Antimicrobial efficacy of chitosan nanoparticles as intracanal medicament against Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus: An in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: Persistence of microbes is the main cause for root canal failure. Nanoparticles such as chitosan can prevent reinfection as chemo-mechanical preparation cannot abolish all the microbes. AIM: To investigate the antimicrobial efficacy of chitosan nanoparticles when they were combined with calcium hydroxide (Ca[OH]2) and 2% chlorhexidine digluconate against Enterococcus faecalis and Staphylococcus aureus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and forty single-rooted teeth were collected and root canal treatment was done. E. faecalis and S. aureus (n = 70 each) were inoculated and incub

Comparative evaluation of antimicrobial efficacy of mushroom, Aloe vera, and Curcuma longa with calcium hydroxide as an intracanal medicament against Enterococcus faecalis: An in vitro study.

BACKGROUND: The success of endodontic treatment mainly depends on the eradication of microorganisms from the root canal system. The use of intracanal medicaments plays a crucial role in eliminating resistant bacteria such as Enterococcus faecalis. Intracanal medicaments similar to herbal compounds can be used as a substitute for conventional calcium hydroxide (CaOH2) to prevent toxicity. The existing study aimed to compare and evaluate the antimicrobial activity of four different intracanal medicaments against E. faecalis. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to compare and evaluate the

A randomized controlled trial to evaluate the incidence of postoperative pain and flare-ups in single and multiple visits root canal treatment.

BACKGROUND: Irreversible pulpitis is a painful and debilitating condition. Root canal treatment (RCT) provides prompt relief and salvages the affected tooth/teeth. It has classically been performed as a multivisit procedure. A relatively newer approach constitutes performing all the steps in one single visit. This study was designed to explore if single-visit RCT could be confidently used as an effective and preferred treatment modality for irreversible pulpitis in the Indian Armed forces. METHODS: The study compared the incidence of postoperative pain, tenderness on percussion (TOP), flare-u

Pulp and Periodontal Regeneration of an Avulsed Permanent Mature Incisor Using Platelet-rich Plasma after Delayed Replantation: A 12-month Clinical Case Study.

Numerous publications have reported revascularization of necrotic immature permanent teeth, but the regenerative potential of pulp in mature teeth has rarely been considered. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) meets many requirements of a scaffold for regenerative endodontics. To the best of our knowledge, no clinical study has evaluated PRP for endodontic regeneration in a mature avulsed tooth. The present case evaluated PRP for pulpal regeneration in an avulsed mature incisor (>8 hours extraoral dry time) of an 11-year-old boy after delayed replantation. The canal was disinfected after extraoral acc

Accessory foramina in the furcation area of primary molars. A SEM investigation.

AIM: The accessory canals in the furcation of primary molars can explain the frequent presence of radiolucency in the furcation area in case of pulpitis and necrosis of teeth. In fact these canals can represent a communication between periodontium and pulp tissue allowing bacteria to enter. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of foramina in the furcation area of primary molars. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The presence of foramina was assessed using extracted deciduous molars examined with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) evaluation. Thirty extracted human primary molars (15 upp

Antimicrobial Efficacy of Contemporary Obturating Materials used in Primary Teeth- An In-vitro Study.

INTRODUCTION: Preservation of primary tooth with non-vital pulp has been a major problem for pediatric dentist. In such cases, the preferred treatment modality is pulpectomy. The objective of pulpectomy is complete removal of necrotic and irreversibly infected pulp of an affected tooth but, in spite of chemomechanical preparation and copious irrigation of canal, there are chances of failure of pulp therapy due to the entrapped micro organisms in the canal space owing to the tortuous and complex nature of the root canal system and change in their morphology with root resorption. Thus, for optim

Composite resin rehabilitation of eroded dentition in a bulimic patient: a case report.

Eating disorders such as bulimia nervosa can have a significant impact on the structure of the teeth. Gastric acid not only causes enamel and dentin to dissolve but also causes a progressive deterioration of dental health, which leads to functional esthetic and biological consequences. According to the classic concepts of restorative dentistry, the rehabilitation of such clinical cases will involve numerous full crowns and root canal treatments, a process which is expensive financially, biologically, and in terms of time. However, the development of resin composite and adhesive systems has mad

Calcium enriched mixture cement for primary molars exhibiting root perforations and extensive root resorption: report of three cases.

In primary molars with root perforations of endodontic origin, tooth extraction and space maintainer are recommended. Calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) cement is a new biomaterial demonstrating favorable sealability/biocompatibility. This report presents a novel treatment modality for cases of primary molar teeth with root perforations associated with a periodontal lesion due to extensive inflammatory root resorption, whereby CEM was used as a perforation repair/pulpotomy biomaterial. Three cases of primary molar root perforations due to inflammatory resorption were selected; all cases were assoc

Short-term tissue response to potential root-end filling materials in infected root canals.

The short-term tissue responses to two potential root-end filling materials, a light-cured glass ionomer cement (Vitrebond) and a reinforced zinc oxide-eugenol cement (Kalzinol), were compared with that to amalgam using a previously devised experimental model. In 24 premolar teeth of beagle dogs (47 roots), a collection of endodontic pathogenic bacteria was first inoculated into the root canals to induce periradicular lesions. On each root, an apicoectomy was performed and root-end cavities prepared to receive fillings of each material. The teeth and surrounding jaw were removed after 2 weeks
