by 80-90%). Alcoholics with Korsakoff's psychosis did not differ in the amount or extent of pathology from the other alcoholic cases analyzed. [Functional morphology of the lymphatic system of the rat uterus during pregnancy].

In the regional lymph nodes of the uterus the comparative volume of the paracortical zone significantly increases, especially within the period of the 13th-17th days of pregnancy. In the popliteal lymph node similar effect is not discovered. From the 7th up to the 11th day edema, vasodilatation, infiltration with special leucocytes are revealed. Endothelium of the postcapillary venules is hypertrophied, contains many migrating lymphocytes, which accumulate around the vessels mentioned. The volume of the microcirculatory bed is moderately increased. By the 17th day plasmoblasts, plasmocytes, Mo

Combined effects of noise, vibration and visual field stimulation on electrical brain activity and optomotor responses.

Eye movements and electroencephalographs (EEG) were recorded in intact rabbits during an optokinetic test. The animals were exposed to pure … tion at 40 Hz and strongest at 120 Hz. EEGs of the dorsal hippocampus, amygdaloid complex, midbrain reticular formation, and frontal motor cortex were all activated during noise and vibration exposure, but activation of the hippocampal EEG was the most closely related to the increase in OKN. Combination of the different stimuli indicated that their interaction could …

The regulation of cardiovascular functions by monoamine neurotransmitters in the brain.

The complexity of the central nervous system's influence on cardiovascular integration is underscored by the extensive neural interconnections between the various higher and lower brain structures shown by electrophysiological studies to have an influence on cardiovascular function. Furthermore, complex neural connections exist within each level of cardiovascular integration (for instance, the medullary reticular formation, or the limbic system). The electrophysiological analysis of the integrative aspects of central cardiovascular regulation has been the subject of several reviews (Reis, 1972…

Recent advances in the understanding of acupuncture.

The controversy about acupuncture is familiar to us since its recent reintroduction into this country. Much of its philosophical concepts we … egmentally located acupuncture points exert their influences through the integrative efforts of the reticular formation and the thalamus. The demonstration of transmissibility of acupuncture analgesia through blood and cerebrospinal fluid in animals implicates the involvement of humoral factors. Parotid hypersalivation after inferior salivatory nucleus glutamate/NMDA receptor excitation in the rat.

Although salivation is essential during eating behavior, little is known about the brainstem centers that directly control the salivary glands. With regard to the inferior salivatory nucleus (ISN), the site of origin of the parasympathetic preganglionic cell bodies that innervate the parotid glands, previous anatomical studies have located it within the rostrodorsal medullary reticular formation. However, to date there is no functional data that shows the secretory nature of the somas grouped in this region. To activate only the somas and rule out the activation of the efferent fibers from and…

Historical awareness of the brainstem: From a subsidiary structure to a vital center.

The historical trajectory of the discovery of the brainstem as a vital center has been rarely explored. Focusing on its tracts and neurons f … vital functions performed by the brainstem. The anatomists of the 20th century found the ascending reticular formation, the respiratory center, and pressor centers-all automatic and vital functions. It took centuries for this realization to open the way to use the testable brainstem centers to establish the criteria for a neurologic determination of death. The ontog …

Obtaining the palygorskite:chitosan composite for modified release of 5-aminosalicylic acid.

This study's aim was to obtain composites from palygorskite (PLG) and chitosan (CS) in order to modify 5-aminosalicylic (5-ASA) release. Initially, the PLG:CS composite was obtained using glutaraldehyde (GLA) as a reticular agent. Then, PLG, CS and PLG:CS were characterized by means of analytical techniques such as CHN elemental analysis, surface area analysis, XRD, FTIR, DSC and TG, SEM, adsorption tests and release profiles. Based on analytical data, the formation of the PLG:CS composite which showed the presence about 19% of CS, decrease in specific surface area, morphological analysis modi

Identification of neural cells activated by mating stimulus in the periaqueductal gray in female rats.

Induction of lordosis as typical female sexual behavior in rodents is dependent on a mount stimulus from males and blood levels of estrogen. Periaqueductal gray (PAG) efferent neurons have been suggested to be important for lordosis behavior; however, the neurochemical basis remains to be understood. In this study, we neuroanatomically examined (1) whether PAG neurons activated by mating stimulus project to the medullary reticular formation (MRF), which is also a required area for lordosis; and (2) whether these neurons are glutamatergic. Mating stimulus significantly increased the number of c…
