Intake, digestibility, ingestive behavior, production, and composition of goat milk supplemented with detoxified castor bean meal added urea as a replacement of soybean meal.

This study evaluated the castor bean meal detoxified with calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2] added urea replacing soybean meal in the diet of lactating goats from milk production and composition, intake, digestibility, and ingestive behavior. Eight Alpine multiparous goats weighting 44.3 ± 5.3 kg and at approximately 60 days of lactation were confined and randomly distributed in 4 × 4 double Latin squares, with four inclusion levels of detoxified castor meal: control (0), 25, 50, and 75 g/kg dry matter (DM) total. Detoxified castor bean meal replacing soybean meal (P > 0.05) in goats diet did not aff

Lipase production by Aspergillus niger under various growth conditions using solid state fermentation.

Ricinus seed litters were chosen as a cheap carbon source for lipase production by A. niger under solid state fermentation (SSF). Maximum lipase production was achieved upon using an enriched (potassium citrate and casein) waste at pH 7.8 and 30 degrees C for 8 days incubation. Nitrogen sources as NH4Cl, NH4NO3, (NH4)2SO4, urea and amino acids repressed the lipolytic activity. The chloride salts of Ba2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Hg2+, K+, Mg2+, Mn2+, Na+ and Sn2+ inhibited, while Zn+2 did not affect lipase production. Compounds containing hydrolyzable ester group, such as Tween(s), were found to inhi…

Ticks and the city - are there any differences between city parks and natural forests in terms of tick abundance and prevalence of spirochaetes?

BACKGROUND: Ixodes ricinus ticks are commonly encountered in either natural or urban areas, contributing to Lyme disease agents Borreliella [(Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu lato)] spp. and Borrelia miyamotoi enzootic cycles in cities. It is an actual problem whether urbanization affects pathogen circulation and therefore risk of infection. The aim of the study was to evaluate main tick-borne disease risk factors in natural, endemic areas of north-east (NE) Poland (Białowieża) and urban areas of central Poland (Warsaw), measuring tick abundance/density, prevalence of infection with spirochaetes an…

The Roles of Contrasting Host Types on the Environmental Abundance of Anaplasma phagocytophilum, an Emerging Zoonotic Pathogen.

Fundamental knowledge of the role of hosts in shaping vector-borne pathogen abundance is critical to understanding the ecology of these disease systems; yet the roles can be challenging to tease apart, especially for pathogens vectored by generalist feeders with multiple hosts. In this study, we aimed to quantify the relative contributions of hypothesised pathogen transmission hosts (deer and sheep) and non-transmission hosts (birds and rodents) to the environmental abundance of Anaplasma phagocytophilum (ecotypes I and II) in Ixodes ricinus ticks. Anaplasma phagocytophilum is a zoonotic patho…

Occurrence of tick-borne pathogens in questing ticks, ticks from riding horses, and red deer blood in Western Pomerania, Poland.

Ixodes ricinus is a widespread vector of numerous microorganisms pathogenic to humans and animals in Europe. The risk of exposure to tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) has increased in recent years due to climate change, the conversion of natural green areas to recreational areas, and growing human and animal populations, including pets. Using molecular methods, the prevalence, diversity, and co-occurrence of selected tick-borne microorganisms were assessed in questing I. ricinus collected from recreational areas (n = 409), in ticks feeding on horses (n = 135), and in blood samples from red deer (n =…

Fipronil prevents transmission of Lyme disease spirochetes.

Lyme disease, a tick-borne illness caused by Borrelia spirochetes, poses a significant threat to public health. While acaricides effectively control ticks on pets and livestock, their impact on pathogen transmission is often unclear. This study investigated the acaricidal efficacy of fipronil against Ixodes ricinus ticks and its potential to block Borrelia afzelii transmission. Initially, we employed the ex vivo membrane blood-feeding system to assess the dose–response acaricidal activity of ivermectin, fipronil and its metabolite fipronil sulfone, when supplemented in the blood meal throughou…

Cross-Immunity and Community Structure of a Multiple-Strain Pathogen in the Tick Vector.

Many vector-borne pathogens consist of multiple strains that circulate in both the vertebrate host and the arthropod vector. Characterization of the community of pathogen strains in the arthropod vector is therefore important for understanding the epidemiology of mixed vector-borne infections. Borrelia afzelii and B. garinii are two species of tick-borne bacteria that cause Lyme disease in humans. These two sympatric pathogens use the same tick, Ixodes ricinus, but are adapted to different classes of vertebrate hosts. Both Borrelia species consist of multiple strains that are classified using …

High seroprevalence of Borrelia miyamotoi antibodies in forestry workers and individuals suspected of human granulocytic anaplasmosis in the Netherlands.

Substantial exposure to Borrelia miyamotoi occurs through bites from Ixodes ricinus ticks in the Netherlands, which also transmit Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Direct evidence for B. miyamotoi infection in European populations is scarce. A flu-like illness with high fever, resembling human granulocytic anaplasmosis, has been attributed to B. miyamotoi infections in relatively small groups. Borrelia miyamotoi infections associated with chronic meningoencephalitis have also been described in case reports. Assuming that an IgG antibody response against B. miyamoto…

Small risk of developing symptomatic tick-borne diseases following a tick bite in The Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: In The Netherlands, the incidence of Lyme borreliosis is on the rise. Besides its causative agent, Borrelia burgdorferi s.l., other potential pathogens like Rickettsia, Babesia and Ehrlichia species are present in Ixodes ricinus ticks. The risk of disease associated with these microorganisms after tick-bites remains, however, largely unclear. A prospective study was performed to investigate how many persons with tick-bites develop localized or systemic symptoms and whether these are associated with tick-borne microorganisms. RESULTS: In total, 297 Ixodes ricinus ticks were collect…

Physiologic and Genetic Factors Influencing the Zoonotic Cycle of Borrelia burgdorferi.

Borrelia burgdorferi is a symbiont of ticks of the Ixodes ricinus complex. These ticks serve as vectors to disseminate the spirochete to a variety of susceptible vertebrate hosts, which, in turn, act as reservoirs for naïve ticks to become infected, perpetuating the infectious life cycle of B. burgdorferi. The pivotal role of ticks in this life cycle and tick-spirochete interactions are the focus of this chapter. Here, we describe the challenging physiological environment that spirochetes encounter within Ixodes ticks, and the genetic factors that B. burgdorferi uses to successfully infect, pe…

[Studies on the importance of tick-borne encephalitis in Rhineland-Pfalz].

Within the scope of a prospective clinical study during 2001 in Rhineland-Palatinate specimen from sera and cerebrospinal fluids of 163 patients with suspected meningitis were controlled in an enzyme immunoassay concerning a TBE infection. Questionable results were checked via a neutralisation test. In no case such an infection was confirmed. No virus specific nucleic acids could be detected in 998 nymphs and adults of Ixodes ricinus in an additional investigation in 2000. Therefore Rhineland-Palatinate has to be considered as a region with low virus prevalence. A general recommendation for va…

Preliminary studies on virus and spirochete accumulation in the cement plug of ixodid ticks.

We provide evidence that tick-borne encephalitis virus and Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. are accumulated in the cement plug in the host skin within the first few hours after tick attachment. Extirpation of the tick without the cement plug, even very soon after the attachment, did not prevent the transmission by Ixodes ricinus, Ixodes persulcatus or Dermacentor reticulatus to mice. This was within 1 hour in the case of the TBE virus and after 20-22 h of attachment, in the case of Borrelia and I. persulcatus. The epidemiological significance of these findings is discussed.

Nucleotide sequence of the protein E gene of the tick-borne encephalitis virus strain 595 isolated in Slovakia.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus, strain 595 was isolated from Ixodes ricinus ticks in southern Slovakia. A part of the protein E gene was sequenced and compared with the prototype strain Neudorfl. Seventeen silent mutations and two amino acid changes (Ile-->Val, residue 167; Asn-->Thr, residue 366) were found. The nucleotide homology in the sequenced part of protein E gene of the strain 595 and the prototype strain Neudorfl is 98.6%. These findings indicate that the strain 595 is closely related to the strain Neudorfl.

[Lyme disease: clinical and sero-epidemiological study of Borrelia burgdorferi infections in Belgium].

Lyme disease is a multi-systemic infection caused by the spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi: this bacterium, discovered in 1982 in the United States, is mainly transmitted by a tick bite, Ixodes ricinus in Europe. In Belgium, a first seroepidemiological study of 3 years has revealed 190 patients and the whole spectrum of clinical pictures was observed, including the early stage of this infection in the skin (erythema chronicum migrans), neurological involvement and arthritis. The Lyme borreliosis is endemic in our country: the incidence ranges from low near the coast to high in the south-eastern…
