Role of Sex and Age in Fatal Outcomes of COVID-19: Women and Older Centenarians Are More Resilient.

In the present paper, we have analysed the role of age and sex in the fatal outcome of COVID-19, as there are conflicting results in the literature. As such, we have answered three controversial questions regarding this aspect of the COVID-19 pandemic: (1) Have women been more resilient than men? (2) Did centenarians die less than the remaining older people? (3) Were older centenarians more resistant to SARS-CoV-2 than younger centenarians? The literature review demonstrated that: (1) it is women who are more resilient, in agreement with data showing that women live longer than men even during

Life on the battlefield: Valproic acid for combat applications.

The leading causes of death in military conflicts continue to be hemorrhagic shock (HS) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Most of the mortality is a result of patients not surviving long enough to obtain surgical care. As a result, there is a significant unmet need for a therapy that stimulates a "prosurvival phenotype" that counteracts the cellular pathophysiology of HS and TBI to prolong survival. Valproic acid (VPA), a well-established antiepileptic therapy for more than 50 years, has shown potential as one such prosurvival therapy. This review details how VPA's role as a nonselective histo

Cardiac vagal control as a marker of emotion regulation in healthy adults: A review.

In the last two decades, a growing body of theory and research has targeted the role of cardiac vagal control (CVC) in emotional responding. This research has either focused on resting CVC (also denoted as cardiac vagal tone) or phasic changes in CVC (also denoted as vagal reactivity) in response to affective stimuli. The present paper is aimed at reporting a review of the papers published between 1996 and 2016, and focused on the results of 135 papers examining cardiac vagal control as a physiological marker of emotion regulation in healthy adults. The review shows that studies have employed

Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Diabetes: A State of the Art Review.

OSA is a chronic treatable sleep disorder and a frequent comorbidity in patients with type 2 diabetes. Cardinal features of OSA, including intermittent hypoxemia and sleep fragmentation, have been linked to abnormal glucose metabolism in laboratory-based experiments. OSA has also been linked to the development of incident type 2 diabetes. The relationship between OSA and type 2 diabetes may be bidirectional in nature given that diabetic neuropathy can affect central control of respiration and upper airway neural reflexes, promoting sleep-disordered breathing. Despite the strong association bet

Combined effect of EPO and radiotherapy on the expression of endogenous molecular markers of tumor metabolism and metastasis.

Erythropoietin (EPO) has been used to correct cancer-related anemia and to improve tumor hypoxia, which both adversely affect the clinical condition of cancer patients and response to radiotherapy. Data available on the effects of EPO treatment in cancer are, however, conflicting. Several clinical studies investigating the influence of EPO treatment have given contradictory results as to whether or not this treatment positively influences survival. In light of these conflicting results, we studied the effects of EPO treatment either alone or in combination with radiotherapy on tumor oxygenatio

Socially shared emotions shape the activity of the medial prefrontal cortex during inference of others' emotional states.

The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) weighs options during decision-making, but its role in inferring competing emotional states and how this process changes with age, remain unclear. We recorded brain activity with functional MRI while 20 young and 40 older adults inferred the emotions of actors shown in ecological yet controlled social interactions. Socially shared representations about the timing, accuracy, and uncertainty of emotional inferences were defined using response distributions from an independent sample viewing the same scenes. mPFC activity is sensitive to emotional inference and

Intergenerational trauma: A silent contributor to mental health deterioration in Afghanistan.

Multiple theories, including family systems, epigenetics, attachments, and many others, have proposed mechanisms for trauma transmission from generation to generation. Intergenerational trauma is today one of the most important psychosocial issues affecting Afghans' mental health and psychology, with the potential to affect subsequent generations. A variety of factors have impacted the mental health of the Afghan population over the years, including years of conflict, socioeconomic instability, natural disasters, chronic drought conditions, economic turmoil, and food insecurity, all of which h

Does the media (also) keep the score? Media-based exposure to the Russian-Ukrainian war and mental health in Portugal.

The Russian-Ukrainian war (RUW) is responsible for extensive individual suffering and a socio-economic impact on the world and is reshaping global affairs. Many studies have focused on direct exposure to conflict and several public health policies have been devised. Nonetheless, indirect exposure through media has received minimal attention and there is limited evidence that mental health symptoms and disorders may arise as a result. We explored the role of voluntary or involuntary media-based exposure to the RUW on individuals' mental health including stress symptoms, coping strategies, daily

Supported Home Ownership and Adult Independence in Milan: The Gilded Cage of Family Housing Gifts and Transfers.

This article analyses practices of intergenerational support for homeownership among different generations of families in Milan, Italy, highlighting the role of housing in family welfare relations and life-course transitions. It makes use of an original dataset of qualitative interviews investigating homeownership pathways and the negotiations of support that they pre-suppose. The article explores the meanings and moral reasoning behind the decision to accept (or not) support in context of contemporary discourses surrounding the liquidity and availability of housing and finance. It highlights

Medullary infarction causing coexistent SUNCT and trigeminal neuralgia.

Background Short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache attacks with conjunctival injection and tearing (SUNCT) or with autonomic symptoms (SUNA) are grouped together within the trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias (TACs). However, the SUNCT and SUNA phenotype and management overlap with those of trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Additionally, a broad variety of cerebral pathologies are reportedly able to trigger either TN- or SUNCT-like pain, and emerging structural neuroimaging findings suggest the possible role of neurovascular conflict with the trigeminal nerve in SUNCT, further supporting aetiolo

Motion Sickness: Current Knowledge and Recent Advance.

Motion sickness (MS) is a common physiological response to real or virtual motion. Numerous studies have investigated the neurobiological mechanism and the control measures of MS. This review summarizes the current knowledge about pathogenesis and pathophysiology, prediction, evaluation, and countermeasures of MS. The sensory conflict hypothesis is the most widely accepted theory for MS. Both the hippocampus and vestibular cortex might play a role in forming internal model. The pathophysiology focuses on the visceral afference, thermoregulation and MS-related neuroendocrine. Single-nucleotide

[How stress gets under the skin].

How psychological stress gets under the skin and contributes to increase the odds for the onset and progression of chronic diseases has been object of abundant research. In this literature review, evidence about the role that both acute (natural phenomenon, marital conflict, a social evaluative task) and chronic stress (stress at work, and the perception of being discriminated) as well as interpersonal stress have on physical health, is examined. Behavioral (lack of physical activity, smoking, lack of adherence) and physiological (dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, sympa

The gambler's fallacy is associated with weak affective decision making but strong cognitive ability.

Humans demonstrate an inherent bias towards making maladaptive decisions, as shown by a phenomenon known as the gambler's fallacy (GF). The GF has been traditionally considered as a heuristic bias supported by the fast and automatic intuition system, which can be overcome by the reasoning system. The present study examined an intriguing hypothesis, based on emerging evidence from neuroscience research, that the GF might be attributed to a weak affective but strong cognitive decision making mechanism. With data from a large sample of college students, we found that individuals' use of the GF st

Mismatches between 'scientific' and 'non-scientific' ways of knowing and their contributions to public understanding of science.

As differentiation within scientific disciplines increases, so does differentiation between the sciences and other ways of knowing. This distancing between 'scientific' and 'non-scientific' cultures reflects differences in what are considered valid and reliable approaches to acquiring knowledge and has played a major role in recent science-oriented controversies. Scientists' reluctance to actively engage in science communication, coupled with journalists' reliance on the norms of balance, conflict, and human interest in covering scientific issues, have combined to exacerbate public mistrust of

[The role of muscarinic receptor antagonists in the treatment of men with lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to BPH].

Use of antimuscarinic agents in male patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and with symptoms of overactive bladder (OAB) has become increasingly relevant over the last few years. Prescription of these drugs is in conflict with a long-established concept learnt in Medical School: antimuscarinics are contraindicated in patients with BPH. Several factors, however, have placed this issue under constant review. The description of OAB syndrome and the scientific research carried out over recent years have provided epidemiological and pathop

Obsessive compulsive disorder--a neuropsychiatric illness.

Until recently, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) was thought to be a rare condition. Once viewed predominantly as a manifestation of psychodynamic conflict, OCD is now considered a model neuropsychiatric disorder. While clear differences exist between OCD patients and normal controls, there are more similarities between OCD and Tourette's Syndrome than most other neurotic disorders in neurological signs, electrophysiology and neuropsychology. These include a lack of laterality, bilateral or dominant (left) frontal lobe dysfunction, shortened REM latency in sleep electroencephalogram, shorte

Construction and constriction in agoraphobia.

A formulation of agoraphobia is presented in personal construct theory terms. It is hypothesized that the construing of agoraphobics and their spouses is characterized by low cognitive awareness of constructs concerning interpersonal conflict and lack of tenderness; by dilemmas in which the ability to go out implies possible infidelity; and by low self-esteem in the agoraphobic and high self-esteem in their spouse. Evidence in support of these hypotheses is provided by a repertory grid study comparing agoraphobics, non-agoraphobic neurotics, spouses of both client groups, and normal subjects.

Naloxone attenuates the anxiolytic action of diazepam in man.

The present study addresses the possible role of endorphins in mediating the anxiolytic properties of diazepam (DZM) in man. The ability of a low dose (0.4 mg. i.v.) of the specific opiate antagonist, Naloxone (NLX) to modify the anxiolytic action of DZM (0.07 mg/kg i.v.) in 22 patients anticipating minor orthopaedic surgery was evaluated. The study was performed in a double-blind placebo (saline)-controlled, randomized design. DZM administered 3 hours pre operation, reduced the anxiety experienced by subjects as estimated on a formal rating scale completed by the patients. NLX, as compared to

Effects of a web-based decision aid on breast cancer patients considering a breast reconstruction: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Due to the variety of surgical methods, breast cancer patients may face dilemmas regarding decision-making. Web-based decision aids (WDAs) are interactive tools that help patients make informed decisions by meeting their needs both inside and outside the hospital, providing real-time decision assistance, and being more practical and convenient. Although the incidence of breast cancer ranks first among female cancers in China, studies focusing specifically on the use of WDAs in breast cancer patients have not been conducted in the country. The objective of this study was to determine t
