Rejection sensitivity prospectively predicts increased rumination.

Converging research findings indicate that rumination is correlated with a specific maladaptive interpersonal style encapsulating submissive (overly-accommodating, non-assertive and self-sacrificing) behaviours, and an attachment orientation characterised by rejection sensitivity. This study examined the prospective longitudinal relationship between rumination, the submissive interpersonal style, and rejection sensitivity by comparing two alternative hypotheses: (a) the submissive interpersonal style and rejection sensitivity prospectively predict increased rumination; (b) rumination prospecti

Ruminant brucellosis in Upper Egypt (2005-2008).

Brucellosis is endemic among humans and ruminant in Egypt and recent reports suggest that its incidence may be increasing. In this study we describe the frequency of brucellosis among different ruminant species in Upper Egypt and its spatial distribution using the data generated by a large-scale control campaign undertaken between 2005 and 2008. A total of 120,090 individual animals of different ruminant species were tested during the campaign. The true proportions of brucellosis were estimated as 0.79% (CI: 0.71%-0.87%), 0.13% (CI: 0.08%-0.18%), 1.16% (1.05%-1.27%) and 0.44% (0.34%-0.54%) amo

Distinguishing rumination from worry in clinical insomnia.

Research has found that repetitive thought processes, such as worry and rumination, play an important role in several disorders; however, these cognitive processes have not yet been examined in insomnia. This study explores rumination and worry in insomnia by examining: 1) whether those high and low on rumination and worry differ on subjective sleep measures, and 2) whether rumination and worry are distinct processes in insomnia. Participants (N=242) were diagnosed with an insomnia disorder by sleep experts. Participants completed measures of worry and rumination and maintained a 2-week daily

What predicts the trajectory of rumination?: A prospective evaluation.

The current report aimed to document individual differences that predict the trajectory of post-event rumination following an evaluative event. In this study, 127 undergraduate students were assessed over a 5-day period preceding and following a mid-term exam. Participants completed measures of anticipatory processing, trait test anxiety, trait tendency to ruminate, negative affect, and post-event rumination. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to examine predictors of post-evaluative rumination. Results suggested that individuals who reported high levels of anticipatory processing and trait

Ruminations of a geriatric Emeritus Regius Professor of Medicine.

The potential for the holder of a senior academic post to influence the medical world is usually enshrined in their job description. Even though Oxford University failed to provide one, this account of 25 years of undirected activity suggests that such posts can influence events, albeit to a limited extent and not always in the expected direction.

Chewing gum as a treatment for rumination in a child with autism.

Rumination involves regurgitation of previously ingested food, rechewing the food, and reswallowing it. In the current study, a child with autism displayed chronic rumination, resulting in the decay and subsequent removal of several teeth. After several treatments failed, including thickened liquids and starch satiation, the participant was taught to chew gum. His rumination decreased significantly when gum was made available. Results suggest that access to chewing gum may be an effective treatment for rumination in some individuals.

A systematic review of the relationship between rumination and suicidality.

Rumination has been persistently implicated in the etiology of hopelessness and depression, which are proximal predictors of suicidality. As a result, researchers have started to examine the role of rumination in suicidality. This systematic review provides a concise synopsis of the current progress in examining the relationship between rumination and suicidality, and highlights areas for future research. A search of the international literature was conducted using the three main psychological and medical databases. Eleven studies were identified providing evidence, with one exception, of a re

Rumination, emotion, and forgiveness: three longitudinal studies.

In 3 studies, the authors investigated whether within-persons increases in rumination about an interpersonal transgression were associated with within-persons reductions in forgiveness. Results supported this hypothesis. The association of transient increases in rumination with transient reductions in forgiveness appeared to be mediated by anger, but not fear, toward the transgressor. The association of rumination and forgiveness was not confounded by daily fluctuations in positive affect and negative affect, and it was not moderated by trait levels of positive affectivity, negative affectivit

Reduced Concreteness of Rumination in Depression: A Pilot Study.

We hypothesized that the reduced concreteness theory of worry (Stöber & Borkovec, 2002) would be applicable to negative recurrent thinking in general, including depressive rumination. To test this prediction, the current study compared the concreteness of problem descriptions of currently depressed (n = 30), recovered depressed (n = 29) and never depressed (n = 30) individuals. Participants provided open-ended descriptions of two current major problems about which they repeatedly dwell. Blind ratings demonstrated reduced concreteness of the problem descriptions and associated perceived consequ

The impact of rumination on memory for self-referent material.

Previous findings have linked rumination to the enhanced retrieval of negative memories (Lyubormirsky, Caldwell, & Nolen-Hoeksema, 1998) and overgeneral autobiographical memories (Watkins & Teasdale, 2004) in depression. However, little is known of the impact of rumination on the encoding of information, and in particular, self-referent information. This study examined the impact of rumination on self-referent encoding in high (BDI-II>or=13) and low (BDI-II<or=5) dysphoric participants. Participants were randomly allocated to a rumination or distraction condition, and then completed the experi

Pain perception as a function of self-focused rumination.

Pain sensitivity and tolerance were studied using the cold-pressor technique. A 3 independent groups design was employed using rumination as the independent variable. Group 1 was given a situation in which anger-related self-rumination was introduced. Group 2 was given a self-related rumination task in which anger was not induced. Group 3 received a rumination task not related to the self. In addition, the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory was given prior to the experiment to test the hypothesis that ratings on the Anger-In subtest would correlate with pain sensitivity. In each group were

Successful multidisciplinary treatment in an adolescent case of rumination.

Rumination is a rare and complex disorder to treat. It involves repeated regurgitation, rechewing and reswallowing of food and occurs mainly among infants and mentally retarded children. Among adolescents and adults it is rather rare, but still might cause significant sequelae (depression, other eating disorders and social problems). We provide a detailed psychodynamic formulation in a non-retarded adolescent with rumination (over a four year period). A multidisciplinary approach involving individual insight-oriented psychotherapy, group therapy, pharmacological therapy and a nutritional inter

Rumination and executive function in depression: an experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Major depression is associated with cognitive deficits, particularly those requiring central executive functioning. Depressed patients also tend to focus on and think about their symptoms and problems ("ruminate") more than non-depressed controls. Although an association has been found between rumination and impaired performance on a central executive processing task, the causal relation between impaired executive functioning and rumination has not been determined. This study sought to directly manipulate rumination and assess the impact on executive functioning in depression as me

In vitro metabolism of fumonisin B1 by ruminal microflora.

Fumonisin B1 (FB1) is a mycotoxin produced by Fusarium moniliforme and F. proliferatum. Little is known of its metabolic fate after oral ingestion in ruminants, but these animals are reported to be tolerant towards FB1. The metabolism of this mycotoxin was evaluated following incubation (1 microg/ml) in ruminal fluid for up to 72 h, in the presence or absence of alfalfa as a substrate for microbial growth, using a model rumen (sealed flask, anaerobic conditions, exclusion of light, gentle agitation, 39 degrees C). The decrease in FB1 concentration and the production of short-chain fatty acids …

"Thanks for sharing that": ruminators and their social support networks.

Receiving positive social support after a trauma generally is related to better adjustment to the trauma. The personality of trauma survivors may affect the extent to which they seek social support, their perceived receipt of social support, and the extent to which they benefit from social support. The authors hypothesized that people with a ruminative coping style, who tended to focus excessively on their own emotional reactions to a trauma, compared to those without a ruminative coping style, would seek more social support, and would benefit more from social support, but would report receivi

[Lipids and their antioxidant activity in tissues of ruminant animals].

The work deals with the estimation of lipids in the bovine tissues (liver, intestine, skin) of the animals bred for the industrial purposes. The tests displayed, that depending on ration, breeding conditions and providing the animals organism with vitamins, the lipids levels in the liver, intestine and skin changes. As a result of the experiments the conclusion was made that deficiency of fatty-soluble vitamins A, D, E in the animals fodder provided for the disturbance of lipid metabolism in their organism and for the development of a pathologic process: a light form of alimentary parathyroid-

Ruminative thinking in older inpatients with major depression.

Ruminative thinking, the tendency to dwell on particular ideas or themes, can be a prominent part of the phenomenology of major depression, but it rarely has been the focus of empirical research. We attempted to replicate (in adult psychiatric inpatients age > or = 50 years with DSM-III-R major depression) the previously published finding that ruminative thinking was associated with melancholia and with psychosis. In our sample, these associations were not present. In addition, we explored the relationships of ruminative thinking to specific areas of thought content (e.g., suicidal ideation, s
