SARS-CoV-2 is a major global public health burden associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and complications, including respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, and digestive disorders. COVID-19 may induce venous and arterial thromboembolic complications, including deep vein thrombosis, myocardial infarction and cerebral infarction. Simultaneous myocardial and cerebral infarction, termed cardio-cerebral infarction, is exceedingly rare. There is only limited case of concurrent cardio-cerebral infarction in patients with COVID-19. Although there is no standard treatment for the condit…

The World Health Organization reports that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has impacted a staggering 770 million individuals to date. Despite the widespread nature of this viral infection, its precise effects remain largely elusive. This scientific inquiry aims to shed light on the intricate interplay between SARS-CoV-2 infection and the development of neurodegenerative disorders-an affliction that weighs heavily on millions worldwide and stands as the fourth most prevalent cause of mortality. By comprehensively understanding the repercussions of SARS-CoV-2 on neur…

The efficacy of face masking for the public is not convincing to prevent the transmission of respiratory tract viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 when the criteria of evidence-based medicine are applied. This finding is mainly explained by the results from randomized-controlled trials (RCTs) when a high prevalence of the infection and a high compliance in mask wearing was assured. Throughout these studies no significant protective effect was observed. Observational studies with surgical masks describe a significant protective effect, but are prone to confounders such as physical distance. Respirators …

When infected with SARS-CoV-2, Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) develop moderate disease severity presenting key features of human COVID-19. We here develop a biomathematical model of the disease course by translating known biological mechanisms of virus-host interactions and immune responses into ordinary differential equations. We explicitly describe the dynamics of virus population, affected alveolar epithelial cells, and involved relevant immune cells comprising for example CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, macrophages, natural killer cells and B cells. We also describe the humoral respons…

Despite that the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has been controlled, it has affected a large proportion of the population, raising some concerns about potential sequelae in men at reproductive age. To contribute to the clarification of this issue, we performed a retrospective study comparing semen parameters values before and after confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in a large cohort of infertile men, compared to a control group that did not undergo SARS-CoV-2 infection. Wilcoxon test on paired samples and general linear regression model showed that SARS-CoV-2 infection has a detrimental effect on semen volu…

INTRODUCTION: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is present in a latent state in 70-90% of the immunocompetent population, and its reactivation might be triggered by inflammatory conditions such as post-COVID multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) or by immunosuppression induced by steroids. The aim of this paper was to highlight the unexpected complications associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection that require a complex clinical approach for accurate diagnosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present the case of a 4-year-old male patient who, during an initially favorable course of PIMS, experienced s…

BACKGROUND: Studies exploring predictors of arrhythmias in the population primarily hospitalized for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) are scarce. Understanding this is crucial for risk stratification and appropriate management.
METHODS: Using the 2020 National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database, we identified primary admissions for COVID-19. A 'greedy neighbor' 1:1 propensity-score matching (PSM) accounted for baseline differences. Then, multivariable logistic regression models were employed to account for confounders and estimate the probability of arrhythmia.
RESULTS: There were a total of 1,058,815 adm…

COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, can have neurological effects, including cognitive symptoms like brain fog and memory problems. Research on the neurological effects of COVID-19 is ongoing, and factors such as inflammation, disrupted blood flow, and damage to blood vessels may contribute to cognitive symptoms. Notably, some authors and existing evidence suggest that the SARS-CoV-2 virus can enter the central nervous system through different routes, including the olfactory nerve and the bloodstream. COVID-19 infection has been associated with neurological symptoms such as altered consc…

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has evolved significantly during the pandemic and resulted in daunting numbers of genomic sequences. Tracking SARS-CoV-2 evolution during persistent cases could provide insight into the origins and dynamics of new variants. We report here a case of B-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia on chemotherapy with infection of SARS-CoV-2 for more than two months. Genomic surveillance of his serial SARS-CoV-2-positive specimens revealed two unprecedented large deletions, Δ15-26 and Δ138-145, in the viral spike protein N-terminal domain (NTD) and …

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory infection caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The virus binds to angiotensinogen converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), which mediates viral entry into mammalian cells. COVID-19 is notably severe in the elderly and in those with underlying chronic conditions. The cause of selective severity is not well understood. Here we show cholesterol and the signaling lipid phosphatidyl-inositol 4,5 bisphosphate (PIP2) regulate viral infectivity through the localization of ACE2's into nanoscopic (<200 nm) lipid clusters. Uptake of cholestero

Following the emergence of SARS-CoV-2, various reports suggest that there has been a significant increase in substance abuse due to social distancing and related issues. Several reports have suggested the impact of chronic substance use on individuals' physiological and psychological health. Therefore, there is a need to know the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on persons with substance use disorders. Individuals with substance use disorders are the most vulnerable groups and are at a high risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection due to their already existing health issues associated with substance use. In order to address the world-wide health challenge caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 3CL protease/SARS-CoV-2 main protease (SARS-CoV-2-Mpro) coded by its nsp5 gene became one of the biochemical targets for the design of antiviral drugs. In less than 3 years of research, 4 inhibitors of SARS-CoV-2-Mpro have actually been authorized for COVID-19 treatment (nirmatrelvir, ensitrelvir, leritrelvir and simnotrelvir) and more such as EDP-235, FB-2001 and STI-1558/Olgotrelvir or five undisclosed compounds (CDI-988, ASC11, ALG-097558, QLS1128 and H-10517) are undergoing clinical trials. Although COVID-19 is mostly a pulmonary disease, it is now well accepted that it can cause a much broader spectrum of signs and symptoms and affect many other organs and tissue. From mild anosmia to severe ischemic stroke, the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on the central nervous system is still a great challenge to scientists and health care practitioners. Besides the acute and severe neurological problems described, as encephalopathies, leptomeningitis, and stroke, after 2 years of pandemic, the chronic impact observed during long-COVID or the post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) greatly intrigues s…

Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a global concern and has changed the way we practice medicine in acute hospital settings. This is particularly true with regard to patient triage, patient risk assessment, use of personal protective equipment, and environmental disinfection. Transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is primarily through inhalation of respiratory droplets generated through talking, coughing, or sneezing. There is, however, a potential risk that respiratory droplets settling on inanimate surfaces and objects in the …

Idiopathic achalasia is a chronic oesophageal motility disorder caused by loss of inhibitory neurons at the esophageal myenteric plexus resulting in incomplete relaxation of the lower oesophageal sphincter and abnormal peristaltism. Among the possible causes of this, an immune response secondary to infection by some viruses has been implicated. SARS-CoV-2 could be considered among them. The therapy option should be aimed at achieving the greatest clinical effectiveness according to each patient's health status.

It is important to acknowledge the impact that COVID-19 has on the thyroid gland and how the thyroid gland status before and during infection affects SARS-CoV-2 severity. To this day those dependencies are not fully understood. It is known that the virus uses angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 as the receptor for cellular entry and it can lead to multiple organ failures due to a cytokine storm. Levels of proinflammatory molecules (such as cytokines and chemokines) which are commonly elevated during infection were significantly higher in observed SARS-CoV-2-positive patients. In terms of hypothyro…
